I love this video! Thank you Sintija! 🙏🏼 I feel like I am not there yet to grow the digital platforms income streams yet but I would like to learn more about the structure/managing of margins and trade discounts when overseeing projects. Would love you to expand on this in one of your next videos please 🙏🏼

There's definitely a right time and place for each of these in a designer's career. But at least now you now that these are some of the options and who knows what the future brings for you :) I'll make a note regarding the in-depth video so keep your eyes peeled. Thanks for your continuous support Jo! hope you're doing well!

Im a residential interior designer (with commercial experience) in Canada and the studio I work at, we are the project managers as well! We don’t give our discount to our clients so we make money off the trades discount for sure hehe but we also don’t upcharge the FFE and I know some designers do this

Recently our client said: I wasn’t expected your design fees to be so much but my boss was adamant on his fees and didn’t budge. She was def picking everything and calculating things on her end 😅

Yeah, I think it's either one or the other. You either add a margin of keep the discount. And I think we are absolutely right to do this. It's just how the cookie crumbles 👌 its business at the end of the day, bit a charity shop. 🤷🏼

And yes, agreed. There is a lot of value in sticking to your guns aka design fees. Sets the tone from the start- 'do you respect my time and knowledge or not' kind of thing 👌

@@SpaceForEdit thanks for answering. I am willing to start as a freelance, but considering giving first budget and design proposals for free to get my first clients a bit easier.

Can interior designers make profit on trade discount in commercial? Or does the contractor do most of the buying? I know there is a liability aspect of it as well. I would love to hear your insight on this topic

Yep, that's how most commercial studios make most of their money- through margins. So it would be the added percentage to FF&E and sometimes labour as well if they manage the install process.
