Okay, so after making a few more batches with different results, I determined that it works best if you blend the sodium alginate in the hot water by itself it first and it will dissolve faster and thicken the water immediately. This is the Thick Dye for Dye painting.
This video shows how I make thick water and then at the end how I mix the thick black dye I use for outlining designs.
I start by blending the Sodium Alginate with HOT water ( I now use water that I heat on the stove to about 170F) until it dissolves completely, I will blend for a while, then let it rest and then come back and blend some more. I test it by touch, it should feel smooth between your fingers, any lumps at all mean you should blend some more). Then add the salt and urea and blend until it feels smooth again. Then, I let it cool completely before I add any dye to it as it will thicken more as it cools, once it is cool, then I will test the thickness, and then I add some to a separate cup and add some plain water and blend it, then I put it in a bottle and squirt some on white paper towel to check the thickness/consistency of the thick water... I want it to soak in a bit, but not spread much... you will have to find the thickness you prefer depending on what you are doing with it. If you are painting with it, then thick is good, but if you want to squeeze it out of a bottle, then you will need to thin it down a bit.
Here is the recipe I use and links to where I buy the ingredients :
1/2 gallon of HOT WATER
4 tbsp of SODIUM ALGINATE, 1 lb. High Viscosity for cotton (HV) : www.dharmatrading.com/chemica...
2 cups of UREA ..... www.dharmatrading.com/chemica...
1 cup of Salt, this is what I buy : amzn.to/3t10ec5 ~ I receive credit if you use this link

When I make the thick black dye, I use 6 oz of the thick water and add a heaping tbsp of black dye, so probably 5-6 tsp of dye powder and blend well.

One of the best things I've done is dedicate an old blender for mixing the chemical water. No matter how I tried with other methods I always ended up with the small blobs of sodium alginate. I had an electric whisk I'd use (not like an emersion one like you use here) but it didn't cut it. The first time I used the blender, I think everyone should get a $10.00 walmart blender for this job alone. I was amazed at the smooth consistency of the alginate water in no time at all in the blender. I fought with every other way of mixing it and could never get it. The blender was the tool I personally needed.

this is exactly what I do. I got a $15 blender from walmart, the red one that has the wicked blades in them. I make up my water a gallon at a time and just add more prep chems to the blender and keep pouring it back onto the gallon wide mouth pitcher I use. Then when mixing dyes, I till up to the 24 oz mark with pre chemed, add the dye (2 tsp per 24 oz for most dyes, more for black). I also use Ludigol and Calosene oil, in addition to the chemicals he mentions in this video, but no where near the salt. But I am just starting to thicken, so this video has helped a lot with thicker dyes.

@MrTieDye

I keep mine in a sealed jug and it last for about six months before I have either finished it, or it has a real strong ammonia smell.... then I will pour the rest out and make a new batch ..... as for the dyes..... I like to use mine up within 2 weeks to have bright colors.... after that they start to lose their brightness... green tends to do this the fastest and red will get thick and not be as bright so I only make it when I am going to be using it...... one thing I do if my dyes have been around for 2 weeks is add a bit more powder to each and re blend them

Hi Mr Tie Dye. Thanks for all your videos. I just mixed up this recipe for black. It’s really thick. Can you give me some idea how I can use this thickened water for 8 oz of regular colored dye so it’s less thick. Maybe add a few tablespoons of thick water to plain water and dye powder? I’m looking to modify the solution since I already made it. Thank you!!
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 5 жыл бұрын
wonderful .... yes once I make the thick water, then I add some of it and some plain water when making dye... I keep adjusting my recipe as needed.... if I am using it for outlining, then I use about half thick and half plain water.... if I am doing dye painting, then I use straight thick water and add just dye powder the main thing is to blend the thick water very good... I test it by touch... if I can feel any bits between my fingers, then I blend some more .... and then it is just a matter of finding what works best for you mixture as to how you want to use the thick water when I use it for outlining, it does not soak in like regular dye, so sometimes I have to press it in a bit... other times I get it just right ... so just play and test till you get it just how you like it

