Merzbow > Vomir. I said it. I’ll be real here, as a noise artist (yes, I said artist) and fan, I like my HNW is doses. Sometimes I will just put Merzbow on full blast and clean my whole fucking house. But for the most part, I like my harsh noise to stab at parts. Maybe I’m just more into industrial noise, I guess. Personal preferences and shit, not kink shaming anyone at all here. For all the people asking how people can enjoy noise, I somewhat have a super flawed theory: to enjoy noise music, you have to enjoy making it. Most people I know that love noise music, are noise artists. From space drone to glitch noise to HNW. I grew up absolutely loving making sounds with anything I could get my hands on. The more abrasive, the better. I just really, really enjoy the freedom of making noise music over anything else. For me, it’s pure, raw emotional expression. And just for the record, I’m a classically trained pianist, a banjo picker, and an occasional guitarist. Also, I make hip hop beats. But noise is where my heart is. But since I’ve said nothing about the video yet: fucking hilarious and I love it 😂 I was hoping you’d do one soon and by god, ya done did it.

I agree with your theory, as a guitar player myself, I have a few pedals lying around, and I use an MXR Carbon Copy Delay to create the stabs and such. The great thing about noise is the oddly soothing nature of it, it is a lot like ambient music in that you can tune in and out of it and still get a unique experience from it. It's easy to pump out shitty noise music but there are projects that really are mind-bending and cool. And noise is even bleeding to the mainstream lately, in hip hop with Dalek or clipping, electronic artists like Sophie and black dresses, noise rock is getting pretty popular too. It's easy to cross out the bare raw experimentation at first glance but it really has a lot to offer if you can get past the snobby exterior
@nikolademitri7314 жыл бұрын
Agustín Videla Great comment, though the only part I’m not so sure of is that noise bleeding into all these genres is something “lately”, at least if what you mean to say is that it’s a new development.. I mean, yes, you are correct, but I’d only point out that it’s something that’s been going on for a while. Maybe it’s more popular now? I’m not sure, bc I can think of a lot of artists who were doing it a couple decades ago, and they weren’t nobodies, some even were on major labels and making quite violent cacophonies.. I’ll at least give you one thing regarding “lately”, and that’s it does seem like use of noise, especially harsher noise, has increased significantly over the last decade, particularly in hip hop and “pop music” (where it’s existed in various ways for a while, but not to the extent and degree it does now, definitely). Still, all this said, noise/white noise being used in genres that aren’t just noise obviously isn’t harsh noise, wall noise, etc.. and I think one could have a harder time arguing what’s the chicken or the egg, aka, was white noise used in other formats/genres first, or used as it’s own “dark ambient aesthetic” of noise first (probably not how any early artist utilizing it would like to be characterized), or just as a means of exploring texture with sound, etc, as many early electronic pioneers were interested in, and it just evolved from there? Since I was a teenager (so for almost exactly 20 years of my life) I became very interested in actually tracing all the lines and lineages in modern, western music, to the extent that one can, and your comment has really put my mind back in this space, but now of wondering how harsh noise evolved from white noise, how and when it interacted with disparate genres, whether or not it can even be directly connected to “drone music” as a “progression”, or if that’s just silly (drone is, after all, multiple millennia old, and played by our ancestors, and still played in various tribes/ethnic folk traditions).... I’m sorry I’m rambling, and now completely disconnected from your original point, but it was your comment that got me thinking back through all the popular and underground iteration of “noise music” that I’m aware of, and it’s made me wonder where this *really* started.. which I know is separate from your point, which again, I mostly agree. Lol.. I’ll digress ffs.. cheers ✌️♾

Since you are doing smaller genres, do tonefield next. "What is tonefield?" Tonefield as a sub-genre started with people trying to guess what colorfield painting genre (check album covers for example of this painting genre) would be if it was a music genre . Those same guys decided to list the colorfield painting characteristics and use, logic, painting skills, and music theory skills to convert those characteristics to music ones. In the end the sub-genre works is basically like this: 1-Song is mono (unless its impossible like cd, then it has the exact same thing at all channels) 2- The song start with a silent part with 2 second (or more) or with a tone a tone with 2 second or more (tone must have same waveform, frequency and amplitude during its entire length) 3-Song ends or continue with with a new silent part with 2 second (or more) or with new a tone a tone with 2 second or more (tone must have same waveform, frequency and amplitude during its entire length) 4-Go back to 3. One label that has this stuff wavelength2.bandcamp.com/ There is also a positive thing about doing a episode with tonefield, almsot literallly every single tonefield song sucks ALOT, but the genre has potential to have good songs or at least a normal song. If you make a decent or normal song, it will be the first good/decent tonefield song ever.

Now that we have the precedent: you should do Japanoise (msbr, melt-bannana), Danger Music (Justice Yeldham), Avant-Metal (Mr. Bungle, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum), and Art Rock (The Books of Knots, Melvins, Fantomas). It would be a blast seeing you make that kind of music :)

I think the wobbling (maybe?) and the fade-out at the end where fucking inspired. Really made me live in a society. 11/10 would listen aGAIN.

3:02 RIP Minóy. Legit one of the best dark ambient artists of the '80s and, while not actually a HNW guy, definitely one of the forerunners to The Aesthetic. Anyway, on to the video proper: I think one thing that needs to be understood with HNW is that, like Brian Eno's concept of holographic ambient music (as on albums like Neroli, Thursday Afternoon, etc.), the principle is less that it doesn't change or lacks dynamics per se as it obliterates the listener's conception of time and landmarks. You don't pick out a single part you like because the point is that it feels like it's all one endless moment where everything is happening all at once. It's a very zen kind of thing. It can also be very memey and silly, obviously, and there's a kind of perverse joy in that, particularly when you take a really dumb or weird sound source and turn it into the loudest possible sound, but there's also something to be said for creating something by trivial, absurd or innocuous means which also has that weird meditative time-stopping power to it.

I think you're the only one that understand the important thing in HNW (or any other experimental art...). You can call it music, as you can call painting a Pollock's work... but it goes far than that...

I love making noise shit but god yeah it's mostly abunch of fucking around until I find something I enjoy. I think a lot of musicians can say the same.

Ah yes, the good old "I don't get it, so I'll just call it pretentious." Very nuanced.

Comming from someone who loves Merzbow, its extremely hard to explain. Its the slow changing over time that makes it great. I find it extremely calming when my anxiety is trying to ruin me.
