Vaseline also works... but very moderately. Some have use cooking oil, coconut oil, cooking spray. Just have to watch quantity. Can use these on resin too. Sanding and buffing may be needed for streaks but I haven’t had issues on most releases... as long as the mix is well done and cure time is long enough.
@butterflyforeve4 жыл бұрын
You can also dust the outside of the mould with some corn starch to make them a little less grabby or tacking
@darciefromnv2md4 жыл бұрын
Desire Love that’s a great idea ... never thought of that. Does the starch embed into the mold? I guess it doesn’t matter for this purpose.

I would recommend Black Diamond for all your resin Dye needs, they have some amazing colors and it keeps your resin smooth and liquidy. If you pour very slow, it will reach the bottom, be sure to squeeze down on the tube mold, like getting the rest of the tooth paste out, to work it into those small tight spots. Best of luck and have fun casting.

One thing you always want to do is cut a zig-zag line for your mold releases so it seals it up well, doesn't leave an undesired edge. Release spray is great.

(10:35) - No, just make a small hole at bottom, so when you fill up mold, no bubble of air gets trapped at bottom. When you see resin coming out of bottom, rest mold on a flat surface which will effectively plug the hole. Must be many different ways of doing this bit. When you turn out your finished piece, it's really easy just to cut off and/or file excess. >

Well done, Sarah. I recently had a disappointing experience with the Smooth-On 25 though, and I feel it needs mentioning so that others can be aware of it. Smooth-On says on the jar that it has a limited shelf life, but I'd bought it less than a year before I used it, and had never had resin expire before, so I didn't investigate further. Then when I went to cast something, Part A had gone solid like old chedder cheese! Green cheese. So I went on their website and found that the Lot # on the bottom left of the label showed this had expired three years before I bought it! The first two numbers are the expiration year, the second two the month, and who knows the last three. So while it looks like a decent product, just check those lot numbers first!

Hi Sarah, I just watched your very first silicone mold making and using those molds to make a stamp handle and pen body. It was fun to watch you discover how to do these and you were commenting on how the silicone picks up hairs and dirt. I had one of the silicone rollers that picks up hair from fabric and you cleaned them by putting dish soap on and running water over them as you rubbed the dish soap, and the hairs slid right off leaving a clean roller all ready to use again, so I’m sure you can clean New outsides of your molds the same way! If you put a hole at the bottom of the mold, you won’t have the problem of it being stick in there. You can tape or glue it before the pour and when you’re demolding, you can remove the tape or glue and it’ll have a place to suck air in as you remove your casting.

A note, since you were cutting the silicone mold for the handle anyway, you could have taken a knife and sliced into it thru the plastic to get it started and then finished slicing the silicone once it was off. :) Also a note on the pen, if you use a skewer to poke in the mold, only fill it a little ways and poke, then maybe fill a little more and poke again so you don't have to poke all the way down thru a full mold. Also, yes, there is mold release spray as mentioned already. :)

You can use petroleum jelly and put on the item before demolding so doesnt stick to mold...and Silicone &caulk gun you can make molds and also using a Hot glue gun too * NOT SURE HOW MANY TIMES U CAN USE THE SAME MOLDS AS IM NEW TO THIS ALSO* BUT IN A PINCH YOU CAN USE SILICONE "FOR TUBS, WINDOWS ETC KIND" AND HOT GLUE FOR CRAFTS*( if get any holes have to make another but get a rubber/silicone "baking Mat" and use the shiny side and wait for it to dry (both will be a little mushy though, then do a water test with food color to make sure no leaks for when u actually pour the resin into the mold.

How durable is resin? I've been wanting to get into it for a while, but there aren't any strength tests...
@SarahTypes4 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the resin. The resin I use is best for art so it is somewhat durable (meaning if I drop it - it won't smash or crack). But you wouldn't use that specific resin for a floor or table.. you'd want something that cures rock hard. I know there is resin for boats so I imagine that's very durable.

Thanks! the moulds are definitely reusable. I've painted resin when making dice before for the numbers so it can be done. With the dice it's recessed so it's not as easy to scratch. Hello Sarah nice video I have different ideas about mold casting and searching I came up to your video (I was looking for the name of the silicone thanks btw), and I just want to make a positive critique if you don't mind. You putted your pieces the wrong way, the shorter its a clearer example, the thickest part goes in the top because when you try to unmold you have to pass the thickest part through the thinnest making it hard. Try a new mold but this time preparing the pieces upside down
@hectorldr92294 жыл бұрын
And more thing, if you can find the same recipients that you cut then you can cut the mold through the middle and instead of using tape to keep the mold use the recipient.

Hello! Thanks or your response :) I did talk a bit about this at the end. I realized it would have been easier to de mold and make more sense if I had the larger part open. However im glad I did it this way because it would have be more difficult to make the larger end look nice with sanding. The smaller end will be attached to wood so it will be easier for me to sand and you won’t see it. But for other things I’ll definitely be doing it with the large side open :)

Hi Sarah, thanks so much for this tutorial! It was great! I was just thinking maybe about getting the end of the hand stamp out. 1) could you purchase a cheap hand stamp or find an old one at a thrift store and saw off the end. Then make a silicone mold of the handle but make it with the wide end of the handle at the opening of the mold instead of at the bottom...lol...am I making any sense?
@SarahTypes4 жыл бұрын
Yes! I wanted to use these handles because these are the ones I use for my stamps and just didn't have an extra one lying around at the time (that wasn't glued into a wood stamp). Also, yes I could do it bottoms up but I still would prefer it the other way because I'd rather clean up the smaller end.. know what I mean? I think it would be harder to make the larger handle part look nice with that being the open part of the mold. (A lot more sanding)

Hi Sarah, Thanks for your video. I have a little figure i have made out of polymer clay. It has some fine details on it. If i use the silicon do you think it may actually break off the finer details if removing the silicon. I think you can get mould release sprays as well. So i would apply that as well. Your thoughts?

I would apply the release spray because sometimes it can take a little elbow grease to get things out. I've done this with a clay piece and actually coated it in glossy modge podge.. if it's coated in a gloss finish the mould will also have this finish.

@@SarahTypes Interesting thanks for your reply. The piece i have is made out of SCULPEY brand polymer clay and i haven't actually painted the item yet. I thought it may affect the silicon. But your suggestion is possibly paint the piece in a gloss finish? Does this also assist in removing the sculpture from the silicon? Thanks
