For Aussies, substitute for Kleen Off is Windex or generic clones. I've used it as an ersatz airbrush cleaner of water based acrylics for the past 40 years. Rinse with a water flush after.

Hey Bobby, loving the channel and all you post. My models are getting better because of you. I made your home brew cleaner and it’s great on Tamia paints but really struggling to clean some Alclad paints, specifically the primer. Have you had any problems and could you give me some tips.

alclads is laquier base mate, home brew is best for acylic based paints

Never let anything with ammonia (like Windex, etc.) "dry" in your airbrush. In fact, never run your cup out of paint OR cleaner. Keep it "wet". For example, if using Bobby's mix or any other cleaner mix that includes ammonia, first remove any excess paint in the cup, using a pipette. Add thinner and shoot some through the brush. Clean the cup and add a bit more thinner. Shoot some of it. Add the cleaner mix and shoot it. Do NOT' run your cup until empty! Don't let it dry inside your brush. Wait a minute, to let it work. Then shoot again. Once the brush shoots "clean", remove remaining cleaner mix from cup using pipette. Add thinner (I use IPA + distilled water blend) and shoot enough through to be sure to flush all the ammonia-containing cleaner out of your brush. Shoot - pause - shoot. Clean cup if needed. Inspect needle through cup hole. Repeat as needed. Once you are satisfied that you have purged all the cleaner, you are done. I learned this "secret" from a pro. If you don't let the paint cup run empty when painting, you will have less effort to clean up the paint. Don't let the paint get dried in the brush by running until the cup is empty. Same goes for the cleaner, but is much more important. The ammonia will not "de-chrome" your brush as long as you don't let it oxidize (i.e. dry) on the metal. Let it cut the paint but flush it immediately with IPA and distilled water.

HI, love your videos but this one is very slightly confusing. In a nutshell is this the formula? Home brew thinners Amonia Cleaner (About 5ml) A few glugs of 3 in 1 oil Top up with 99.9% IPA So basically its got a higher concentration of IPA?

I'm almost sure it's isopropyl alcohol. He uses that same can in the thinner video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/imnOZHWAeJ1jf7M ) as well and it's a logical combination

The big bottle is Isopropyl alcohol, IPA, right ? That has very high odor aswell. You should mention aswell the danger of these substances. IPA is easily penetrated through your skin and can cause nasty things. And why not recommend of using gloves and goggles. I mean as an instructor, you should maintain good practises over everything else.

If you are old enough to buy it you are old enough to read the label and follow the instructions. Your all grown up now, you dont have to rely on your mum to come and clothe you in the morning and tell you whats safe to eat and do. We use sharp metal blades too, I'm sure that will stop you sleeping at night with that thought. Bobby - thanks, that was helpful to me.

Indeed. Anyway, ammonia will be forbidden soon. Alcohol isn't enough for recent lacquers, they need stronger solvents thus more dangereous to breeze.

I was going to ask the same thing, it was one of the first things we learned in chemistry. NEVER use ammonia on chrome or any hard metal finish as it will not just eat the chrome, it literally dissolves it. Personally I am going to try this myself but I am swapping out the ammonia for white vinegar as it will not react with and destroy the airbrush finish. I suppose though if properly diluted it would not be that bad but not sure I want to chance it on a $400 brush!

Kevin Morrison I am very partial to Badger as I’m friends with Ken the owner and his first words to me were don’t EVER use ammonia or even lacquer thinner in your air brushes. Not to mention straight ammonia. I was using windex with Ammonia in it. I actually left my airbrush which was a mess soak in my ultra sonic cleaner in lacquer thinner one time for four hours. Took it out cleaned it up went to use it and seals were blew.

Yea I had an old airbrush that I did a similar thing to using Windex w/ammonia and I think about the same time soaking as you did and watched as the seals literally fell apart. Was only about 6 months later and found that brush had some really bad pits in it and I know it was because of the ammonia.

You will first need his home brew thinner that he makes. Here is the link (kzbin.info/www/bejne/imnOZHWAeJ1jf7M). Wish he would have put this in the notes, it took some searching to find it and these Brits English is so bad it was near impossible to know what it was he said to watch but I found it nonetheless. Hope it answers your question...;)

Atomized ammonia and mineral oil?? REALLY.. I appreciate the good content you make, but this is a serious health risk. If you want to use such a harmful concoction you shouldn't be promoting it AT ALL. Most people have little to know clue about the harmfulness of such chemicals.. I'll quot just a few of the symptoms: Respiratory - the extent of injury produced by exposure to ammonia depends on the duration of the exposure, the concentration of the gas, and the depth of inhalation. Even fairly low airborne concentrations (50 ppm) of ammonia produce rapid onset of eye, nose, and throat irritation; coughing; and narrowing of the bronchi. More severe clinical signs include immediate narrowing of the throat and swelling, causing upper airway obstruction and accumulation of fluid in the lungs. This may result in low blood oxygen levels and an altered mental status. Mucosal burns to the tracheobronchial tree can also occur. Immediate onset of laryngospasm with respiratory arrest can occur. AMMONIA IS NO JOKE
