Hi , I got to do that in jr. HS in 1961 in science class when the teacher gave us free time and told each of us to do a project we want to do . There was a Bell jar, a vacuum pump and sealer , and lots of different kinds of wire for filaments and power leads. IT WORKED ! ! ! Thankyou for bringing back things like this ! ! ! !

Very cool. That wire is cool for a heat lamp. I think a graphite pencil lead would work too. Edison first used carbon coated cotton thread, but the vacuum was stronger. This makes me realize that if the wires in a light bulb are not coated, then they will always glow if they are thin enough. So... That's why they put glass on the wires before they get to the coils and wires they don't mind giving off glow. So Tesla was right, the glow is not from the electricity but from the electrons in the rarified vacuum air. This means helium should make a good light bulb gas because its nonreactive and tiny, but it leaks too well. So we know why they use other noble gasses like neon and argon. But I think the wire coil creates a magnetic field that may limit brightness. Maybe a bifilar coil would be brighter? A bifilar coil is one where the wire is folded in half before it is wound around an object, it cancels out a lot of the magnetic field and has weird properties. Anyway, cool video!
@stefanogrillo60405 жыл бұрын
its not brighter because its filled with co2 and nitrogen instead of xenon. and the wire need to be coiled before being itself coiled around a rod. but i can easily give a 10/10 for the experiment seccess . i think tesla maybe right in fact if if was for the glow and not the electrons its would simply heat and emits warm.

The candle is to deplete the oxygen from the jar, to delay the nichrome wire oxidation.

I think the main failure of this diy light jar would be if he leaves it in the upright position/ hangs it from the celling - the candle = used to remove oxygen and slight vacuum, will melt and fall into element and burn it out, if I had made this, would have put a valve in the lid to vacuum out the air/2x valves to put inert gas into it & vacuum out air 😉

If the filament wire is nichrome you don't need to use a candle. Nichrome doesn't oxidize in oxygen but it has a lower melting point, which means you can only get dull orange/yellow light from the bulb. It also has a lower efficiency than a standard incandescent bulb. So it can be used as a heat bulb instead of light bulb. If you use wolfram wire you need to use candle to remove oxygen, because wolfram oxidizes, but it has a higher melting point and it can output bright white light with an efficiency of a standard incandescent. Removing oxygen with a candle is not a good idea because the heat of the bulb will melt the candle. If you want to use wolfram wire you have to solder a metal pipe in the cap of the glass jar, remove the oxygen with a vacuum pump, then close the pipe with pliers. You can also solder/weld the pipe where you closed it to prevent oxygen from going back inside the bulb. That is more complicated, but you can still buy incandescent bulbs as industrial use. You can make incandescent bulbs more efficient but that's even more complicated, after you removed the oxygen, you need to replace it with halogen gas, that is how halogen bulbs work.

the candle kind of burns the air inside the jar and creates a vacuum, which stops the wire from just burning and not glowing
