How to make Liquid Soap or Body Wash from Bar Soap..DIY for Cheap!
How to make your own liquid soap, or body wash for cheap!
This easy recipe and process saves Big Money!
At least 10's of Dollars!
This is something we've done off and on over the years.
Really simple, works great, and it's worth the time.
For every 8 ounces of soap, use 1 gallon of water. 4 ounces = 1/2 gallon of water etc.
Adjust water and soap mixture as needed.
Here's the Steps.
1. Pick your favorite soap bar.
2. Grate the soap into a bowl or container.
3. Add hot water to the soap and stir until all the pieces have dissolved.
4. Allow soap mix to set for 8-24 hours. Soap should set, to a gelatinous consistency.
5. Mix the soap with a mixer or blender, add to your container.
6. Wash yourself. Repeat as needed.
That's really it, I don't add glycerin or anything else.
I haven't needed to and we use the soap daily.
Works very well..
Comments, suggestions, questions, or advice is welcomed.

For those asking about the slime: yes, slime happens. It takes longer with more water, but there is a simple solution. If your soap has become the consistency of snot, simply blend it again. This is from my own experience. I suspect it has to do with bonds. Once you blend it again it will continue to have that nice consistency for a while (until it doesn't and then repeat). Also, distilled water is the best option as your results may vary if you use tap or even boiled water, due to the mineral content of your water. This is especially true if you have hard water, as hard water reduces the effectiveness of soap. Great video!

Fantastic and entertaining video. I liked that you actually reduced the water content, as many of the commenters I had seen in various original recipe pages had trouble with the mixture being too watery and diluted. The final result looks fantastic. Will try it for sure.

I use two 3.5 oz soap bars with a gallon of water using the $1 "Dollar General" brand soap and it works great. Melting the bars in a half gallon of water letting it set then blending with the other half gallon of water. Their version of "Dial" and "Irish Spring" do the trick. I have made 3 batches using this method and am satisfied with how it works. I am now trying "Ivory" soap to see if it works the same, The setup time i have noticed is around two hours. I use a "Imusa" hot burner to cook the soap as it does not let the water boil. So far one gallon of body was for one dollar wins.!!!

I did this and had 3 months of plastic waste free bodywash. Thank you so much for showing us how this is done! I just did this again 2 days ago but this time I used an electric tea kettle. I then poured the water into a pump dispenser and used its straw to stir the soap. Maybe next time I'll shred the soap with a pepper mill. "I like peanut butter" is very clever btw :)

Great video, the simplest and clearest on YT. I made it first day just with Ivory, and used regular egg beaters to break up the congealed batch. I agree you don't need glycerin, the boiling seems to release a natural slipperiness from the pressed and dried bars.

I do this with African Black Soap. You just take a chunk and dissolve it in water. It is amazing how far it stretches. Interestingly with the African Black Soap hot water doesn’t work well. Room temp dissolves it much better.

The soap fares very well, it stays "fresh" for lack of a better word. It doesn't separate. It may thicken slightly. A quick shake of the bottle and it's back to whatever liquid state it was in. It works very well.

Hi again, I finally got to try this out, nice to see you still making replies here and there to the vid. I grated fine and added the boiling water to the bowl. As I blended the soap and broke up the bigger goopy pieces, the soap foamed up like a dog on rabies. Now I have a bowl of foam. It has only been an hour, still warm and just as watery and bubbly. I made sure to use just about a half gallon for one 3.7 oz bar... The soap uses oils and is an expensive organic bar. No lard it seems o__o

Oh my god, I love you lol. Every time I mention one of my diy "beauty" projects to my husband he rolls his eyes... until I mention the saved money and the fact that he'll never have to walk into a Bath & Body Works again. 99% of the videos/blogs I've seen about this sort of thing are all hippie and girly (not even one mention about the horsepower of the tools being used) and your video is so refreshing. The nice thing about these instructions is it isn't suggesting using any other products, like you mentioning glycerin. I am hesitant to add anything to the soap for fear of diminishing its quality in some small way. Just a silly thing. Nice to see I can just grind, boil and blend.

