This is not "traditional" Native American food. This is what Natives created when the U.S. government kicked them off of their land, put them on reservations, and gave them USDA commodity items such as sugar, oil, lard, and white flour. I would not even call those items "food". They would be more accurately called "empty calories". At that time, they did the best with what was given to them just so they could survive. Not trying to create controversy here. I'm just stating facts. I just don't think it's accurate to call it "traditional" because there is nothing traditional about it. It's as "traditional" to Native American culture as the Bible is.

I've always wanted to try frying things on my stove but it seems so.. intimidating. Could you do a basic how-to on shallow-frying? How to know if the oil is hot enough, what to do with the oil after, etc?
@christinafidance340 Жыл бұрын
I was always intimidated by it too, but if you have a thermometer, just heat the oil on high until it is about 375. (I actually just flick a few drops of tap water in it to see how hot it is, lol.) 😂 The biggest mistake is not getting the oil hot enough first. So, just put it on high and wait about 10-15 minutes and you’re good. Just start with non-meat things so you don’t need to worry about it being cooked all the way (or wasting anything expensive). I’d say things like pastries and fry bread is a great place to start as you get the hang of it. It’s actually VERY easy and I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised- I know I was! And you’ll be making delicious things in no time!
@inthekitchenwithmatt Жыл бұрын
Hi! Sorry, I have been on vacation and am still currently on a cruise haha. Shallow frying is actually a little easier than deep frying. With deep frying always use a thermometer so the oil heats to the exact them that you want. With shallow frying, Medium-Heat is usually a good heat to use. If you use gas the pan heats up much quicker like 30 seconds to 1 minute, if using an electric burner, it will take a few minutes longer. It will kind of glisten when it is ready. If you flick a little water on it it will sizzle. I let the pan completely cool, then soak up the grease with a paper towel and throw it away. If I want to save it, like bacon grease, I will pour it into a mason jar and store it for later use in the cupboard. If you are deep frying you can let the oil cool down and then pour it through a strainer back into a container, and resuse it. Just use it for the same kind of food, like don't make fried chicken, and reuse that oil for donuts or fritters, etc.
@samb76527 ай бұрын
One old cowboy trick is to throw 2 or 3 popcorn kernels in the oil while heating up and when they pop your ready to fry... don't turn down the heat as each frying item will be taking heat out of the oil... happy trails!

Frybread is moist and consistent with bread, you have just made a cardboard cracker.

There are many fry breads out there. I live next to an Indian reservation, I know what fry bread is. It is not moist by itself. It is deep fried exactly like I showed. It becomes soft depending on what toppings you put on it. Besides that, just like most fried things, if you want it softer don't fry it as long!
