Excellent video! How do I make a small business out of this fantastic idea? I am thinking "Farmer's Market". Also, what other "Recipes" for colognes-for-men are you willing to share? Marketing to women, they WILL want a selection to choose from!! I KNOW how expensive some of these Essential Oils can get! For the small spray-bottle shown & recipe shared, what would YOU sell this bottle for, for profit, of course?
@HeidiVillegas2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, T! I think sprays like this would be GREAT at Farmer's markets and also online. I mainly make up the blends for family, friends, and clients, but I suppose I could make some more videos! As far as figuring out the cost, you'd need to figure out the per drop cost of the oils, then do the figuring from there. Then I suggest taking your total cost (including the bottle and the label) and doubling or tripling that amount so you make a little profit. :-)

Love, love, love this video. Also see how passionate you are about it. My question to you is about Oakmoss. It is so honey like and I’m wondering how to correctly extract it because when I do, since it is so thick, I can’t tell how much I’m using while making my cologne. It seems like one drop is like 5 drops of a regular oil that isn’t so honey like. Does this make sense? For instance I want to make it a base note but I can’t accurately know if I’m putting 5 drops or not since it’s so thick. Any input would be great. Sorry for the run on here lol😂
@HeidiVillegasАй бұрын
Since it sounds like you're extracting your own (which is awesome), I suggest starting with very small amounts then adding more as needed. Let the combinations sit for several hours so you can get a sense of the final scent. :-) Good luck with that!

I read that once the essential oils are 100% pure steam distilled EOs, they are not phototoxic. What’s your feedback on this? Thank you.
@HeidiVillegas18 күн бұрын
Most of the chemical, bergapten, and other furanocoumarins are too heavy to be vaporized in the steam like other terpene molecules. So, to a great extent the phototoxicity is greatly reduced or completed gone with steam distillation.

Good questions! I use a higher dilution than most colognes, and I'm going to guess the scent may last an hour or more-- this would also depend on the person using it, as some people retain scent better than others. Thank you for this wonderful and comprehensive video. :) I'm new to this and I was wondering about adding other things. Would some carrier oil be beneficial? Wouldn't that improve the "staying power?" I suppose the addition of any water or witch hazel would defeat the purpose of using 95% alcohol. Thank you

There are several ways to make perfumes....you can certainly make a roller bottle or solid perfume style with the lipid oils. You could also make up the stock blend and use it at a 1% dilution in body lotion for layering, too.

Thank you, and welcome to the community! I made the video recipe for 2 ounces, but then ended up using a one ounce bottle for my dad. :-) You can adjust it for strength of scent to an extent. Just be careful of maximum dilution amounts for the specific essential oils. For example, a highly phototoxic oil like bergamot shouldn't be used at greater than 0.4% in a preparation. Just check all the safety for each EO, if you want different sizes. I hope this helps!

Smell them together, and you'll get a sense if the combination will work. :-) Good luck!

What about adding fractionated coconut oil?
@HeidiVillegas10 ай бұрын
You could add this ingredient, and many do. It helps with solubility and some believe it helps protect the plastic in the spray part of the bottle from breaking down.

Can I use any liquor? Or just ever clear
@HeidiVillegas9 ай бұрын
Everclear is best, or vodka, because the darker liquors will have a bit of their own. scent. Otherwise...they're fine.

Can a person make the base notes fruity like blood orange and the top notes cedarwood? And how will this effect the scent?
@HeidiVillegas8 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, the top notes are top notes because the odor molecules evaporate more quickly. So orange would not be a base note. You could play around with adding more orange, though, then grounding it with less of the cedarwood---it's an experiment!

Do you recommend using any jojoba oil to help the longevity of the scent? If so, about how much?

I would say try making a solid perfume. Here's a formula you could tweak with this blend: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmnGfaWgoNGrjcU

@@HeidiVillegasI meant it more as a “carrier oil” I’ve read about it on a few sites. Would you recommend using it in a spray or is it something that wouldn’t mix with the alcohol? Sorry I’m new to this.

