HOW TO Make HAND-PAINTED TILES & POTTERY at HOME (without a KILN)!

Learn how to create easy beautiful hand-painted tiles, vases, plates, cups and more without a kiln using PEBEO PORCELAINE 150 and your own oven at home. I'll show you how at the Chateau de Lalande, home of my gorgeous friend Stephanie Jarvis and her boyfriend ‪@philipjanssen‬ from ‪@TheChateauDiaries‬, joined by Philip and other members of Stephanie's family . See first time attempts at painting blue and white pottery, porcelain/china tiles in the style of Delft, Portuguese azulejos, majolica and faience with delightful results. Washable and dishwasher-safe!

HOW TO PAINT TILES & CERAMICS AT HOME (WITHOUT A KILN)!
MATERIALS:
White porcelain, china or glazed pottery tile, plate, mug, vase, etc.
PEBEO PORCELAINE 150 PAINTS in your choice of colours
Denatured Alcohol (Methylated Spirit) or Rubbing Alcohol
Tracing Paper
Carbon Paper
Grease or charcoal pencil
Soft paintbrushes
Pot of water for cleaning
Oven
Step 1:
Choose your project. Tile, plate, mug, vase... the choice is yours. Make sure it's white and already glazed.
Step 2:
Clean the tiles with the Denatured Alcohol or Rubbing Alcohol to remove any traces of dust or greasy residue.
Step 3:
Decide your design.
Can you draw? Or, do you prefer to trace another image? If so, print the image and then trace the outline onto tracing paper.
Step 4:
If you have traced your image, place a piece of graphite paper face down onto your tile and then trace the image again. The pencil or graphite will burn away in the oven. If you prefer to express your creativity directly, draw your design with a greasy pencil (such as a 6B) directly onto the tile.
Step 5:
Using the Pebeo Porcelaine 150 paints or markers, begin painting your tiles. Thinner applications will look more authentic and will be less likely to chip later. You can also use a fine sponge to create a very fine, solid band of colour.
Step 5:
Allow your work to dry completely for 24 hours. After 24 hours have passed, preheat oven to 150 C or 300 F. Bake for 35 minutes.
Step 6:
Remove very carefully and allow to cool! Et… voila!

Hello! I’m Vivienne, the châtelaine of a small 19th century neo-Renaissance castle in the Loire Valley of France, which I share with my delightful (and wonderfully funny!) husband, Simon, our daughter, and -whenever possible- lovely friends and family.
This is not our first chateau! 23 years ago, we bought a much larger castle nearby, which we loved with all our hearts. However, nearly 2 decades, many happy memories, countless renovations, and several small fortunes later, we made the very difficult, empty-nesting decision to downsize. With great luck and perseverance, we found our current petit château, which we are now decorating and updating with love, humour, comfort, and -of course- antiques and art!
We adore France and its many unique facets: its people, culture, landscapes, wine, food, art, and history. We also love being surrounded by châteaux, both public and private, which we can explore together! After 20 years here, we have learned many things about living in France, renovating châteaux, and appreciating the extraordinary riches surrounding us. We originally decided to make these videos as a way to share our lives with our loved ones worldwide during the pandemic lockdowns. However, we soon realised that many others are at home alone, and it is our privilege to open our home to you, our new friends. Vivienne, I am so glad to know that you also china paint, like me. I have been painting since the late 70s. I studied under Mabie Hudson and Glenda Novak in Atlanta as well as a couple of others that would come in and do a special study. Mostly I do the 'wipe out' method, instead of painting in. The tiles turned out really well, and what a favorite personal touch they turned out to be for Stephanie. Oh my this was fun to watch. Everyone's tiles turned out wonderfully. Phillips was amazing. You could have knocked me down with a feather when I saw Isabelle's inspiration piece. I had shopped earlier in the day at my local thrift store in Indiana USA, and held the same bird in my hands. I had never seen one before, and unfortunately I could tell something had broken off. I wondered idly what it could have been and put it back because I didn't think I could fix it. I never would have thought that it held a candle stick! What a small world we all live in!

We received our wonderful mugs with your fantastic artistry. We watch all the chateau renovation shows starting with Stephanie and Michael back in 2020. Not to play favorites, but your artistry is the best. If you could ever find a way produce copies of your hand painted china, I think it would do well. And Simon. Knock off the cheese!
