How to make semihydro moss poles using plastic Gutter Guards

Easiest way to make STACKING hydroponic safe moss poles with used potting materials and moss. Gutter Guards are used in this application. I even snip the lower portion of the guards to place the roots directly in to the lower leca portion and use $1 store hair clips to mount the stems on them. When I lift the poles the whole plant comes up with them 👍

Great idea! But shame in my country we don't have this exact gutter guards, more like flat mesh panels.

These are some seriously massive poles. I've reused them in different configurations. Honestly I feel these are kinda overkill, but they do buy you another few days between waterings

Wow, this is so brilliant. It should get much more attention! It solves the biggest problem with moss polls, how to keep them damp with minimal effort. Can you tell me please how thick the wick you are using is? It looks quite thick 10mm? Thanks so much for this idea! Subscribed.

This was 1/4 cotton wick. I'd say the thicker the better

@@donoboyer4704 Thanks a lot. I found some 8mm (apx 1/3 inch) that I'm going to try. I've done some further research and some say with similar methods they've gotten mold. Others say they can control it with peroxide if I recall. In any case I'm going to give it a try. Thanks again.

Very helpful video! What leca and sphagnum moss brands do you purchase? I'm overwhelmed with all the different options.

Hi thank you! I usually use the sphagnum moss from New Zealand and any leca brand works fine. I get the 50 liter hydroton mostly. It's the oldest brand and I've used it for hydroponics for a decade so it's a great one.

They are called Gutter Guards on Amazon. You could still use this technique with the standard chicken fence plastic. You would just have to cut it's length first and ziptie afterwards.

I am familiar with the Sydney Plants Guy popularised DIY PVC coated wiremesh moss poles, but they doesn’t stay moist for longer than a day in the dry arid climate (West Asia) that I’m in. So I’ve been searching for partially covered grow vertical solutions and KZbin suggested your content.
