Hey as an about-to-graduate-university bookbinder thought id comment a few tips for new bookbinders or people just making this piece for a one off time. Hope this is okay for me to comment, if not lemme know and I'll delete this! - a butter knife can work really well as an easy access bone folder replacement - pva glue works well (and as mentioned in the video most of bookbinding is just gluing : D) but watering it down a little allows you more chance to move stuff and ensure everythings lined up - though be careful not to dilute it too much - bulldog clips to keep signatures together can be a lifesaver - when using blank pages make sure to mark which side is which, cause you dont want to accidently spin them round - if you can wax your thread its defo worth it, makes the thread tangle less and be a bit stronger - depending on what you're making it with, if you can keep the covers pressed while drying that can help prevent it from warping - liquid gold leaf would be my recommendation for adding basic decoration if its not a super duper fancy project 👀 Real talk though this is so amazing and the design is really really beautiful!!! I've been looking to make my own personal version of this book and can I say the homemade gems are so good and I may have to use that technique in the future!
@rayofsunshine69733 жыл бұрын
hey, what type of thread should you use for this? (also thanks for the tips ^-^)
@cal92753 жыл бұрын
@@rayofsunshine6973 I usually go for using linen thread waxed with beeswax for general bookbinding stuff like this (but using cotton, polyester, etc. will work as well), the one thing to make sure is that it won’t break - doubling up the thread can help with this if it's thinner stuff that you have. You can also buy pre-waxed thread made for this kinda stuff as well which isn't too pricey and works well. And no worries, hope they help! : D
@rayofsunshine69733 жыл бұрын
@@cal9275 thank you so much! :)
@JessLess3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much this was a lot of great tips! I’ve never heard of liquid gold leaf before so I’m definitely going to be giving that a try. And the wax thread I totally forgot to mention. I didn’t have enough for the whole book so I just used regular thread for this one which worked alright. But for my most recent projects I’v run it a lot of trouble with the regular thread.
@cal92753 жыл бұрын
Honestly liquid gold leaf can be a lifesaver saver for small projects, I'd defo recommend it - but test it first cause if you use it on book cloth it can bleed a bit... And i think it took me like a solid month of bookbinding before I even realised waxed thread was an option lol

Don't sell yourself short. You're up there with Nerdforge's bookbinding tuts and SeaLemon's work. This is very cool and you've added a LOT of detail. If your prof wasn't impressed, he's an idiot. I do have one hint for the next project with leather. Aleene's (The same company that makes the standard tacky glue) also makes a leather glue. It holds EXTREMELY well. I've used it on scrapbooks. Ngl, this is the video that made me find your channel. I'm so glad that my tired eyes decided to click on it at like, 1 am lol. In all seriousness, this really got me interested in making books. As a lowkey writer, (not a good one, in fact, the only ones my friends that I show like are fanfics lol XD) but it'd be cool to be able to make a book with my own writing in it or whatever. But I also now would love to see yours or my take on Dreams prison books or the og L'manberg Declaration of Independence. What really got me interested was once you did Karl's. As a cosplayer who really doesn't have many cool props or whatever, this would be a nice way to show that I do have some level of skill lol. In all seriousness, this looks like a really pog hobby that isn't so tedious or seen as too lazy. I have a bunch of hobbies but this would really give me a chance to do something different. You're extremely underrated and bookbinding is pogchamp! Lol sorry for wasting your time.

Notice how she used a different Fallen Down song. She doesn’t want people to cry! How nice!
