I made this today! My nephew drove up to spend time with us, and we decided to make pita breads. This is the recipe upon which I decided. It was great fun watching them blow up like balloons so quickly. I've made pitas before, but the trick to use a preheated griddle/pan/etc. in the oven did the trick! I have 8 pitas now waiting to be eaten.

Pita is the biggest difference from shop-bought of any bread I’ve made and I’m certainly no expert. It’s like magic when the little pockets form,no worrying about poking you knife through the side trying pry it apart. So worth it to try if you haven’t before

I happen to be lucky enough to live within walking distance of a Lebanese grocery store where they make pita 5 days a week. You can smell it a good block away. So, while I do know how to make pita and have made good pita, I'm happy to support a neighborhood business for pita. 🙂

In Bulgaria we spread some butter with garlic in it on the hot pita bread and we eat it with the main course. Some people also like sprinkling some cheese on top of the pita bread while is is still hot so that it melts. So delicious 😀

One thing I'm confused by: your question about "what you use pita for." It immediately goes into the tummy. You can't use it for anything after that. You might also want to let people know that once baked, the pita will last about 15-30 minutes. Or less, depending on how many people are in your house. After that it will be gone.

I just finished making these and they are hot out of the oven. I will be eating these tonight with homemade Hummus. I have been baking bread for 30 years and have made many pita recipes, but these, by far, turned out the best of any pita I have made. Thanks for the recipe, John. Btw, I followed the recipe as written using a baking stone.

I will make this for sure. I especially love pita bread that I can open and fill and some of what I find will not slit open without breaking. I will add onion powder and as I fill these I often will use homemade hummus, I cook my own dried beans, and or I might make a breakfast sandwich with eggs and bacon or fill with tuna salad. Thank you so much. I love your channel. :-)

While Pita is a very old bread, the oldest known bread is actually a flatbread found in the Syrian Desert that dates back 14,000 years: Pita is around 4000 years old, it means "flat bread" which the ancient Greeks were the first people to use that term. other: bread from Çatalhöyük, discovered in a Neolithic settlement in central Anatolia, Turkey and dates back to 6600 BCE. Bread from Shubayqa 1, Bread crumbs found in sediment samples at this site in Jordan are about 14,400 years old. Gr8! Peace ☮💜Love

I made these today but mine didn’t puff up very much at all. They just kind of “bubbled” and I’m wondering what I might have done wrong. I used about 100g of whole wheat flour and 200g regular flour but I noticed several other recipes also used some wheat flour so I don’t think that was the problem. Would appreciate any answers or comments. Thank you!

Oh, John...you're so silly! You should know that kneading dough by hand is therapeutic to the soul! Your pita recipe is slightly different than mine (mine fails occasionally, and I haven't been able to determine why), so I'm looking forward to making your version. How do I use pita? For lots of sandwiches, but my favourite is thinly sliced turkey, alfalfa sprouts, mayonnaise and cranberry sauce perked up with a little horseradish.
