How to make small self-watering wick systems for growing peppers

How to make a small self-watering wick systems. In this video I show you how to make tiny self-watering wick systems out of cups and other small items that you would normally discard. These are used to provide a constant food and water for your plants and reduces the need to add nutrients as often. This works on the same principle as the larger earth boxes. For nutrients and strength I used Masterblend at 1.6 g/gal, MgSO4 at .8 g/gal, and Ca(NO3)2 at 1.6 g/gal. This was the strength the plants were in initially so if yours are not adapted to that strength, or are used to more, adjust accordingly.

To make sure the bottom of the "grow pot" does not sit in the water of the reservoir pot, just punch a small "weep" hole in the side of the reservoir at the point just below the bottom of the grow pot. When water is needed, just pour water in the top of the pot and it will drain and fill the reservoir to the level of the drain hole.

Hello. What kind od fertilizer do you use to make hydroponics wicks? Is it for organic fertilizer or mineral fertilizer if peat and coconut are used? because in hydroponics with expanded clay, organic fertilizers should not be used.

Is it necessary to calibrate PH meter every week or month by using PH Buffer solutions?

The Bluelab pH pen that I have requires calibration every 30 days using the 7.0 and 4.0 solutions.

Nice idea Peter. I'm away sometimes for 2-3 days at a time and this method may help. How long can you go before having to top up the nutrients?

Thanks. Some plants can go for over a week, but some others that are growing quickly drink must faster and I'm having to add every 3-4 days. But these are past due to be transplanted and should be in something bigger soon anyway. The larger 5 gallon version should last much longer but I'll probably keep it topped off throughout the summer.

Thanks for asking. That's something I'm still experimenting with. I've had that happen too. Synthetic materials seem to last longer. Cotton based is probably fine for short term use.

I don't know of anything specific to Aji Charapita that's different from growing other peppers. There's a wealth of information on KZbin, and places like Pepper Lovers on Google+, and thehotpepper.com. Harvesting is a tedious process, as the peppers are tiny. You just have to pick them.