Do you have to mix all your black dye like this? Just asking because I bought some new black from dharma and tye die some white hoodies that we presoaked i. Soda ash. We used the new black and a medium blue from another company and the hoodies ended up having a pinkish tint to the white parts. It was only around the parts where the new black was. I also noticed that the dye was really thick after the process. Do you know why the pinkish came in the white or what could've caused this to happened? Sorry for the lengthy comment.

you are welcome.... the Procion dyes still give great colors up to 2-3 weeks sitting at room temp (65-70F here in Oregon) but they will last even longer if you have a fridge to store them in... I write the date mixed on a piece of duct tape on the bottles so i know when i need to re-freshen the dye by adding another scoop of powder and blending it again.... but I only do this once and then i make sure to finish it off before the 2-3 week mark. and the Thick water... I am not positive on time, but I have had it around for 3 months with no issues, but at some point it does develop a smell and then I dump the rest and start fresh, but this too may last longer if you have a spare fridge. ... and the thick dye I have around for about 3-4 weeks before I notice a difference n the color, but mostly I just have thick black dye around as I use it to outline my image designs

@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much and you are welcome 🙏 .... and no, the Soda Ash, also called Sodium Carbonate is used to raise the pH level and this is what activates the Procion Dyes the Sodium Alginate is basically ground up seaweed and when mixed with water it becomes like a gel so it thickens the water ..... so soda ash will not work for that..... but I know other dyers use other things to thicken their dyes with.... but I have only used sodium alginate, so that is all I can speak to.... here is another one and this is using powdered sodium alginate that I bought from Amazon : kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqSQaJaFq7Jpqrc

Great stuff. I've just bought some procion mx dyes after poor wash tests with Dylon stuff. I noticed I seem to be using more with it though and soaking my desk to get full colour saturation. I've got some aliginate coming today. This video mentions it for outlining but I can use it in smaller amounts for general dying right? Not sure then the method. Mix the alginate and urea water up first and then use it for the colours as and when. I'd need to reheat this thick water though right so I can add the dyes? Then quantity wise I'm not sure at all. I've figured on 2g of dye for 150ml water at the moment. How much alginate would I use for making thickish water for general dying and not outlining? I guess if I used very hot I'd get the required heat at a 50/50 mix but I'd need to have the alginate water double concentrated effectively. So how many grams per litre to make concentrated alignate water for general tie dying? many thanks
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 4 жыл бұрын
yes I have used this in my dyes for general dyeing, I used to make up a 6 gallon batch of dye water and used 4 tablespoons of sodium alginate .... I use a hand immersion blender to mix it with very hot water to get it to dissolve all the way... I would test it by rubbing some between my fingers, if I felt any kind of lumps, I would blend some more ... and then once it cooled off then I would use it at room temp and mix with the dyes ... this would thicken the dyes just slightly... you do not want it too thick, or it will not saturate very well.
@Marc-io6pv
@Marc-io6pv 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrTieDye thanks for the reply. Yes I've been testing in smaller amounts to get the right constancy. I've made the base batch concentrated and I mix water and dye first to get it mixed better then add the alginate water. Has made dying a lot better. Hand blender when I scale up is a must, it's tricky stuff huh. Cheers

Does the thickened water tend to settle when it sits and need to be shaken again before using or have I just not mixed it well enough? I blended it on and off for probably close to a half hour total, but am still not sure if I got it right, lol. Guess maybe I should just try to use it and see how it goes...
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 6 жыл бұрын
it settles some as I always shake mine before I use it ..... the main test is how it feels ..... if you can feel the little bits in there, then they will probably clog the nozzle on your dye bottle ..... it is a long process of mixing and using hot water it a must to help things break down faster ..... but there are times when I think I have it and then I get a clog, so I will do some more mixing

