July, the month of berries! But how to preserve the glut? Jam is too sweet. So Rob experiments with making fruit leather from raspberries, blackcurrants and jostaberries with this super simple no-extra-ingredients method. But will he succeed?

Your grandmother and mother are so youthful. This is the first time I heard of fruit leather, but sounds scrumptious!
@robsdiscovery

I'll show them your comment. They'll be pleased 😁 It bodes well for me if I have similar genetics 😄 It is indeed scrumptious, though a tad tart without any added sweetness 😖 It's quite a novelty tasting those berries once their season has long since passed 😋

this berry fruit leather looks delicious! My granny was making fruit leather of Quinces. Sadly there are hardly any quinces know these days, unless from the old gardens.
@robsdiscovery

It really was! 😋 I've noticed that too 🤔 Hardly any quinces around nowadays. There's a beautiful one in the grounds of Wells Cathedral. Maybe I should take a surreptitious cutting 🌱😉

Hi Rob. Great to see your abundance. I used to have many blackcurrants plants and used to harvest by pruning the branches near their base and piling the cuttings into a wheelbarrow, then sat in a comfy chair and picked the berries while having a cuppa. The cuttings were shoved back intobthe ground to make new plants. A very relaxing way to harvest and prune at the same time.

I just remember a jam cooking method that's very slow cook low temperature with zero zucker. I think the "Jam boy" who started a jam company out of scratch has developed it.

Hi Rob, I had a go at making this with raspberries and no sugar. It worked fairly well and we rolled it up and put it in a plastic pot for later...... a year on and we both have COVID so an opportunity to clear up with the 10days we have to isolate so I found it. We gave it the taste test and cant taste any flavour, only the 'sourness' which gave us a big fit of the giggles and reminded us of your experiment. Thanks very much for sharing. Stay safe!
@robsdiscovery
@robsdiscovery 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, mine was pretty sour! 😖😆 I'd love to try making it again, without sugar, but don't know what the secret is to preserving taste 🤔 Maybe it's not in the making of it but the consumption... Like eating it with something sweet! 😂

They look so yummy. I can eat them all in minutes. It's hard to gather berries here in Taiwan. The hot temperature doesn't allow us to plant so many berries but only in some areas in high mountains. It's a good way to preserve fruit like this way,too. Thanks for showing us the experiment.
@robsdiscovery

They really were! 😋 Yes, I've heard that about the lack of berries in Taiwan but it's a mixed blessing because there's so much other delicious fruit to choose from there! And yes, you're right, it will work with most fruit! 🍇🍉🍌 🤗

Hello Rob, I tried it with berries anf the with purple plums. Added apple to both. I dried them in oven at 70C and the oven door very slightly open to let excess moisture out. Thinner the paste the better. Fee drops of olive oil on the paper before I put the paste makes it easier to take it out when it is dry. Sun drying would probably be better and cheaper...(but dont have enough sun here for now) Loved it!! Will try many more fruits. Thank you very much for the idea. 🙏🙏

@robsdiscovery 4 жыл бұрын
@@aysen8366 Hello! Well done! And thank YOU for the tips! Such simple things but I didn't think of them. It's very much plum & apple season here now so will try it with them, thinner layer and with the olive oil. Though here too the sun is now too weak for sun drying so perhaps the oven will have to serve as a decadent one off experiment 🤔

Rob, there's definitely some issue with this channel. Whenever I ask my friends to search for it over KZbin, it isn't easy to find also, despite adding an alarm notification for your new content, I never recieve those. I love your videos, they calm me. I firstly thought that was limited to India but now my friends in the KSA, USA , Greece and Argentina find it hard to find your channel on KZbin.

@@robsdiscovery well, almost every channel has grown from a few hundreds to hundred thousand or in many cases in millions during the global lockdown situation. Your subscriber count hasn't moved up. If you see my own channel, you'd be surprised that I have no videos, no photo, no content, not even a sensible name but I have 1.6k subscribers. Your channel should have atleast 1 million. Well, I have a huge crush on you and I keep visiting your videos whenever I want some solace and peace of mind. I found out about this video now ! Received no notification about it either ! 🙄 You're a dream boy ! I wish if we stayed in the same city, I would've volunteered to help you in the gardening.

@@abc_cba That's really interesting. I suspect what's happening with the notifications is that now that I have some patrons I post the video as unlisted (giving them the link as one of the 'perks') a week before I make it public 🤷🏻‍♂️ And with regards to your other comment, that's most flattering to hear And again, wonderful you find them relaxing. That's one of my aims, so I feel like I'm succeeding! 😄 Whereabouts are you from?

@@robsdiscovery Well, I'm from India. Well, the most beautiful part about your channel is that you never have rock music or something that strays one from the splendid sight of the nature. I once watched your video on watercress (2 years back) until I watched your video on Rhubarb a few months back and simply was surprised by your content. I wonder how on Earth are you single? Any woman (or a gay guy in my case) would go nuts to date a gorgeous guy with such beautiful cerulean eyes, scintillating smile, that sparkle of yours? Would you ever be my date if you're in India for a visit ? Don't worry you don't have to be gay for that. We can still be friends as we share the same hobby and passion for growing fresh produce.

@@abc_cba I do actually have a girlfriend so she may have something to say about that 😂 but I'm gladly sucking up all these compliments! 😄 That's also really encouraging to hear what you say about the videos as I do really try to make them calm, and avoid using music that jangles one's nerves. (Apart from the occasional poorly rehearsed accordion solo! 😄) even if it makes them a bit longer, the information isn't 'fired' at you like many of the shorter 'busy' type videos.. Which certainly have their place but you've got to be quite awake & alert to be able to listen to them! 😄 I'm fascinated by India, even though I've not been there. Whereabouts more specifically are you from?
