BTW, brown rice can vary extremely widely. Recommended you play around with it, but I'd start with 1.5-1.75 cups of water per cup of brown rice, as brown rice needs more water to cook properly.

Soooo entertaining however, DO NOT remove the lid after you've cooked the rice instead remove the rice from the heat and let it rest, with the lid on for 10-15 minutes. Voilà perfect rice 😁👍

I don't have a rice cooker and don't think I ever will as I do ok on stove top just by adding a pat of butter or drop of oil to the pot (are you wincing at that idea? ) however, I have a friend that puts a splash of vinegar in her rice and to my surprise it's really good. Rice is a hateful thing to cook and that's why there will always be instant rice for some 😨
@TipsyWok6 жыл бұрын
Brenda Strand Rigdon it can definitely be frustrating, Brenda. When I was growing up I was learning how to make rice but it was never in a terribly productive way, just "no this is terrible" when I would add too much or too little water. I've never heard of butter or oil in it, I never thought it needed it because all rice really needs to cook is water and maybe a little bit of salt. Vinegar is interesting. Sushi rice is made by mixing in rice vinegar, and sometimes I add a little into a finished bowl of white rice. Not bad!

When I do it on the stove it burns, coz I suck and have the attention span of a gnat. I do it in the microwave and it comes out nice and fluffy. 2 cups of water, 1 cups of rice. Around 15 minutes in the microwave. Fluffy rice.
@TipsyWok6 жыл бұрын
INTERESTING. I've never actually heard of cooking it in the microwave. And I was practically born eating this stuff. I might have to try this out...

Method for perfect Jasmine rice, which isn't supposed to be fluffy. 1. Wash/rinse a measure of rice. No need for the strainer, just gently tip the pan and let the water drain out. A small anmount will remain. 2. Add the same measure of water. If one cup of rice, one cup of water and so on. 3. Bring up to the boil, no need to stir unless the non stick has failed on your pan. 4. Put on the lowest heat of your stove and leave for 14 minutes. Don't take off the lid. If you forget and leave it on longer it will still be OK and on a low heat takes almost forever to burn. This method world every time with Jasmine rice unless it's newly harvested so avoid this. Older rice tastes and cooks better. Different rice varieties, like Basmati, need completely different techniques. Adding salt is personal preference, I do or don't dependent on what I serve it with. While it's ready to eat at 14 minutes it gets better as it sits. For pretty much everything I cook I make the rice first and then move the pan onto a heatproof mat. It stays hot for ages and easily over an hour if drape a towel over it. Washing varieties or rice like this doesn't remove excess starch, it removes all the rice powder produced as grains rub against each other in transit. It's also to actually wash it to remove all kinds of stuff, rice harvesting, drying and milling is not a sanitary process. As a guide, most rice should be washed, the exception is US produced rice that has a sprayed on coating to fortify its nutritional value, If you wash it, the coating gets removed. All other commercially produced rice has imitation rice grains that achieve the same thing. Being solid as opposed to a thin coating they're not affected by washing.
