Hi, John. So, my imagination on one sleepless night created a potato-based superhero/villain. He has an Iceman-like control over all things potato: he can grow them super fast from the soil and, for example, create entire tsunamis of mashed potato. Or, sling thousands of hard, hot potatoes that (for some reason) explode, at his enemies. And so on. I call him The Potator.

Not sure what emoji is supposed to be for "hugs" since the facebook "care" emoji doesn't appear to be available here (and really, why would it be?) so just pretend I found one and know that I felt like maybe you needed one. I know I wouldn't say "no" to a hug right now.
@gnarthdarkanen7464

@@rmdodsonbills To file under "observations" apparently it's not exactly a unilateral acceptance among commenters on YT... BUT a fair chunk use one of the colored heart emojies (like 💜 or 💚) and a fair chunk seem to use the "hugging face" one... (like 🤗) Since you said you wouldn't say no to a hug just now, I've included such emojies JUST in case you might need to copy-paste as I only have access to them for a browser-extention that works with Chrome/ish browsers... SO compatibility and experience might be different... Now you should be able to copy and paste them even if you don't have your own... I think. It worked the last time I tried, anyway. SO hope it helps, and hope you feel better, too. AND at least with this thread on-screen, you can give out hugs to anyone and everyone around... all you like. ;o)

To offer dread-filled John some hope - med school taught me from the lens that it is we who govern the microbes within us with our dietary decisions more than it is that the microbes themselves are governing our dietary decisions. Supporting this notion, microbe composition changes quite readily in response to changes in diet - it is not permanent. For instance, if an individual starts eating a more balanced diet as opposed to their previous more refined-carb-filled one, their gut microbiome composition will shift to include more fiber-degrading bacteria, and others.
@SupahTrunks7
@SupahTrunks7 2 жыл бұрын
I assume that has some relation to why vegans/vegetarians will often have bad reactions to eating meat after they've been vegan/vegetarian for a while? Since cutting meat out of their diet has resulted in not having much gut bacteria specialized in breaking down those protiens anymore?

This video came at a wonderful time, but it did actually make me step back for a second and go 'wait, WHAT day is it??' as the past few years have made time such a squishy, arbitrary concept that an unexpected vlogbrothers video was enough for me to forget my own reality--at least for half a second. This was really good John. I like it when you share your crazier thoughts. You’re getting really good at it. To me it feels like this video is a bit of turning point. It felt like you’re on a new playing field in this video. Good shit man.

"...because we're making potatoes, not a rocketship." Possibly THE best line and most succinct wisdom in the whole video. It's my whole attitude toward cooking nearly anything. Thanks, John for making one cooking video for YT and including this very VERY sage advice that SO many professional chefs neglect so horribly. AND for a few minutes your potatoes decreased the over-all sense of dread in my life... even if mine came out in half-inch cubes that I promptly stir-fried and poured chopped onions and beaten eggs over... and then dressed with red and black pepper a liberal helping of salt and a splash of ketchup before eating. ;o)

Less than 24 hours til the start of stream! Also John fighting dread with potatoes is a good reminder: if you also need some potatoes for this weekend or just for later today, please consume potatoes! If you're hoping to join us for part of the stream, make sure you've got snacks, hydration, and all of the other good self care things ready to go. If you're just doing you today, please also take care! Food, hydration, meds, movement, something necessary and something fun are all good options. If you are weary, rest. See you in comments and the chat! DFTBA!

I absolutely love these. I will be getting the digital bundle perk again this year. I love to cook for the experience of both creating and then experiencing the textures and flavors. It's also a nice thing to enjoy as I have myself and my family to nourish so it's nice to be able to do something I enjoy while also feeding my kids. I often think about how my gut might be why I made bread this morning rather than my brain. Either way, we had some absolutely delicious toast and eggs.

I have been to both Idaho and Nebraska with my husband, who is a truck driver, to pick up various products, such as potatoes. Interestingly enough, we picked up dehydrated potatoes and the guy who worked there referred to it as potato jerky and I will never call dehydrated potatoes as anything but potato jerky in common conversation beyond this explanation again. Also, if you go through Nebraska there is the Great Platte River Road Archway which is a monument over I-80 near Kearney, NE. They built it offsite and had to wheel it into position, which I find to be quite interesting given its size. Would I have ever known that if I hadn't gone to Nebraska? No. So, props to Nebraska for putting a tourist attraction about their state right over the state's largest interstate so absolutely no one can miss it if they are just using the state a thruway to some other destination.
