I find it interesting that you mention not needing every power tool to get started. I started with a circular saw, a jigsaw, a drill, and a couple of saw horses and clamps all of which had been given to me over the years. Over the years I added to my power collection by buying used or being given to me. A few years ago, I bought a compressor and brad nailer from Harbor Freight, that's still working fine and for Christmas several years ago, I gifted myself a new table saw. I've been building my tool collection for about 20 years and working on things for my home but only been selling my stuff in the last year. Lol

56yo this year and I've been self employed 35 of those years. I recently retired from my 2nd business of 22 years doing residential tree service. I've been floundering trying to find something to do. This past year i had to remodel my entire living room from the ground up literally! My wife had bought me a table saw and compound miter saw right before starting the project as a Christmas present. I then had to buy a few other things "toys " to aid in the process. I came across these videos by chance and the light came on!!! I made the snow flake 2 days ago out of some scrap i had laying around and everyone loved it. Today I went and bought a brad nailer for $30, 4 pickets and a few other items total cost of around $120 came home and made the hexagon box's. I showed my next-door neighbor my projects and after an hour I had my first 3 orders, which paid for everything I had spent. The nailer is a must have for sure. Anyways I'm all in. I have the tools, i have the motivation, I get to stay independent and most importantly working with my hands. I can get as many pallets as I want being there is a furniture store just a couple blocks away and im also going to talk with the owners about consignment as well. Basically they are paying me to take their trash! Trash to cash 💸 . Many thanks for the inspiration 🙏

About CNC machines. I have a 3D printer which I have learned to run ok. But I can tell you that there is a pretty sharp learning curve. These machines can do really cool stuff, but ONLY if the operator knows how to set it up and get it to do those things. They don't just automatically magically do that. BTW I plan to start with candle holders and coasters. I think I can come up with some really cool stuff with those. I need to work smalls for a while since I don't have a large shop yet, and I don't have a way to haul big projects to farmers markets and so on. I really like the concealment projects too.

Hey great channel and content! I'm using the advice you put out and the ideas, currently made a bunch of the "smalls" and getting ready to work on the gun concealment, also set up what I have to do to ship these out to customers, I'm new to this as well. On that note, it would be great if you did a video of what your process is to ship items out to customers. I think it would be very informative to not only those setting up a business like this but also to your customers on what to expect when ordering a product from you ie... what items ship and what ones do not (size/weight), is shipping tagged on as extra or is it included in sales price, who you use to ship (USPS, UPS,FEDX?) and possibly how much time in transit. Anyway that video would be very interesting for all. Great job on the channel please keep doing what your doing! Love the content! Ben

Had access to a shop since 1969. Working in a cabinet shop by 1974. In & out of shops for years. In all those decades I can’t think of one project shipped outside my zip code. Avoid shipping. If not AVOID USPS! They break the unbreakable. I shipped a stack of guitar tops. They were just mated halves of thin spruce. I put the stack of tops between two thick pieced of plywood, locked them together and padded everything. It couldn’t be damaged if it was run-over by an 18 wheeler. They broke it! Every guitar top was broken!! I believe if you shipped a rock via USPS, and marked it fragile, it would be broken in transit.

@maxwellspeedwell2585 Жыл бұрын
Listen to Matthew! The money is made on the smalls, and duplication. I’ve done a large church & library, law offices, a bank, courtroom, stunning electric, & acoustic guitars, a lot of high-end furniture, and countless kitchens. I made decent money, but do you want to wrestle a 48” pantry, or sell cutting boards? Keep it small, light-weight, and duplicatable. Please stay away from guitars. An old luthier told me I was among the few successful guitar makers because I was making $8/hr. In contrast I made an entry bench. It just took minutes, and thirty years ago I sold it for $30. Today it may go for $95.

IMO there's three problems with using a CNC router and/or laser engraver. 1. It leads to repetitive factory style products. Not craftsmanship. 2. It's too easy. So everyone can do it. It'll never be interesting or profitable. 3. It'll stifle imagination
@reyrainer63322 жыл бұрын
I'm curious about your opinion. To me, CNC and all the automated laser carving, etc. are not really wood working. If a machine is doing all the work, that might be profitable, but it's neither hand made nor really woodworking. I'm a raw beginner, and continue to fail at even simple stuff (sometimes), but I'm going to keep moving. The automated stuff is both out of reach and out of interest.
