I recommend using the wet into dry method to avoid lumps. Pour in the water little by little into the powder while you stir.

Yeah, make a slurry then it will gradually thin out as you add the water. Applies to the kitchen as well, as I make roux and gravy like that too, lol

Can I ask how you measure out the 5 grams of pigment powder? Do you use a digital food scale to weigh or a measuring spoon? If a measuring spoon which increment is 5 grams? Would it be one quarter (¹/4 teaspoon)? Do you ship to the USA on Etsy? I would love to try your paints. They look gorgeous. Also when you go to refill the pans for the second time after they had time to cure and dry do you have to make a whole new batch again for the second pour? Thanks for your help.
@crafterine
@crafterine 3 жыл бұрын
I get small mini sachets of mica powder, each of 5g. You can use those tiny and precise weighing scale for smaller quantities too. I haven't really done a teaspoon measurement since each pigment has a different density :). Thank you so much for checking out my shop. At the moment, I ship only within Europe, but worldwide shipping is in my to-do list :). While filling in for the next layer, sometimes I use the Pigment that I have leftover, for earth Pigments, I would mull them fresh again for topping the pans ☺️. I hope this helps

@crafterine
@crafterine 9 ай бұрын
Unfortunately granulation doesn’t work this way. Mulling helps break down the pigment and it’s essential to get smooth paint out of it (or the artist who paints with it would find pigment breaking out on the canvas). However, granulation is a property of the pigment itself. Some granulate and some don’t (no matter how long you mull or not mull). I hope it makes sense 😅

Hello! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I just started making my own watercolors, they looked dry (I kept them for 2/3 days to dry, then I put them in a closed glass container). After a while they started to soften again (even the ones I've done about a month ago), as if they had either absorbed moisture or perhaps the innermost layers were oozing. Has it ever happened? Where and how can I store them to keep them dry? Thank you!
@bloodmoonmonsters990
@bloodmoonmonsters990 2 жыл бұрын
The texture and hardness of the paint can depend on the amount of honey (and maybe glycerin. Honey and glycerin tend to attract moister) you put in, if you add honey into the paint (not the honey included in the binder) it tends to stay more wet. For storing I would recommend some type of box with air flow or one that is not completely sealed off

Hello what essential oil do you recommend?

I prefer to use clove oil or thyme essential oil. If you do not like the smell of it, you can use other oils provided they have antibacterial properties. I hope this helps :)

It depends on the amount of paint you're making. For 5g of pigment, I add 2-3 drops. Some paint makers add them straight into the binder too.

That's quite a long wait. It has happened to me with a few pigments. But for mica pigments it should dry in half the time. Maybe try working around the honey being added. You may wanna reduce honey.

I have stored the gum arabic binder for upto 30 days. I'm not sure how long it stays fresh. After 2-3 weeks it does get to a thick consistency though.

How do you know what ratio of pigment/powder to binder you need?
@crafterine
@crafterine 3 жыл бұрын
That's a really good question. If you are starting out , I would suggest to try swatching the paint once you're done with the mulling. When you rub your fingers over the swatch and find small granules , you need to add a bit more binder. I would like to cover this is my next video with Q&A's to show how we get the right ratio with respect to different pigments

Absolutely! At first you may have to swatch after mulling each time and look for granulation. As you get experienced, you would be able to make out just my seeing the consistency of the mulled pigment. It all comes with experimenting and understanding the pigments better. I am hoping to film a video to help you ☺️
