In this video I show how I make my own oil paints by hand using a muller and powdered pigment. The medium I used in this video to make my paint is walnut oil.
What you will need:
Powdered pigment
Oil medium
Glass muller
Palette knife
Glass plate
Empty paint tube
Plastic gloves
Face mask to avoid breathing in powdered fumes
I hope you found this video helpful. Please comment with any questions.
Please subscribe to my channel for more oil painting technique videos and free lessons. Thank so much for your support!

Ok I made my first paint with cold pressed linseed oil, bees wax and pigment. It seemed to turn out ok. I didn't like using the tube though. It was a pain. Not sure if I'll use them again. Maybe a dark jar. Any thoughts on that?

Hello~ Miguel Bevia. I am ARTOY 😊 Through this drawing, I was able to access your KZbin channel and watch more drawing. Your work is unique, and the soft and intense image has been a great impression on me. Although I live in a different country from you, I was very happy to have access to the history and culture of different countries through you. I hope to see more works by great artists like you. If your country also has a community site where you can see drawing of other artists, can you teach me that site? I hope to learn more about culture and art through the site and promote my paintings so that more people can share cultural exchanges. 😊 😊

Great video! I'm making my own oil paint also, and it's endlessly fascinating. By the way, you're pronouncing 'muller' like Americans pronounce the German name 'Mueller/Müller' (i.e., MULE-er/MYOOL-er). It's actually pronounced 'MULL-er'. This tool's name is related to the verb 'mull', as in to mull something over (in one's mind).

This is a great tutorial Miguel, very clear and easy to follow! I used to make oil paints with fluorescent and phosphorescent pigments because I could now find ultra-violet oil paints any where, I used to add parafin wax and heat it up in a double boiler with some turpentine, linseed oil and a small bit of dammar varnish. Your way is very interesting, seemes much more easy to do, how do you find it in comparison to store bought oil paints? What is the drying time like? Happy to have subscribed! I love these kind of educational videos. -Harriet ✨💗

Without adding something like an encaustic medium the oil and paint will eventually separate. I did an experiment a while back a mixed pigment with Walnut oil, water soluble linseed oil, linseed oil and linseed/encaustic mixture. After 6 months of sitting in a drawer, the Walnut oil paint completely separated, the linseed oil paint was moderately separated, not nearly as bad as the walnut oil. The water soluble (Holbein) linseed oil held together surprisingly well, but separated as much as the regular linseed oil. The linseed oil with 3 percent encaustic wax did not separate at all. I tested each with a handful of pigments, mostly ochres, lapis and vivianite. This is obviously not much of an issue if you go through paint really fast, but it you mix rare/expensive pigments that sit in the drawer, I strongly suggest using a binder.
