Something that I’ve noticed about mushroom growing is that the equipment is far less expensive to obtain and easier to use than most weed growing equipment which allows mindful and cautious people to become less conspicuous and more discreet.

P.G.T. gives good instructions here. Especially about sterilizing jars of grain in the pressure canner. I wrote to Presto Appliances, on you tube, and they replied: "Our canners meet both USDA and NCHFP guidelines for safe canning procedures.... (1) Use the amount of water called for in the instructions (3 quarts) if using the canner for no more than 100 minutes. If using the canner for more than 100 minutes increase the water to 4 quarts. (2) When pressure cooking or sterilizing at 15 psi use the pressure regulator, not the dial gauge, as the indicator of pressure. If the pressure regulator is rocking there is 15 pounds of pressure in the canner. Once the regulator is rocking, the heat needs to be reduced so the regulator rocks continuously, but slowly and gently. See video here. From instruction manual Important Safeguards: CAUTION! Do not use on any outdoor LP gas burner or a gas range over 12,000 BTU’s. Using too large of an element or over 12,000 BTU’s may soften the canner causing the bottom to warp. It may also result in property damage and/or personal injury." Do not use this pressure canner for other than intended use.

Good video. I use rye normally but I am going to try oats. Oats are about half the cost of rye grain. I also actually pressure can my grain in my 30 qt pressure canner and keep the sealed jar on the shelf. I do this so that I have sterile grain for grain to grain expansion or to innoculate a single jar from agar plates. The way to prevent contamination when the vacuum is released is to cover the jar with a few layers of a tight weave cotton cloth that has been saturated with 70% rubbing alcohol and open in a still air box. The canning process allows me to sterilize and seal 14 qts at a time. The sealed jars will stay sterile as long as the seals remain intact.

Drying oats is much easier using a hanging herb drying rack. Trust me and save yourselves the hassle of drying oats this way. Also a good way to tell if your oats are dry enough is to load half a jar and put the lid onand swirl your oats around. If you notice oats sticking to the sides or any moisture on the inside of the jar there to wet. You don’t want to smell the wet spot lol. Great videos philly . Keep it up my friend.

I’ve been wondering if it’s possible to sterilize/pasteurize using a solar oven. Would be a cool alternative to my gas burner...

Hi, I’m very new to the world of home mycology. I haven’t tried growing anything myself yet but I plan to in the near future. Your videos are AMAZING and honestly way better than any other home mycology channels I’ve found so far. I was just wondering though... when you make grain jars... is there an advantage to using oats vs brown rice? I noticed you used brown rice in one of your other videos. What other grains can you use and what are the advantages/disadvantages to each one?

You can use popcorn, millet, wild bird seed, brown rice, whole oats, and there's probably more. Popcorn is good because it's less prone to contamination, millet is good because it has more inoculation points, same with wild bird seed cuz thats where millet comes from basically. Brown rice is easy to obtain/make although kind of expensive, whole oats is dirt cheap and highly nutritious for mycelium.
