This video introduces you to a small hack which can be used to restore the efficiency of a shell and tube #FreshWaterGenerator, if it has detiorated due to evaporator scaling.

The best part about your videos is that you help us with the basic hacks that are practical and not entirely theoretical. I have attended your ME class and (indeed) it is the one that I would actually recommend it to everyone who is working on going to work on ME engines.

While assembly always take care of gasket as it may cause vaccum loss and normally we don't find ready made gasket for the FWG evaporator on board.

Very helpful videos sir.We may very likely use this solution in real life. Sir,i request you to plz make a video on mooring winch and windlass,if possible because when we r 4E and 3E,we dont get sufficient exposure to these machineries,but when we become 2E,we r suddenly expected to repair it in the middle of a breakdown at a crucial time. And thank you for making these fantastic videos for young engineers like me.

Thank you sir 🙏. Your lectures are very helpful as a future 4th engineer. While I was on ship as TME I observed my FWG capacity is 15T/day but it generated nearly 20T/day, which I don't understand how it can generate more than rated capacity! Please guide through this sir
@rmetcvideos
@rmetcvideos 3 жыл бұрын
The capacity is basis the anticipated Sea water temp and Jacket water temp and flow rate.It is quite normal for FWG to produce more. But you need to be careful and check if you are operating with additional flow of jacket water at higher temp or Throttled Feed Water, because it can cause enhanced scaling and quickly destroy the capacity .
@m.muthujaya8482
@m.muthujaya8482 3 жыл бұрын
Cause when we sailed cold country area the sea water temperature is too low ,, for that condition you condensation rate high.

I probably feel that people scale the fresh water generator because they run it at 100 percent capacity and 100 percent vacuum. Even 80 % of th ecapacity is sufficient and no cleaning would be required for at least 4-5 months. Run the FWG at 90% vacuum and at around 45 degrees shell temperature, you are good to go.

This video is nice sir, the same thing we have done once in my last ship. But the problem is every time opening and cleaning like this is a difficult task. Is there any way to estimate the amount of chemical required to clean a particular quantity of scale? Because We use maximum 5-6 Kg of saf acid powder everytime without estimating scale deposit. This rough estimation will not yield result. In one ship a chief engineer used almost 25kg of saf acid and made a chemical bath in FWG upto Vent valve where the result is 100% production. But at the same time usage of too much concentrate chemicals affect FWG materials. In your experience other than this method have roughly estimated amount of chemical sir? IF so please make a video on it.
@rmetcvideos
@rmetcvideos 3 жыл бұрын
There is no rule. I personally always felt that, a minimum maintenance with SAF acid followed by mechanical drilling worked just fine.Cleaning with SAF acid at very frequent intervals has it own disadvantages..cost- manpower and management of the chemical etc etc. Drilling is a 2~3 day process but effective and better than 20 times of SAF acid cleaning and the headache of disposal of the chemical water .

Sir, in my last ship, I have a plate type FWG and its Evaporator or Heater was getting scaling every month due to operating at higher temperature i.e around 52°C, so I made a thumb rule for it to run it always below 50°C, and due to this the Evaporator or Heater was working for a longer time. But when my Evaporator was starting scaling, I gets it information by looking at the Shell Temp which was going low and low. And when I see that even after giving full pressure of Jacket Water, the shell temp. is not increasing, then I comes to a final conclusion that the plates got the scale, after that I was opening the Evaporator or Heater plates and we were starting the cleaning process. My question is that in Tube and Shell type of FWG, does Shell temp. increases when its evaporator gets scale formation. Thankyou Sir.

Sir but for plate type, is there any other way which might be as effective as saf acid for removing thick layers of scale on the plate ?

You should use ONLY concrete bits..you can order in stores....Or but from hardware stores when you go on shore leave..If you use Regular drill bit, you will surely damage the tubes

when theship is light, the total head of pump increases and Capacity reduces.So the water flow through various devices reduce.This must be the reason apart from the complex Fluid Dynamics

Sir , I have a question, how is the distillate pump is taking suction from vacuum? Is the space where vapor condenses to water and goes to suction of pump is not under vacuum , or the vacuum breaks in that space where vapor condenses to water?
@rmetcvideos

The whole suction part of the distaillate pump which includes the FWG Casing is under vacuum , When evertthing is under vaccuum..it does not matter. The orblem will come only if air can ingress through the gland packing etc
