John and Catherine are a husband and wife team from Redding, Connecticut. We grow food and flowers on just under 2 acres of property, but we just bought 40 acres of land and are working on building our small farm from the ground up using reclaimed materials whenever possible.

You could also allow "adopt an alpaca' where people pay X amount monthly toward or for the upkeep of an alpaca, you send them pics of the alpaca they 'adopted' and then depending on the amount they have spent, there would be an option to have the fiber from that alpaca sent to them. If you allow people to have an alpaca experience at your farm, you could include feeding and watching them being sheered as a revenue stream, that way, the 'adoptors' could show pics of them feeding the alpaca, before and after photos of them on sheering day which would complement whatever object they made from the fiber.

That's a great idea! I know zoos do that with animals, we could totally do something like that. Thanks for the super great suggestion!

Very informative, I love the idea of the fiberpool, perfect for people who doesn't know how to process the fiber and doesn't know knitting etc.. I also love the agritourism you mentioned that people come and walk the alpacas that's awesome,I would love doing that and to sell the poop a fertilizer is a great idea too.. About the parties and weddings it might be too stressful for them maybe, the noise the crowd, I heard they are very shy.. The stud services and breeding can be a good investment, but you need a bunch of money cause those stud and show quality alpacas cost thousands of dollars but if you have the money that can be benefitial too.. 😊💗 I love your videos I learn so much thank you!

What I love most about the idea of alpaca farming is that it's cruelty free.. As a vegan is very important for me that they don't get killed and butchered like other poor farm animals.. They don't use Alpacas for their meat in the U. S so if i would breed and sell them I wouldn't have to worry about them getting killed. It's no cruelty in sheering them either I heard some different stories with sheering sheep. Also alpacas are gentle and get along with other pets which is a great plus too, it's a great idea. 💗
@OldReddingFarm
@OldReddingFarm 8 ай бұрын
Yes a big part of why we landed on alpacas when picking a farm animal is because we knew we didn't want any animal that would be used for meat. That was really important to us as well. Sheering them is a little stressful for them but it's important to their health that it gets done so definitely not cruel!

This is not a common use for alpacas they're pickier eaters and prefer grass over brush of any kind. They will not clear cut a brushy area like goats might.

@OldReddingFarm
@OldReddingFarm Жыл бұрын
Hey there! They're not really in need of grooming and typically don't love to get held or snuggled or pet the way some farm animals do. The best thing you can do for them is to spend time out with them not pressuring them to do anything . Easiest way to make contact is to offer them their regular food out of your hands and not reaching out to touch them while they're eating that food. Good luck with them !

Do alpaca females get periods like other mammals do? If so, how do you manage the bleeding?
@JatPhenshllem
@JatPhenshllem 2 жыл бұрын
Uh, only a few species of mammals get periods. Others bleed, but it's not technically periods. Alpacas don't menstruate. Maybe they bleed?

The answer i believe is 'no'. I read it is the mating act that prompts the female to produce an egg. But I've only been researching a few days so definitely not an expert.

The local fiber mill near us purchased our blankets for $35 each which barely covered shearing. I think a better option would be to try to sell finished products. Also check a fiber pool which will usually buy your fiber by the LB I believe www.neafp.com/index.php?dispatch=pages.view&page_id=3

How many do you think you need to make a small living with them? Is that even possible?
@OldReddingFarm
@OldReddingFarm 3 жыл бұрын
I am not sure, if you were saavy enough you could do it with a small-ish number of alpacas maybe ten or so. If you were able to do things like sheering yourself. If you had a nice big set of pastures for them so they ate less hay and more grass. I think it could be done.
