Episode 9: As a follow up to the previous video where I shared my method of making groundbait for free, today we are back in my kitchen and I’m going to show you a method of making boilies for free; both free offerings and hookbaits.
This is a recipe I have created, and is essentially a normal boilie base mix that has been adapted to use ingredients that most people already have in their kitchen cupboards. It’s a fairly standard maize, rice flour and semolina blend, just done a bit differently.
Ingredients list:
Dried white rice
Dried pasta
Cornflakes
Plain white flour
Vegetable oil
Medium eggs
Salt
Flavourings

I have had really good results with Anise oil although strawberry jello works well for both carp and catfish here in the US.

Hi, great video! I followed your instructions with a few variations and the boilies still managed to turn out great! I already had corn flour and semolina in the cupboard so I used those instead of the corn flakes and pasta. Due to the semolina already being dry, I didn't make a paste with it and the rice as the consistency wouldn't have been right. Instead I just threw the cooked rice in a Ziplock bag with the corner open and used a rolling pin to squish it up. I then turned the bag inside out and scraped the rice into a bowl with all the dry ingredients. Next I added 3 eggs, some minced garlic, a packet of jelly and some fish sauce then mixed it all together. The mix was still sticking to my hands so I added approximately 100 grams of ground up dog biscuits instead of adding more flour. When I rolled the mix into balls I made holes in them using a wooden skewer then boiled them up. After the boilies had finished cooking and had cooled for a few minutes, I ran the skewer through them again to make sure the hole went all the way through. I found it more efficient to fill the whole skewer up then pull them off one at a time. I made a quarter of the boilies half the size and without holes to use as berley. I'm really looking forward to trying them out and hopefully hooking some monster carp.

Jeez it works. I think because of the pasta you get the gooey texture when you boil them. Which is great . Thanks man

Oh my word mate, you've made this far more hard work than it needs to be. Mix ALL of you DRY and ALL of your WET then mix to the desired consistency. Please for the love of a bend in your rod, no need for all that flour, It becomes harder and harder to work with.

Great video, I will be giving this ago for sure. If you put a damp cloth/ tea towel under your chopping board, it will stop it sliding around on you.

You can also use a blender to grind the pasta and rice into powder rather than cooking it and add them to your dry mix but it has to be able to turn it into powder and not just smaller chunks of itself. Your flavors would be better mixed into your eggs, as would liquid colorings, so it spreads across the entire paste. 4 eggs, 2 for teriberry, 2 for raspberry lemon and weigh and split your base mix into 2 parts then add teriberry eggs to one mix and raspberry lemon to the other. I do this and create 3 boilie flavors, the 2 separate ones then a combination of the 2 pastes side by side in a gun gets you a two toned flavor boilie, a teriberry lemon flavour.

Well, my first attempt at these resulted in a good fishing session yesterday. Made one batch, split into two colours/flavours. For some reason one of the colours is floating! They do sink once waterlogged but was a bit annoying! The other colour sinks as it should LOL Same mix, different colour, different flavour.

I made some yellow and red with the same flavours but the red did not get a sniff at all but the yellow did. It can depend so much on venue and mood of the fish?

A great video. I am new to fishing altogether but am a great learner. I made one batch split it into two bits. Both have juniper berries in. Then split and one had strawberry and hot chillie in it. The other Hoi Sin sauce and tomato and garlic. Both smell strong. What do you think? I cannot wait to try them out next week.

Top stuff. Going to make a batch of red chocolate malt boilies to this recipie at the weekend. Hopefully will save me a lot of money! Why not put kilos in? I'm away next year for a week and would normally use 10ish kilos over the week. Would there be any reason not to use this recipie in that scenario?
@FishingAroundUK
@FishingAroundUK 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, and for watching the video. It’s a great recipe and I’m sure it will save you a load of cash - come back and let us know how the red chocolate malt boilies go! The disclaimer about not chucking kilos in is mainly for my benefit; I cannot be sure that this recipe represents a complete nutritional long term food source for the fish, and so I would urge people to use their own best judgement and consider their own use case if they are thinking about producing these in volume because I cannot absolutely guarantee the nutrition levels and at the end of the day we want the best care possible for these fish.10 kilos is a lot of bait, but like you said, it is spread out over a week, and we don’t know how many fish will be feeding on it, hopefully a lot! So you might be alright. As a footnote there is a simple change to the recipe you can make, that I didn’t cover in the video as it isn’t particularly ‘free’, but that would make the recipe even better, both for you and the fish! If you have a spare packet of groundbait lying around, perhaps something krill-based but I’m sure any good quality mix would do, simply substitute in place of the 200 grams of plain white flour. As long as you keep the consistency the same as shown in the video, you get a load more attraction and nutritional content for the fish.

I just made the "TeriBerry" ones they are drying out as I type this I used all the same ingredients but blended the life out of it all first so I could use dry mix the only thing I done different was I added some Nyjer seeds then used a small amount of plain flour on my rolling board for the sausage rolling then rolled the boilies with a cheap small rolling table put them on the boil gave them the normal amount of time to do their thing then put them out to dry but noticed on a couple of them they had the flour still stuck to them made them look odd but still for the price of the ingredients I ended up doing two lots with all the ingredients I had made so I made a different lot with my own flavours and then made these with your flavours and you are right different ingredients make life difficult but I've ended up with a kilo of 2 different flavoured baits for about 5 quid and still have left over ingredients because it's all straight out of the kitchen cupboard and what wasn't in the cupboard is now so I'm fairly happy with that but I have to say these "TeriBerry" boilies smell very suspiciously like boilies I used to buy from a tackle shop I knew many many years ago let's just hope they work as well anyway fantastic video I'm glad I come across it when I did because I'll be using my boilies at the weekend first time I've ever made my own boilies so fingers crossed.

Hey Nice vid but I had a question what should I do if I want pop ups but I don’t have a microwave I have just an oven?😕
@FishingAroundUK
@FishingAroundUK Жыл бұрын
Hi there, thanks for watching :) I don’t recommend using an oven - it makes the outer skin crunchy but locks moisture in the centre, and you won’t get the same pop up effect. Instead of making microwave pop ups, just dry the boilies as shown in the video and then when they are ready for use, take the ones you want to use as pop ups, drill holes in them and insert some cork. You can get cork dowels for this purpose from your local tackle shop, but I find the microwave method easier personally. The cork dowel method works for other types of bait as well like tiger nuts, which is a plus!

Search a video for "floater cake", if I remember correctly it's basically double the normal eggs for the mix and cook in the oven. Tight lines mate.

@FishingAroundUK
@FishingAroundUK 16 күн бұрын
Hello there, thanks for watching :) The base mix does float reliably, so one of two things has happened; you’ve either A./ not microwaved them long enough as shown in the video or much more likely B./ whatever you have added to the base mix as flavouring is causing the boilie to sink. Some ingredients work better than others, and it’s a bit of trial and error with what you want to use

Hi there, thanks for watching. Yes, absolutely, if you already have those in your cupboard at home. A very popular basic base mix recipe consists of flour, rice flour, maize flour and semolina, and what I’m showing you how to do in this video is reverse-engineer an approximation of that same base mix, by purely using stuff you probably have in your cupboards already, without having to buy any special ingredients :)