I used to make roller perfume using fractionated coconut oil.This oil never goes bad, and works great with essential oils.I find that it works better than jojoba oil in my case and is colorless.

What base note would you recommend for a bergamot and juniper fragrance? Or can I just add bergamot and juniper?

Oh, gosh---those two would be so great all on their own, but a fixative (base) would be a good idea. This is a personal decision, but I bet patchouli would be nice, or sandalwood.

Hello! Where did you purchase your Everclear from? Is Perfumers Alcohol just as good? Thank you for the video!

Perfumers alcohol is GREAT! It's just kind of hard to get, so I just go with the Everclear. I have to get mine from friends who live out of state because I can't get it shipped here. Or...I cross state lines into Oregon.

Hi Heidi, I’m feeling a little confused on why I’m sometimes not hearing about DPG being a carrier? Have you ever used it or do you know anything about it? I want to make my son a cologne with essential oils. I have essential oils, rose water, DPG… just wanting to make sure I know that what I have is useful before I start mixing. :)

I need some help... i have some oil musk colognes that i want to turn into a spray. Would everclear work for that too? I never heard if everclear before, when I google it, all I see is bottles of liquor... do I have to buy it from the liquor store? Or what do I need? Any help is appreciated, thanks!
@HeidiVillegas Жыл бұрын
I'm honestly not sure about that? I work with essential oils only, so the perfumery options I'm just not familiar with. Everclear (195 proof) is a good option to perfumer's alcohol, which is just as strong. It all depends on the state you're purchasing alcohol in. Some states sell high proof, and some don't. You can also try ordering it online, too.

May i ask, are there any essential oils out there that will give off a blueberry type scent.

Unfortunately, no. Fruits don't yield volatile aromatic oils, with the exception of the rinds on citrus fruits. Don't I wish, though?

How long does ie last ? :)
@HeidiVillegas11 ай бұрын
It depends on the person's body chemistry, how much is used, etc. But essential oils generally don't last as long as fragrance oils (but you don't want to put that garbage on your skin)

How many ml in total does the spray bottle hold? I'm trying to work out how many drops of essential oils per 100ml of alcohol. If you have a rough guide on drops per 100ml that'd be great, thanks.
@HeidiVillegas Жыл бұрын
Sure! A 5 ml bottle will hold between 80 and 100 drops of essential oil. The reason for the difference in drops is because some essential oil drops are larger than others. So, for 100 ml, you'd be looking at 20 times 80 (on the low side), which is about 1600 drops. Double check my math, though. I did that calculation pretty fast in my head.
@danieltallon85 Жыл бұрын
@@HeidiVillegas thanks for the reply, but I think you misunderstood me. I didn't mean how many drops would it take to fill a 100ml container. I meant if I had 100ml of alcohol as a base, how many drops of essential oils would you add to that 100ml of alcohol to make an aftershave with a good level of fragrance. I know it's probably not an exact science, and a little more or less could be used depending on personal preference to strength, but ball park, how much essential oil is added to the alcohol. I saw how many drops you added in the video, but unless I missed it you didn't say how much alcohol was in the bottle with the drops of oil. Just so I can work out a rough ratio. Thanks.
@HeidiVillegas Жыл бұрын
@@danieltallon85 Gotcha! I would probably go with a 3% dilution at least for a good level of scent. You can also always increase it if you find it's not strong enough. So, for a 3% dilution, 160 drops, approximately is what that would be for 100 ml. Hope that helps! Let me know how your cologne goes! I'm curious now!

Can you substitute Vodka for Everclear?
@HeidiVillegas2 жыл бұрын
Yes, just be sure it's 150 proof or higher. You'll still have to shake it before spraying if it's 150 proof, but the essential oils should mostly disperse just fine.
