Your receiver is probably equipped with a calibration mic! It's a very powerful and useful tool but it isn't always correct. If you're not careful, your receiver could make some big mistakes! This video will help you identify them!

You are a breath of fresh air. I understand you so much! More then other people’s opinions on this. You are talking to the majority of us folks who don’t have the BIG PERFECT THEATER. But rather everyone, including the average home theater folks. Thanks so much! Your explanation on calibration really hit home with me in keeping the settings down below or at zero when using meter set at 75db. I subscribed to you because your so easy to understand. Keep up the great work. 👍🏽

One question please. I have an old onyko at the time, and I can only choose between height speakers or rear speakers. What would you recommend. Right now AND I NO ITS A BIG NO! But I’m running the height and rears on the same line. I know what you’ll say. Just need to hear it from this great teacher. Thank you. Ray.

Great video Kpaceguy..Thanks! Be careful changing distance for your speakers-the system is accounting for measured phase and delay in your room. Your sub was adjusted to compensate for the wireless connection. Once speakers are set to small, crossovers are usually in the 60-120 HZ range (small atmos/satellites may be 150 or so). THX suggests 80 HZ and that may be a good starting point to test for best crossover point. I'd be careful with 40 or below unless your speakers and receiver were able to accurately reproduce a 40 HZ reference tone safely and without distorting other frequencies or clipping. The center channel is an important channel in the surround setup- it carries 60-70% of a movie's audio track. Ensuring that is matched with the rest of the system and the correct crossover is applied is crucial.

Thank you Mr. Kenn. I figured the wireless system to my second sub was introducing a delay that the calibration was interpreting as extra distance. I came here for this comment.

I took this guy's advice and re-calibrated my receiver, and also manually took measurements between my speakers and seating position, as well as turning down the dB of my speakers, as well as adjusting the crossover frequency of each speaker and WOW! What a difference. All my settings were wrong. My advice for all amateur home theater advocates: watch this video and take notes; do what this guy says! This guy definitely knows what he's talking about. It improved my sound system considerably and cost me nothing but time. GREAT video, VERY helpful.

You are right about the amp setting your sub 2 at 38 feet away because of the delay from the svs transmitter but wrong that you should change it. Let me explain as you point out yourself speakers further away will take longer for the sound to reach the listener than closer ones, When audyssey sends a test tome to a speaker it times how long it takes for that sound to arrive at the microphone thats how it works out the distance but its not really the distance that maters. what it is really working out is how much of a delay there is so it knows how much earlier it needs to send the sound out of the speakers that are furthest away from the listener ( can you see where are going with this :) ) So as your transmitter adds a delay it needs to take that into account, that is why it show the sub as being 38 feet away. Put another way it is measuring the total delay caused by the distance and the transmitter So like i say you should leave it as is

LPF for LFE must always be at 120hz and that's because this is for dedicated .1 sound that is recorded to sound from the sub channel on movies. If you adjust it lower you loose content. If you set subwoofer mode to LFE as you say it will sound ONLY when .1 effects takes place. You should configure it to LFE+MAIN in order sub to reproduce frequencies from LFE channel + speakers low frequencies (below your crossover level ex.80hz)
@MrKenn1230
@MrKenn1230 4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree except for one point. If any speaker in your setup is set to LARGE, lower bass can be duplicated on the sub (because your speakers and the sub are playing some the same frequencies) when you use the LFE+Main setting- but if corrected properly, it can help integrate the sub with the full range speaker for a smoother crossover. If your speakers are set to SMALL, the subwoofer will always reproduce bass and LFE track regardless of the LFE setting (there may be some audible difference depending on several factors (sound level and crossover) but it is usually very small if it is audible at all because the SMALL setting is telling your system to send all bass below the crossover to the sub all of the time.

Thank you for the video. Informative as usual. I already went back and made corrections in my system. My question for you is this since I know you have an Anthem AVM-70. When it set your levels, did it set your speakers in the plus range? Mine did. It set the center channel at +10.5. All of my speakers were set in the plus range. Of course I went back and I used zero as my reference and set them accordingly. I’m just wondering is it just me that the Anthem did this to.

Hello Kpaceguy, thank you for the informative video!!! Currently I have Bose Acoustimass speakers in my 11'x11' bedroom. I ran the calibration through my Onkyo receiver and set the distance accurately to the ear mark, but the rear surround speakers are drowning out the front speakers (all set to 40hz) during some dialog or music in a movie or TV show. I have my sound set to Dolby or Direct on the receiver. Even when I play around with the sound settings (All Channel Stereo, THX, etc) the sound still comes out the same that the rears are louder. Should I turn down the hz from 40hz to say 30hz? Thank you!

Hi K.! The wireless subwoofer signal introduces delay so you should take that into account! Do NOT change whatever receiver decides, typically it reads 6 meters more than its physical distance. I repeat, do NOT change that! :)
@MrKenn1230
@MrKenn1230 4 жыл бұрын
Great point. When your receiver measures distance, it is also accounting for any acoustic or electronic delays that may be in your system. That 39 ft measurement is accounting for the delay your wireless subwoofer signal introduced to your system-if you change it, it could put that sub's phase and signal out of alignment with the rest of your system.

