Personally I think it doesn't need a border, however a small border, say 4 1/2" or 5" in a faded or crackled cream to simulate a wall would look very nice. I'll be excited to see what you decide. I love the attic flowers window especially how you match the lines and the lights in the corners it look real! I think the border has to match the illusion meaning since is spring colors add one ligth color with a 1/2'' wider than the last dark brown border for contrast and add another one 1/2 " wider and darker value and follow the illusion in the same manner for the corners. I know you do it easy at the same time nothing is complicated for you, Thanks Tracy you challenge me with your suggestion about the borders! Brilliant if I may say so!

That is the best attic window I’ve seen. That wood fabric is perfect. I would border it in a wider plank wood fabric cutting it so the grain runs the same way all around. Make it look like it’s actually a window in a rustic home.

What a beautiful quilt. I'm new to quilting but would definitely not be afraid to try this pattern. For the wood strips, would it work if you layed your light and dark strips facing each other and cut one side at a 45 degree angle, then sew them together? That would eliminate the need for a triangle....wouldn't it? As for the border, I would look for a grunge fabric so it looks like faded or aged paint.

The boarder could be any favorite colors like the wall the widow is in. So for me it would be blue or purple as they are my favorites. I might pick a smaller print since those look to be mostly larger ones. Or a solid.

This was so helpful to me for an illusion quilt I once saw and wondered how on earth it was made. A friend had told me years ago all quilts are just a matter of squares combined. I repeat I am not a quilter, I do not wish to grow up to be a quilter. I prefer clothing and accessories. Why is there three quilts on my projects to get made this year list. Sigh. There is clothing on my list starting with a dress form and seam roll. First I must graduate college this spring.

Hey Tracy: Finally got to watch this video. I was wondering while watching if, instead of making a corner HST and trying to match it up with the wood grain on both adjacent sides, could you instead use 14 1/2" long side and bottom wood-looking fabrics strips, and sew the ends together diagonally using an partial seam to achieve that mitered wood intersecting corner look? The seam would have to stop 1/4" from the inside window-corner edge. Trim excess fabric off on back side to make a 1/4" seam allowance. Then, with right sides together, match one of the wooden sides with one of your window square sides. Sew together stopping 1/4" from wood miter seam intersection. Do same on adjacent window side. (Essentially, this would be the Y-seam method.) Does that make any sense??? Each of your 3 intersecting fabric seams would stop short 1/4" from each other, yet still result in creating a finished faux wood mitered corner. Then, trim opposite ends of wooden fabric lengths to align with top and opposing window side edges. It might actually be easier than trying to match up the wood grain using the HST method on each adjacent side. I dunno. In my head, this could work, but in the real world (the one I don't inhabit the majority of the time 🤪), it might not come out right. Just another way to view this situation. Anyway, your videos always challenge me in some way, and that's why I am such a fan of you and your videos - for the creative challenge! 🤔 Helps to clear out the cobwebs, so keep 'em coming!!! 😉 Oh! I was so hung up on the mitered-look corner that I completely spaced about the quilt border question. Oh, well!

Hi Tracy! Thanks for the video. Have made one with people in the windows(memory quilt). I have quilted the seams. But. My windows are 8 inch. And batting recommends 4” between quiltings. How should I quilt the inside of the window.? Feels weird to quilt over peoples faces. The quilt is a 60 yr present, so dont want the batting crumple in the middle over time. I wonder what it would look like with the border on left and white out of the light fabric at bottom of windows and matching cream at top and bottom. Would it give you an illusion of a real window with shutters in the sides? Also, could you just sew together the two strips together the same way you are doing with a square of the dark? Eliminating the extra square to match up?

Do you mix your better fabrics with Joanne’s fabrics? This dilemma has stopped me so many times from making something, I have my better fabrics, such as Moda, Wilmington, Riley Blake, etc.. but won’t have a color to match except some piece I hv from Joanne’s, so I don’t make that project. I guess I need someone to tell me it’s ok to mix and match higher quality fabrics with lesser quality fabrics and that my project will be ok doing so, lol??? And I so love your attic window quilt, it’s beautiful. I like ur idea of using all the floral pieces as binding. I almost don’t think I’d add another border.

ABSOLUTELY I mix my "designer" & "department store" fabrics!!! I do it all the time! I have Moda, Pioneer Woman(walmart) & Joanns all represented in this quilt. I "feel" the fabrics....You will be able to tell the cheap stuff....but honestly everyone has seemed to step up their game with quality. I go with what I like....I don't worry about the brand part of it✅ Hope that helps💛

I knew I couldn’t hv been the only person with is question, I just kept waiting on someone else to ask it, lol. My husband is weeks from retiring, so this helps a lot knowing it’s ok to mix fabrics. I understand what you mean by the feel of fabrics and which are better. I’ve seen the pioneer woman fabrics and I think they’re gorgeous, just haven’t bought them yet, but after seeing your attic window quilt and reading your comment, I will now be getting them. Of course you can! Once it is quilted it will all stay in place. Just make sure you never mix washed & unwashed fabrics in the same quilt.

A border made out of more of the wood look fabrics would be nice. Most attics have unfinished wooden walls. You may want to use brighter wooden print fabric that does not look sun oe weather damaged. Your quilt top is beautiful.

You are right 45° for binding. You could not Attach the 2 angles that way because you would end up with a “y” seam. ( I think that’s the question 🤓)

Did you know about the online fabric sale from a family run business out of Las Vegas? It’s so much fun it’s long you don’t have to stay online for the entirety but they have top quality fabric for quilting. And there’s only so many yards so you have to feed your number quite quickly Tonight is the six dollars a yard night

Instead of cutting off and matching on the dark brown, why not cut both light and dark 13 inches long, place right sides together and miter that corner and stitch and flip up? So the material and coloring would match automatically.

Great question....That would make a "Y" seam which is a struggle for me LOL😂I do best with straight seams✅

PS - only join the strips going the "wrong" direction for binding so that you get a 90'.

Dumb question... why cut the dark strip? Why not just stitch n flip the whole 12.5 in piece? (Fairly new to the game here) may have to go play on the sewing machine... hahaha
