Empty toilet paper rolls :) cut 4 vertical slits on one side and fold them into themselves. Fill with soil and seed. These are great for low-stress transplanting. Great tip on how to make these. Very useful for repurposing used plastic containers.

I think one of the youtubers you saw using those cups is me :) I am glad you like the idea, Elona loved it too. For the drainage holes I use a wood burning tool I bought from Lee Valley many years ago, has different sizes tips also use it to custom make my own orchid pots :)

About five years ago, I bought two sleeves of black plastic 4 oz. soufflé cups on Amazon. There were 250 in a sleeve and I am still using the first sleeve. I have received many plants shipped in the clear ones, but I love the black ones because they keep the roots of my plants in the dark. In the past, I have also used the three oz. plastic bathroom cups with good results, but I like the black soufflé cups better. For rooting cuttings or violet leaves in water, I have some 4 oz. glass jars with plastic lids that I ordered online. I drilled a 1/2 in. hole in the center of each lid. This lets the stem reach down into the water, but holds the leaves up in the air.

I love this! Great tips :) I love saving a little money too :) I might give these a try sometime. I like the idea of using the lid to prop up the cutting.

Good video, and great idea. You are right, often there doesn't seem to be enough space. Subscribed.

I do something VERY similar except I use the full size solo cups. I use a larger cotton twine or about 5 of yours. I tie a knot to anchor it at the bottom and leave about 2inch if slack that I fluff up. Below I use a zigzagging 1inch PVC pipe with holes drilled into it. I stuff the twine into the PVC and use a small water pump to circulate water in the PVC. (Think if it as a hybrid NFT system). The excess water drains back into the water bin with the pump Like a NFT). I have the cups sitting shoulder to shoulder in a box with the piping. I leave the plants in the cup till they grow to full size. The flowing nutrients provide the nutrients (Compost tea brew added every 3 days). The cup is just big enough to fit the full size plant roots. I grow Full size Pac Choy in 1 month doing this. About 15 plants per 2Sq ft. I highly recommend it. If your interested to see my version LMK and I'll send you a pic of it.

I'm using 16 oz solo cups. Would you suggest using more than one wick...maybe 3?

What other wicks would you recommend if not cotton?
@PlantzNThings
@PlantzNThings 7 жыл бұрын
you can use a nylon string.... you need to prime it with soapy water for maybe 20 minutes or so first... I guess it allows the wicking to happen easier.

can you use crochet yarn?
@PlantzNThings
@PlantzNThings 7 жыл бұрын
you can... but keep in mind that when using natural fibers they break down over time... you will likely have to replace the string more often.

TOO MUCH TALKING
@44043495
@44043495 5 жыл бұрын
Instead of talking too much for whole 8 minutes explaining the small red cup, you should at least put some plant soil inside the pot. I was waiting and waiting and then finally you made a hole in the cup and pushed a thread through., 😳😳that’s all !!
