My family ran these years ago and had a lot of calving issues. We went from that to Angus and now to Gelbvieh. Gelbvieh have worked wonders for us, the greatest breed in my opinion.

That is interesting, calving issues are for the most part caused by the following issues. Unregistered bulls or registered bulls with an EPD that show high birth weight calving. Often it is first calf heifers that were bred too soon, or the feeding program. I spoke with the guys that are running Beefmaster in Texas ( I have never bred these ), but I have bred Angus and Brangus for years. Everyone agreed it sounded like it could be a feeding issue. I helped out a couple that was having a lot calving issue with a herd of Angus, and that was from their feeding program. They put out feed tubs during the winter. Often some feed gestating beef cows some cattle feed. The extra protean in the feed causes a higher birth weight in the calf. During the gestation period the feed should be grass & hay only. Then after she calves she can be given feed to get her weight back up and boost milk production. But it sounds like you found a breed that is working well with your operation. I always say, you can put 1000 stock people in a room and get 500 different options on any topic. LOL Thanks Evan, Great comment! ~ Rich

I used some balancer bulls (angus/gelbvieh), and the calves were awesome. Big stout and no calving problems on mature cows. I run black baldy cows with simangus bulls now. The calves wean at almost 600 pounds and bring almost $2/pound.

Really enjoyed these four videos on getting started with cattle! My husband and I successfully raised to veal butcher weight four Holstein bottle calves and a couple jersey crosses on our 2 acres in central New Mexico. Turns out we (and our five little ones) really like having cows! So we are planning out our next steps to expand, possibly via grazing permits with neighbors or the state/fed land management. Beefmasters look amazing and I also like Charolais; we’ve seen other folks who have angus and black white faces in our area. We’ll do auction research to see what is popular here since we’re just starting out. Thanks again for really helpful info!!

I might have to do some more research. I'm curious of how they would fair in Montana. We see mostly Hereford, Seminole, and Angus here.

Tabatha, If they are raising Seminole, and Angus in your area the Beefmaster will do fine. Like I said they are heavy eaters so your want good grazing areas. Hope that helps. ~ Rich

I'm in Texas..breeding Angus. Here's my take on Beefmaster cattle...(Yeah, love them, i'll take fully grown ones 2 years old for $700. a head...ok with that, doable?) ....but they look well over 1,100. lbs...like they are in the 1,500.lb fully grown. Those heavy eaters (if i purchased 650lb Beefmaster breeding calves) will gaze my land hard before they ever get to 1,500. lbs...eat me out of house and home having to purchase extra-extra-extra hay, not to mention winter protein cake-sweet feed treats...long before i ever get to take their calves to the sale barn. I'm scare (financially) of those heavy eaters...need more land!!!...3 to 4 acres/beefmaster cow and 5 acres for 1 beefmaster bull.....on second thought...need 5 acres per cow and 7 per bull. Poor rain seasons.

I can sure understand looking at those cattle in the video, they looked *HUGE*. The ones I have seen that were not maxed out on feed like those, while they are beefy they are not that huge. Guys say they are about the same as Brangus on pasture. They seem to pack on weight pretty fast, which make them really good for stocker growers & finishers. In a cow calf operation the high weaning weight is a plus. The BBU has a E-6 replacement cow ( not as heavy ) that you can breed to your current bull. The high milk production of the breed still gives you higher weaning weight on the calves. That is something that if you wanted to experiment with would be going with one E-6, breed her to your bull and see if it puts more money in your pocket on that calf. Plus you can see how hard that breed is in your grass without breaking the bank. At the same time there is nothing at all wring with Angus as a breed. :-) Rich

@@TennesseeHomestead Interesting. Wondering is there a name to describe the phenomenon...where cattle yield more weight per feed bushel (input amount). Another-words what's the name where some cattle can put on more weight per the same feed allotment. Again if these cattle can add and keep weight-on for the same input feed as an Angus would eat...I'd say this breed would be a great deal and something to look into. Feed sticking power!..sticking to body.

In USDA test at USMARC research center on not only steers but heifers came in 2nd on both in feed efficiency out of 18 breeds tested.

You can kind of see the zebu provenance in the dewlap and in the gait. I don't like the name of the breed, it sounds a tad too utilitarian, the animal may be going for beef, but no need to rub it in! I think they should name these Zexans or something, like a Texan X Zebu. Leave off calling them beef until the day comes. After all, we all love our animals.

Wasn't picking on breeds per say. Just talking about the more popular breeds. I love cattle so, I find all breeds interesting. There is a market out there for the more exotic breeds, but it is more of a niche market than the standard breeds. ( Currently ) It could always change 😃 ~ Rich
