How to Make Herbal Liniments

An adaptation of the classic Jethro Kloss herbal remedy for occasional minor aches and pains. The liniment will be applied to the skin and the alcohol will evaporate rapidly allowing the herbs to penetrate quickly to accomplish such actions as relieving sore muscles and increasing circulation.

This is a western version of dit da jow, essentially. You don't use rubbing ahohol with those, though. Just some cheap 80 proof vodka. Agitate twice a day and keep it in the dark for 3 to 6 weeks before first use.

+Brittany Priest Hi Brittany, an herbal liniment of this method is pretty much a tincture! They are both excellent for including in cosmetics. You can infuse herbs into your preferred carrier and they are all excellent methods, I enjoy infusing into witch hazel for facial toners, oils for lotions and alcohol for tinctures and for adding a bit of extra botanical goodness to my toners and sprays. Yes! You'll notice lots of herbal extracts are already contained within your beauty products from the store. Extracts are made with a solvent, which can be either water, CO2, alcohol, or glycerine, and then added to the formula. Normally that extract would be part of a formula and not on it's own. Please make sure to consult a medical practitioner or herbalist before directly applying an extract to the skin.

This is a good example of making linaments. I would only add that I put a litle more info on my labels i.e. where the herbs were obtained, where the linament was made, latin names of herbs, what it can be used for. I would also mix the herbs prior to putting them in the jar.

A liniment is for topical use only. Especially with isopropyl alcohol. *Rubbing alcohol can kill you if ingested.* It is used primarily because of its stable shelf life, quick evaporation and it leaves zero residue (unlike oils). Tinctures are made with ethanol or drinking alcohol. They are intended for internal use. They are more like pharmaceutical pills but in liquid form. So you take a dropper and drip several drops of tincture on your tongue.