Nice video, I have a couple of questions. Does this thick dye work on clothes that are dry or wet? I have a faded hat that has logos on it and I want to restore the color of black with out dyeing the logos. Is it possible to use this thick dye as paint for the hat?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 4 жыл бұрын
thank you and yes you can .... as long as it is cotton ...... I would soak the hat in soda ash, spin out the excess and then let it dry completely and then use the thick black dye to paint the hat and then I would put it in a bag or a tub with a lid and let it batch for 48 hours and then rinse in cold and wash in hot a couple times

@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye Жыл бұрын
no it is not a requirement for tie-dyeing with Procion Dyes ... it can be helpful in keeping things wet while batching, but bagging your tees after dyeing, or putting them in a tub with a lid will do the same thing ✌🏻 the other thing Urea is good for is dissolving dyes better ... so I use it sometimes when I mix my black because I use double the amount of dye .... but over all, I would say Urea is Optional ✌🏻

The "recipe" from Dharma is 1 cup of urea to 1 gallon of water. I use urea all the time, but some dyers don't think you need to use it. You don't have to add alginate to your chemical water. You add the alginate if you want to thicken the dye.
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 6 жыл бұрын
Talia ...... the urea serves to help hold moisture .... so for my thick dyes it is needed as I also use it to do dye painting, so the urea keeps the dye moist longer so it can set up properly ...... I also use urea in my regular dyes, but a know a lot of dyers never use it, so it comes down to persona preference ..... as for sodium alginate, that is what thickens the dye so it does not spread very far..... I do a lot of image dyeing and use the thick black dye to outline my designs ..... hope this helps

@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye Жыл бұрын
Yeah making the Thick water is a bit of a pain .... I mix up the thick water first.... I start with just HOT water and the Sodium Alginate... and just keep blending until it is completely dissolved, I test it by rubbing some between my fingers ... it should feel completely smooth... if you feel lumps, then you need more blending as these lumps will clog the nozzle of the dye bottles ... once it is smooth, then I add the Salt and the Urea and blend until they are dissolved... then I let it cool completely as it will thicken more as it cools (you can put in the fridge if you are in a hurry) >>>> so once it is cool then I test the thickness by putting some in a small bottle and applying a line to white paper towel... I like to see it soak in, but not spread too much... if it lays on top of the paper towel it is too thick, so I add some plan water and blend, then test again... once I have the consistency I want, then I will add the dye powder.... so if I am making a lot of one color, like I do for black, I will put some thick water in a mixing cup and then add dye powder and blend it up .... BUT, if I just want small amounts or several colors, then I use a painter pallet and add some thick water to the sections and then add some dye powder and stir it up and then you are ready to paint .... so previously I have a white tee that I spray the area I am going to paint with soda ash and let it dry completely, I make sure to have something inside the tee so the dye does not go to the back of the tee.... most time I will use butchers paper and just iron a piece into the center of the tee(the back side of where I will be painting) once the tee is dry, then I paint it and then if possible, I will put in a tub with a lid to keep it damp for longer, or I will lay it flat and cover with a piece of plastic sheeting........ the Urea helps to keep the dyes wet for longer during the batching I tried painting on a slightly damp tee once and the edges of where I paint got all fuzzy looking instead of a nice line... so I alway paint on a dry tee Here is a video where I mixed up just a few colors in a pallet : kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4fLnJJojp1jl6c I tie dyed this tee and left a white space to be painted, I cued the video up to the point of painting it ... I hope this helps ... have fun and I wish you success!! I do the same with shoes, and when I put them away to batch, I put them on a rack in a bin with a lid, and then I put a few wet rags in the bottom of the bin, this will help keep the shoes wet for longer while the dyes bond here is one of the bins with rack so you can see what I mean : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iafLqIGHl82NgKM

Yes I bought this stuff from dharma... I have Sodium Alginate which is what thickens the water, and the little white balls is Urea, it is a wetting agent, so it helps to keep the cotton wet longer, which gives the dyes more time to bond with the cotton fibers, and lastly, I have salt... I use Glauber's salt, but I think regular saltt is fine as well... the salt is supposed to help the color be a bit brighter and in LWI Dyeing, the salt helps to 'push' the dyes out of the water and into the fabric ✌🏻