Word of advice, you shouldn't wait that long to put it into the bottle. The thickness will make it difficult to transfer into the bottle. I usually wait an hour until the mixture is cool and then transfer it to the bottle while it's still liquid, it's continues thickening up while in the bottle as the hours go by.

AWESOME, thank you! I'm just learning how to make my own all natural bar soaps, laundry soap, bath and beauty care products, etc. and was actually a little nervous to make the liquid soap, until now after watching your video! I had no idea that it was seriously this easy! I had bought several books on making soap, recipes, etc., etc., but of course those instructions weren't nearly as easy as yours. Well, it looks like I'll be grating up some soap tonight and boiling some water to make my teenage girls some all natural body wash, as well as showing them to make it themselves when they live on their own : )

It will start to harden over time. It won't be as hard as bar soap. After about a month you might need to shake, stir, or mix it again. Depends on the soap. I usually just need to shake it again. If you store a gallon or two for long term, you'll just need to mix it again. It'll still retain it's potency though. Thanks for commenting!

Yep.. Soaps like Dove or Oil of Olay or soaps that are heavy on moisturizers in them don't work as well. Regular soap works best. :)

I use Dove bar. Use 3 bars to 6 cups of water. Then let cool enough to add to your favorite containers. I prefer to add the grated Dove bar to the pot and use a whisk to dissolve and blend. Bring water to boil then reduce to low and add grated Dove bar. Do not let boil and stir until dissolved. It's just like the Dove body wash. Enjoy

One thing I did learn from this soap is...it is great and the liquid soap works well but is not one that lathers up a lot. It did during the liquidation process. However this soap seems to work better when applied to skin directly as a liquid. Not like on a loofa thing I use with naturally liquidated soaps. So bar soaps definitely work as liquid but depending on what you use, there may be differing quality in the lathering of soaps I suppose.

(cont.) 2nd time, heated this concoction slowly on back burner while heated another 2 cups distilled water to a boil, lowered heat, put in another bar or so of grated soap, allowed to melt & think (hard to remember now--been working on this for couple weeks now--keep pouring back in bottles after cool, then dumping back in pot to work some more) I added this to the big pot of original and stirred over medium heat for 4 more min, let set for at least 8 hours. Still watery...

It seems that Olay and Dove don't really act like soap. They act more like a moisturizing detergent. They don't want to thicken or congeal as good. You might have better luck with doubling the amount of soap. That almost defeats the purpose though. But you're right, you still save some money. Better than nothing. :) Thanks for commenting.

Castille soap, is basically all natural soap. It's usually made from plants as in no meat. Vegetable extract, may be what to look for. All natural or organic soap maybe yield better results than castille, the next time you go looking for it.

(cont) Was up to about 2 bars or little more so far. 3rd time, used last 2 cups of distilled water from gallon jug to melt 2 more as above, adding to larger pot heating on back burner, may have added another 1/2 tsp glycerin & 1/2 tsp honey I think after removing from heat. I think each time I boiled new water, reduced heat, melted new soap in it, added this to large pot 7 stirred additional 4 min. over medium heat, don't think I let sit as long, gave up after 5-6 hours & put back in bottles...

That's possible, you'd have to add more than a few drops. I make a smaller batch and it gets used before it congeals. Sometimes, I may add a little bit of water if it congeals to quickly. :)

First time, I heated about 12 cups distilled water to boiling, then reduced heat and added grated soap (about 5 oz) and 2 TBS glycerin, stirred constantly for 4 minutes (per some other instructions I saw on KZbin), removed from heat, added 2 TBS honey & 2 TBS coconut oil w/ vitamin E & essential oils mixed in, let sit a good 12 hours. Sounds like you may need to add a little bit of water and remix it. Some soaps like Ivory can get pretty thick when they sit for a while. It'll be a little slimy and a little thicker than liquid hand soap. Works the same though. :)
