Very useful! I've always just used my CNC for knobs since it was the only way to make them look decent, but it takes so much time to set up that it gets annoying (first world problems, I know). I think I'll be using this technique in the future.

G’day John first off thank you for your very simple description and method of making knobs you make it so clear and so precise I duplicated basically everything you did with the exception I had a pine plank and used that instead of plywood ... this might seem like a crazy thing to say but I think I have more fun making jigs for making things than I do for the actual making of things ... anyway I think you’re awesome keep up the good work, Tim from Australia

Oooh, liking that jig. I need a bunch of knobs and I have a bin of hole saw leftovers that need a purpose. May be easier to start with a fresh block of wood, but this jig is perfectly suited to work with what I have on hand.

Nice jig, John. It happens that I just posted a "how to make knobs" video. I planned to use the 2 hole saws as you did, but leave tbe knobs round, for comfort. In the end, I opted to post a much simpler type, for quick (and cruder) knobs. I like the way your jig produces the tri-lobed shape.

that's pretty neat, wish i had the brains to come with a jig like that when building the pantorouter, which I think I had to make about 15 wooden knobs, all by hand. much fun.

thank you, that is a cool little jig. I do have a question though- if you will put the T-nut on the underside, instead of the top side, won`t it grip and tighten itself when in use? that way, you can also use standard wood glue, and not epoxy on the body of the knob.

I really appreciate your videos. I wish you would show the finished product before you start creating the pieces though. It helps me understand what you're building and why. Thanks for the ideal. I am thinking that I will make the jig just a little bit larger. I will drill out the handle holes by drilling 3 separate ones at 120° apart. And not have to turn the knob and drill
@mantynen804 жыл бұрын
4:19 Idea: If you drill a hole through the drilling plate where the hole saw is working, and that hole overlaps the hole saw the path. This improvement will allow the sawdust to go out immediately, and drilling will be high-speed, and the dust is not clogging the hole saw bit.

I like the simplicity. Pardon my ignorance but the drill bit used on your drill press for making 3/8" holes, is it a Forstner bit or a special type of bit?

Nice jig, but if you make it on a bigger board then you can have three position for the drill and you need not to rotate the knob and push out the rest piece every time.
@IBuildIt7 жыл бұрын
True, but that makes the layout for the jig a bit more tricky.
@emburaman7 жыл бұрын
And usually, it is more likely to find smaller pieces of scrap wood laying around, that would fit this jig project.
@superdau7 жыл бұрын
But you still have to place the drill three times per knob. If you put three blanks around a center hole though you can drill a third of three knobs (which equates to one complete knob on average) with a single push of the drill press. Much more efficient!
@IBuildIt7 жыл бұрын
My original idea was to make a second location on the other side for cutting the knobs with 4 scallops instead of 3, but figured that was not really needed. However, if you are so inclined, that can be taken further with another location for cutting 5 scallops, or even 6 with a smaller hole saw!!! :D
@moninum7 жыл бұрын
You could also use a whole board for cutting a bunch of knobs and lay out the middle points of them in a square pattern if you would like to have 4 scallops or in a hexagonal profile for six more shallow scallops. But then it would be still usefull to have this jig on hand to finish the ones from the edge :) I like your idea a lot!

@CWR0327 жыл бұрын
With some careful planning and measuring, couldn't you cut out a bunch of disks with most of them overlapping and get the same cut piece and reduce plywood waste? You know that's what Matthias would do. Of course you'd still need your jig to finish the cuts on the rest.

i have some of that plywood ,can you explain to me , why there is spots where it is hollow ,i never understood that shit , seems very stupid, i know it annoyed me , cool jig
@adamb26197 жыл бұрын
It is the quality of the veneers that are laid up when making the plywood. Each type of plywood has certain criteria for its application. A high quality cabinet grade birch plywood would be complete overkill for a floor substrate, where plywood used for flooring does not compare to what is needed for cabinets. Its all in the balance of quality/price/usage.
