Metal, to it's very core, is about looking at the other bands, and making it a point too be better than them. Heavier, faster, more sinister, more violent, grotesque... etc. That's where all the genres came from. Heavy Metal itself was made by guys who enjoyed rock, but wanted something heavier and darker. Evolution ensued.
