What is the difference between tap water and fresh water? Please answer, i want to try this with my kids. Thanks
@wethecurious10 жыл бұрын
Julie Neal Hi Julie, water that comes out of the tap will not be pure H2O, and therefore will contain particles that will act as a nucleation point for the formation of ice crystals. A sealed bottle of fresh (or still) water has been filtered and purified, and so should be free of anything which will aid the formation of ice crystals. I hope that's useful, let us know how you get on.

I like cool coffee but pouring block of ice is not my favorite. I always put it in refrigerator, mostly on freezer. It have reliability issue as sometime the refrigerator on sleep. I make it at night to drink in morning, or forgotten until night again. There are no exact timing. After 2-3 hour you get nice cool and little bit thick coffee. 3-5 hour you get stuff like those instant ice, a very soft and ice cream like texture that melt on your mouth. 5-7 hour the top will be frozen solid, had to pierce using fork to make a hole and the liquid below will flow, like a coconut where you can scratch the frozen part and make some crushed ice coffee. Longer than that will totally frozen it, had to wait an hour at least to defrost or you can scratch it with fork tips then shovel it like eating shaved ice. The 3-5 hour, jelly like ice is what i want people to taste. It is so good, the texture are what make it fantastic. And those instant ice exactly look like that.

can i ask what is is a nucleation point can u plss elaborate it a little more....i cant understand i need to know ..... right now.... for science report
@wethecurious9 жыл бұрын
+Angel Alegre A nucleation point is a point around which the ice crystals can start to form. It can be a small particle like dust or salt, or even another piece of ice. 'Still' water does not contain any impurities, and therefore no nucleation points for the ice to start to form around. This is why 'supercooled' water remains a liquid below zero degrees without freezing into ice. Hope that helps with your report :-) - Ross

is it ok if i leave it for like more than 30 minutes?
@wethecurious8 жыл бұрын
+muke lemons It should be ok if you leave it a little longer. You want to leave it for long enough so that the water slowly cools to well below zero degrees, but not so long that it freezes regardless of the 'supercooling' factor. Of course, if you leave it for a _really_ long time, it will warm back up again. We've found through trial and error that 30 minutes gives the most reliable results, and balance between time and temperature. - Ross

@wethecurious8 жыл бұрын
+muke lemons Hi, are you referring to the 100mL of tap water in the beaker mentioned in point 3 of the equipment at 0:39 ? If you are referring to the bottle of water that becomes frozen, you will need an *unopened* bottle of still/fresh water, _not_ tap water. Let me know if you have any further questions & good luck with your project. - Ross
@anayadeguzman41498 жыл бұрын
+At-Bristol Science Centre oh im referring to the 100mL tap water because i don't have a beaker :(
@wethecurious8 жыл бұрын
+muke lemons The 100mL of water is mixed with salt and added to the metal container (1:22). You don't have to use a beaker, you could just use a plain glass or cup and approximate 100mL. - Ross

+Izabelle Barbac Hi Izabelle, if the water remains as a liquid and doesn't freeze when poured or shaken, it's not cold enough. Try packing it in more ice and salt, and use a thermometer to check the temperature of the surrounding ice (it can get as cold as -20 celcius). Let us know if you're still having any problems & we'll do our best to help. Good luck, keep trying! - Ross