Very good video and informative. So it’s recommended to put the test tone levels on 0 dB or below? I usually have mine at +12 each for my 5.2 set up and didn’t notice any problems. I’ll see what the 0 dB and below sound like. I think the LPF for LFE sound best at 120HZ. Also, on the Marantz receiver, does it matter if I put the Source level to +12 dB inside the inputs/source level? It increases the overall volume and I don’t think I noticed any distortion or issues with the speakers or Marantz receiver.
@Kpaceguy

The distortion comes when you start to really turn it up and you ask the receiver to play louder than it can

Hi, first of all let me say thank you for making a video trying to answer my question! The only way to say thanks is to subscribe and give this video a 👍 😉 It's very informative, if you haven't used the general settings of a sound receiver. But what I was trying ask with my question was about your experiences with the Audyssey App. What you did and why and what differences the changes of the frequency curves made (in a positive or negative way) And a small note about the distance to your subwoofer. Different distances could be corrected.(although your results are a little bit much apart ^^) I've read about a way to get better sound from a subwoofer by "playing around" with the distance to your sweetspot.(add or remove 0.5m/2feet(?) or more) By that you move the top of the sin wave and may get a fuller bass (I hope you get what I mean 😅) once again... thanks for the video. have a nice day ...😉

That"'ll be👍😎. Now with that out'a the way, 😃 First off I run a 3.1 setup for now, am getting my surrounds next week; and my Atmos in a coupla months. So, my Onkyo TX-NR686 crossover settings are as follows: Front Mains (Polk Audio Signature Series S55's) are set to 'small' and crossed over at 80hz even though they can go down to 32hz, I'm scared to cross them over too low. But the bass is awesome when listening to 2ch music in 'Pure Audio' mode... not sure if i want it any lower than that. My centre channel (Polk Audio S35) is also crossed over at 80hz, sounds nice and crisp. Like yours, my subwoofer is set to 120hz, but I had to tune it a little to manage the bass and a seamless crossover from the mains, 'cause there was some out of phase transition or something... But now, they are perfectly aligned. And I stay on Netflix or Dstv/Showmax.👌😂

More times than not you'll have to raise it. They probably recommend not lowering it because it changed what they corrected and/or bass management isn't easy for automatic calibration if I had to guess

My speakers sound much better setting them to large. Those Polks surely also should sound better using large?🤔🙄 I did an A/B non interrupted comparison and it wasn't even close and that's using JBL 590's. The whole theory about small for tower speakers must be directed to some pretty awful floorstanding speakers. I'm comparing music not a war movie only because I didn't test that aspect of performance. Either way, your experience may differ than mine!🤪😬

Right now it's a luxury, but it should be a necessity to have different stored preset calibration files, for music and for movies. You will need to have a unit with Dirac with multiple slots you can save to. You are right that running towers for large is ideal for music (better blending, and bass notes typically in the 60-100hz region, but movies will go down to sub 20hz or less, and there are no towers that will reproduce those notes with authority.

@@nonametofame I normally listen in 'Pure Audio' mode on my Onkyo TX-NR686, I've heard that in that mode the Receiver turns every circuitry activity off including the display and the EQ... would it by any chance override the crossover settings as well, and maybe run the front mains in full range?
@nonametofame
@nonametofame 4 жыл бұрын
@@Turtleback8024 Yes, it's to my understanding that a pure or direct mode will also turn off any bass management. Which typically means it will send your front speakers the full range of sound. Bass management is really crucial unless you have a perfect room. With proper room treatment, it can be "near perfect" but I like being able to dial in my settings, and apply reasonable boosts in bass and some roll off on the highs across the frequency range. Think of it as a complex, but extremely accurate EQ. And since nobody has a perfect room, or a large tower that can reproduce 20hz bass range with authority, it's best to use room correction, REW, then dial in your settings to your preferences. You can store multiple calibration files on your PC using the Audyssey editor, but not many will want to have to load a unique setting each time they either watch movies, or listen to music.

To be honest running the Yamaha calibration the measurements were so far off of what they actually were doing it manually it was ridiculous First mistake was it had all my crossovers lower at the 40 then it sit on my speakers to large all of them are bookshelves. Then the level and distances were completely wrong. actually, the levels were plus on everything. It only got one measurement, correct was pretty epically horrible. I attempted to try it with the settings that I had it was so far off and not cohesive none of the settings where accurate. Yamaha’s system ypao very unimpressed. It actually didn’t address anything lol especially if you have to correct everything lol almost hilarious.

Your ear is NOT the best calibration tool! REW and a mic are much much better. You will completely shit yourself trying to EQ speaker pairs by ear alone. It wont even be close. Trust me

If you want accuracy sure. But if accuracy doesn't sound good to you then I doubt you'll set it that way. Example. I boost 20-30 hz on my subs just because I love Deep low bass. But it's not necessarily ideal in terms of a flat response
