Great video and woodworking tips on making the three different style cutting boards. Lots of Western Maple and Alder in my area of the Island, just wonder what your thoughts would be with using those woods for cutting boards. Thanks for the up load.
@knecht1059 жыл бұрын
+Ron C Western Maple is excellent for cutting boards, and Alder works fine too. You probably also have Arbutus around. That stuff is super hard when it dries and will last a couple of life times as a cutting board :)

Nice tutorial. Looking forward to part 2. We all like wood with character but in the case of cutting boards, knots I assume are to be avoided at all cost. Correct?

I am trying to learn how to get the finish I see on antique furniture. It is not the real shiny poly finish, but it feels almost like a waxy finish. My wife loves that finish, and if she is happy, I'm happy.

Great video Colin, I really enjoyed it. I do have a quick question for you what length are they? I am looking at making my first cutting board and using the following pieces of wood American White Oak, North American Tulipwood, Iroko, American Walnut and West African Sapele are these combinations of wood suitable for making a cutting board???? thanks for sharing.

Another excellent video! Thanks you! I've recently had the chance to cut trees and make my own wood on a saw mill. Do you know what are the best way to dry the wood? and what would be a good thickness for drying and using it to make furnitures?
@knecht1059 жыл бұрын
+drkrd Most people air dry the wood between sticks of wood. Make sure you coat with a sealer or you will likely get sever splitting. Often air drying outside under cover will get you down to around 12-14% after a year or so, then you need to bring the wood indoors for another year and that usually will get you down to 9-10% which is where you normally want to be. Depending on the species, I would cut the wood to about 5/4" thick, or even a bit more. That will give you enough room for the wood shrinkage, and final planing to around 3/4"
@drkrd9 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the advice! I will definitely try that. I didn't knew for the sealer, I will look for that.

Can i do a mix of edge wood strips with face grain main portion?
@jeffharmed16169 жыл бұрын
Very informative, thanks Colin. We will forgive you little slip - end grain first. You started correctly way but then went all the way around. In the end there was no tear-out so it's just about brownie points.
@knecht1059 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Harmed Yes, that's what you do, sorry if I wasn't clear on that. When circling a piece, start with end grain, and you will finish on end grain. The real point is that any tear-out at the corners almost always gets over cut when you do the edge grains. Thanks buddy, good nudge to help keep me on track :)

Hello Colin! I have question. Two days ago I made a chestnut cutting disc from a piece of wood. I rubbed it with 80-120-220 sandpaper and a hand sander. olive oil on the finish. after the first wash its texture is like I didn't shave it. is this reasonable?
@R_an_D3 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised your problem was not mentioned in the video and your question was unanswered. After the initial sanding and before applying finish, wet the board down, allow to dry and follow up with fine sandpaper. I do this on all projects, not just on cutting boards.
