How to make Mason Jar Butter
INGREDIENTS
1 pint sized (16 oz) mason jar
1 cup heavy cream (38% fat content)
cold water
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Pour heavy cream into the mason jar, filling it half-way full. Screw the lid on.
2. Shake mason jar for approximately 5-7 minutes. After the first 2 minutes you'll have whipped cream. Keep shaking until you hear that a lump has formed inside, and shake an additional 30-60 seconds after that.
3. Remove the solids from the jar. The remaining liquid is buttermilk. You can save that for other recipes, or discard it.
4. Place the solids into a small bowl. Pour cold water over the butter and use your hands to squish it into a ball. Discard water and repeat rinsing 2 times more.
5. At this point you have butter. You can add in things like salt, honey, and herbs to create flavored butters, or serve in its pure form as is.

Quick tip, if you let the cream reach room temperature it will help with the separation. It takes me 3 minutes to make.

Love this! This gave me a flashback to kindergarten when our teacher had our class sit in a circle and she put cream in a mason jar and we all took turns shaking and then passing the jar to the person next to us. We were all amazed that we made butter. One of the few things I remember from 40 some years ago. Thanks for the refresher course. Very cool! 😉 👍🏼 ❤️

My siblings and I also made butter like this when we were kids on the 1960s and early 1970s. We also used raw milk/cream for our butter - use to buy it from a local farmer in wide-mouth gallon jars...and each gallon would have like 2 inches of cream floating on the top of the milk. My mom also use to make a sour butter. She would let cream sit in the fridge and she would smell it every day. The first day she smelled it and it smelled slightly 'off' she turned it into butter. So we had the choice of sweet butter and sour butter. I rather liked the sour butter.

Raw dairy is a great way to get sick
@StormyPeak
@StormyPeak 10 ай бұрын
@@horsegirlb7120 I drink raw dairy all the time. And raw milk, the way it's produced now, the odds of it making any one sick is super super low. With approximately 9.4 million people drinking raw milk, that means you have about a 1 in 6 million chance of being hospitalized from drinking raw milk. Also, for about 15 years it was illegal to sell raw dairy in Idaho, but they dropped that law and we can once again get raw dairy. Our local store has raw milk being sold right along side 'brand name' pasteurized milk. You are under this concept that raw milk production now is like that from the time when Old McDonald didn't use sanitary methods in collecting milk, nor had to muck out the barns, TEST his cows and their milk for harmful bacteria...etc. Raw milk is better for your gut than that desert of white sugar water with some cream blended in so much that it can't form on top stuff they sale for milk. The raw milk dairymen, have their barns and milk production tested more often and their standards for keeping healthy clean cows is far greater than that of milk producers who know their milk is going to be sterilized and homogenized. Again, raw milk sold in stores, the dairymen have to pass stringent inspections and levels of sanitation. I drink raw milk as much as possible...and only because I'm poor I can't afford it, as the mass produced sterilized milk is cheaper.

I just tried this and it was easy. After about seven minutes using roughly 4 oz of heavy cream I had a round ball of butter about twice the size of a golf ball. I added about a 1/4 thimble full of fine ground salt before shaking. Most of the salt flavor seemed to end up in the buttermilk (which didn't really taste good). The butter is pretty good. Thanks.

@@jaidynreneee People in the country buy their butter too. Probably no more of them make their own than people in the city do. It's not about where you live. It's about how enthusiastic you are about doing some things like this for yourself. I think there are more woke hippie city douche bags making butter than there are genuine old school country folk with cows and operational small farms doing it.
