So cool! I would love to see a video about producing different metal effects for foam armor in particular, since there are so many different metals in games, from rusty iron to polished gold. I'm thinking more about the colors and visual textures than the physical ones that would be obtained through processes like cutting and dremeling the foam. Not full builds, obviously, but demos of sample squares would be awesome to see the actual procedure for. I'm working on some stuff that's well-worn but very well-kept brighter metal, the kind that has obviously seen more than its share of battle but is also owned by the sort of neurotic military man who would sooner die than let it show a spot of rust, move with more than a whisper, or otherwise fall out of condition. I've never really seen something dealing with armor that's been really intentionally well looked after over the years, which would seem to present its own interesting set of detailing quirks in finding that balance between looking good and looking too perfect.

***** Oh yeah, I know mine is bizarrely specific and wasn't suggesting doing that one in particular, just thinking of a basic and very general series on different levels of wear and sheen. So many of the tutorials floating around seem geared toward the rust 'n' dust category, and I feel like there's a big area that often gets overlooked but which can be very difficult to figure out how to approach for beginners. Experimenting is lots of fun, I just love getting to see how others approach things as well. :)

At art college we put a few sheets of wet kitchen roll on our pallets rather than adding loads of water to the paint , this way if you want more water you just press your brush down on the colour you want and it doesn't spill or flood into other colours... it also lasts a lot longer on your pallet before it dries and you don't need to worry about cleaning up when you're done as you just lift off the paper and run the pallet under the tap and you have an immaculate pallet and a nice paint job 🤓 no more scraping dried paint off

I've learned a good way to make eva or other smaller craft foam to get a good crinkled texture of leather is to get a piece of aluminum foil (size depending on the how large your item is), crumble it up into a tight ball, carefully unfold it and take the crumbed sheet and place it over your item and then run a clothes iron over it, then repeat, repeat over the whole item. do that all the time for my ren fest costume

Thanks for this great video... How do these paints stand up to flexing? I've seen a lot of regular paints crack when flexed, twisted. I'm in the process of building some armour to look like bug carapace, so metallic/two-tone effects need to look good, but also be solid enough to be used in LARP battles. Any advice greatly appreciated

What are you doing with the "handles" you attached for painting? Do you just cut them out as closely as you can to where they were glued? It's a really nice trick for spraying pieces, just wondering how you avoid damaging the piece when removing them after spraying.

@punishedprops6 жыл бұрын
Yep! Spray paint does take a while to fully dry and finish degassing though, so it's best to give the sprayed paint time to dry before adding layers on top of it or you could end up with bubbles.

Do you find you get a lot of 'cracked' paint with the pieces of the armor that bend a bit, even when using plastidip? I find whenever I use spray paint for a base colour, no matter how I apply it - very thin coats, thick coats, lots of plastidip, next to no plastidip, there's *always* cracks because the EVA will move while I paint it by and it'll 'crack'. Does it happen to you? If so, how do you fix it if it does? Thank you!
@punishedprops4 жыл бұрын
It does crack a bit, or at least crinkle. A lot of it comes down to how you build your armor. You want to structure it so it has the LEAST amount of flex - it's always a challenge.
