How could you measure this against a toddlers head to make sure it's the right size

I think I used the wrong size needle mine is looking too big. Don't have a tape measurer. Should I put the hat onto the base of his head and see if it fits, I'm at 19:26 of the video

I have never seen anyone crochet from the inside, so on row 37, when you said to turn and crochet the front loop, it was confusing. Crocheting normally you don't have to turn, just do next row front loop.
