I loved this series but I was hoping you guys would cover how to ACTUALLY do extensive reading. Do we look up words as we go or try to read it straight through and look up stuff later? Should we reread multiple times? Read out loud? Etc. There wasn’t anything on how to actually do extensive reading as opposed to just normal reading. Also there weren’t any activities mentioned for people who aren’t learning with a teacher/tutor. :(

Hi Christina! Thanks for all your lovely and supportive comments on my videos in general! Sorry I'm behind on responses but I read all the comments and I wanted to get back to this one ASAP since you're unhappy here. I'm glad you enjoyed the series but very sorry that you felt it didn't fully cover how to do extensive reading and a wider range of activities. I tried my best to make the series quite comprehensive but it's quite difficult to control exactly how the conversation will play out and what ends up fitting into each episode (since each one of these 4 conversations could have gone on for much longer but I had to try my best to keep them at a reasonable length). I'm happy that you brought this to my attention and I'm thinking that I could review all the content and then make my own sort of "Extensive Reading: An Overview & Conclusion" where I can both try to synthesize everything I knew before and what I learned from my conversations with Jared, and also share my own conclusions after doing the series on how I feel about extensive reading and how I'll be using it going forward. I think that would actually be a really good thing to do! Would that be helpful for you?

I want to thank you Rob for releasing these videos on extensive reading For just over 10 years I have been part time learning Spanish with a very slow but steady pace. For the longest time I was at a simple conversational level at best, however I have been trying the extensive reading method for a week now and the progress has tenfold! I have just woken up from a dream which I had entirely in Spanish, which was so weird to experience but so awesome at the same time. Not sure if my dream counted as part of my dead time study 😅 but I will continue with this method and I will finally be able to expand past Spanish and properly look at other languages I’ve always wanted to get better at like Polish and Korean! Again, thank you for your amazing work Rob, as I said I’ve been learning for over 10 years, though part time, and I couldn’t believe there were so many learning tactics and techniques I’ve never heard of or considered before. Amazing channel 👍

Haha yes @D T, there's a moment in the original recording where I tell Jared, "By the way, it's Friday in all of these videos" and we both chuckled. I'm glad you've been enjoying the series! @Sammy Ytube I'm glad you have found the info to be helpful, too. I'm not exactly sure what tone you intended when you said "What a way to extend content to assure weekly uploads for a month" so please don't take this the wrong way, but just to be clear, I have made 105 videos this year so far and the majority of those were filmed around 5:30am on weekdays so that I could manage to edit and upload them before starting my day job and then hopefully have time after work to keep working on journaly.io desperately trying to get it into public beta testing (hopefully just 1 or 2 weeks away now). Also, many people aren't necessarily going to watch a 1 hour long video on KZbin if it were just one long interview. But yes it is certainly true that part of filming a nice series in this way gave me four weeks where I only had to film 2 videos and was able to have a less frantic Friday morning. I'd certainly like to hope that I've earned that 😊

@@RobinMacPhersonFilms I really enjoyed the fact that this was broken into smaller videos because I think if it was one long interview it would be harder to absorb that amount of information all in one go and then if you want to refer back to a specific part of the interview it is easier to find the section you want to watch again when it's broken up into these specific topics. I really don't mind when people film multiple videos in one sitting and upload them at different times. Filming and editing for KZbin takes a lot longer than many people realize and we all need time management strategies in our lives to maximize the amount we can do in the time available to us.

A book a week seems aggressive of we are talking about 300 + page books. I assume when he says a book a week he means graded readers?

Some graded readers are quite long, too. He also said a chapter a day, and I think it depends on your reading speed/comfort. Jared said 100 words a minute is a good target. A novel is usually 40,000 to 100,000 words. So that would be 400-1,000 minutes or 6.5-16.5 hours of reading. I think he is just suggesting to read daily for a comfortable length of time with "comprehensible input" (i.e. 98% known words). The chunks could be limited by scenes, chapters, books, or just your energy or attention span.

I think it's a really good idea to explain to someone what you read, you're gonna be able to see how many new words you can remember and also apply those to your repertoire to develop speaking fluency, thanks for this video

These videos has been really motivating for me. I almost took a break in spanish because I felt so frustrated with how many words I didn't know. Started learning it almost 4 months ago, I decided I was too harsh on myself so I just decided to start "La casa torcida" from Agatha Christie. I was really surprised when I found out I only looked up 20 words in the first chapter. I'm doing you method where I look up and learn the unknown words first, then hopefully I can extensively read it later on. This was very interesting to listen to.

You two should be language buddies! Here’s something I do with my language partners. If you read something, share a picture with the native speaker and have them read the page for you at a speed you’re comfortable with when listening, that will help you have the correct pronunciation.

I'm almost at 4 months with learning Spanish. I found a nice A1 graded reader bundle pack by Ana Martin on Kindle app store. I read it with Kindle and i highlight conversational phrases and you can even make flashcards in Kindle app. Also, I' ve been watching Dreaming Spanish Superbeginner Videos,. Trying to follow Robin's advice and get in as much input as i can. Keep up the work. Hope this helps:)

@@fromread2read Yes I also read on kindle it's very helpful. I find that A1 stories are too easy/boring to me. Dreaming Spanish superbeginner it's also too easy. I like to challenge myself with proper novels, I hope I won't get burned out
