I’ve been making red beans in sauce for years but I make it very different than you do. I always sauté chopped onions and garlic in olive oil with a little salt, then I add the canned red beans the entire can, tomato sauce, adobo, sazon, cumin, oregano, homemade sofrito, cilantro and black pepper. Sometimes I’ll add potatoes, green peppers, and olives or corn. This is the way I was taught, but it goes to show that this dish can be made in different ways.

I'm P.R. and this is almost exactly how I make mine however, when I told my sisters I use canned beans, they clutched their pearls and informed me that I should be using fresh beans instead. They're right of course but because it's just two of us, I continue to use canned. Still, I always look forward to their versions with fresh beans soaked overnight. I too always add cilantro, it gives it an authentic Latin flavor.

I love the many ways to cook this ,i'm half Puerto Rican and half Italian and love all foods in both, but its so funny how Italians have a dish pasta and beans called Pasta Fazool, and every family makes it different, my mom didn't like the exact Italian version so she Puertoricanized it and till this day my whole family loves my moms version. the odd thing is my dad was Italian so the old ladies taught her many Italian dishes and style of cooking ,which she rocked better then any Italian chef, BUT!, she couldn't cook Puerto Rican food to save her life. Both of her parents were so Puerto Rican from Myaguez and didn't speak English, but grandma TiTi, made me and all my siblings and cousins LOVE PR Food. a favorite is Pasteles and have never tasted any as good as my Abuela! and all the many foods she taught everyone of her Granchildren to love. Enough about me ,I like your simple recipe and the fact that you show an option of draining the beans but adding back the flavor through water and the bullion, good tip. Gonna try your Recipe. Thank you and keep cooking girl.
