I’ve been searching for a recipe to make lau lau in the oven. I was worried it would have to be steamed! So glad I found this! Just made it now. Can’t wait to see how it turns out. Thank you for this post!

I did that dish in Texas, grew my own taro leaves, and it was delicious! The winter made the taro dormant but it comes back in the spring.

Much mahalo auntie..I found this vid by accident (kept on playing after watching Foodland "how to make squid luau) but I'm glad I found this recipe. You are so funny and make it look fun to do..i love the pidgin commentary and the old school stove with the timer knobs on the front..I will most definitely try this recipe along with adding coconut milk and sweet potato..I think I met Bill before but can't remember, maybe from church, lol...tnx again and looking forward to subscribing and trying your other recipes!

@@JaniceKOREA nah, I born and raised in Kalihi..went Kam School Lower Campus (Farrington) but now reside in Aiea since 2010..but yah, Bill looks sooo familiar, can't put my finger on it..I was gonna say, "I'm sure I'll run into him again" but then again, not with this COVID thingy, lol. I LOVE to cook and its so refreshing to find a page with such positive vibes. Tnx again for your enthusiastic and informative recipes!!!!!! .

My mom was military, I use to live Ewa Beach. I made this in school in a nutrition class, it was delicious!! I'm gonna definitely make this at home😊 thanks for sharing. Love your energy!!

Bula vinaka from Fiji. Aloha! I would boil the pork first until it is tender then place them in the pan with the taro leaves. You can also add coconut cream.

Loved the video. From Ewa/Ewa Beach and living in Nashville TN for over 20 years. Thinking of growing Taro next year, but for now will be trying this with Collard greens. Can I use chicken or a combo of the chicken n pork?

@@JaniceKOREA it came out pretty good it was flavorful n juicy betta den steaming I think. da only ting I gotta do next time is put more luau leaves draped over da top ! I used what I had but more luau leaves is betta ! I had fun tank u !!! Woot woot !!!

I do it this way too on the 9th Isle. Much easier to just make one huge lau lau in a pan instead of steam individual ones that take a long time to wrap.

​@@JaniceKOREA Ti Leaves are hard to come by sometimes here in the Nevada desert especially now with everything closed up because of the virus. And so my recent batch I omitted the Ti leaves. Luau Leaves are also hard to come by so i use fresh spinach. I use Salmon instead of Butter-fish. I am not fond of salted Black Cod (Butter-fish). I make mine with Pork, Beef Chuck, and Salmon. Sometimes I make Chicken Lau Lau too.

I was looking for this comment cause I was thinking the exact same thing. Probably way better all around, in my opinion. Better for the ‘aina, less waste, less work, less ‘ōpala, less washing, less prep time, etc, etc...I going try ‘em this way next time I ‘ono for laulau. Mahalo for sharing these videos 🤙🏼

I know you make how you like. Me, I'm Hawai'ian, but I was influenced by the Tongan style, and that's how I like. So, 3/4 cup Best Foods and 3/4 cup water or coconut milk, is different, but still lovely. If you like add chicken breast or squid, chance 'em.

I miss my Lau Lau on the mainland. Soooo...next best thing is spinach leaves. I put half bag spinach in crock pot. then put pork butt (and sometimes fish) with sea salt and shoyu and then cover with rest of bag of spinach. Lid seals in. Cook low for 5-6 hrs. Onolishess.

Where you live no have asian market or you can order online taro leaves frozen makes it easier to cook.

Best way is to boil whatever meat you want to use first until it is cooked, whether it's pork, chicken or mutton

Try check the Jamaican markets if have. They sell something call dasheen which is a dry land taro leaf! I almost cried when I found out I could get em on the mainland!

Cook total of 4 hours at 350. She was cooking for a small get together. The tray fed 12 people and about 1/4 the pan was leftover. Thank youuuuuuu!

ALOHA from Waialua! Gloves?!? Should I be using gloves to cut the luau leaves? I know eating Taro leaves raw is poisonous, Is that the reason for the gloves? BTW love the channel

Sorry! I forgot to say that she had surgery on her finger and she was cooking for a party. I don't think you need gloves unless you are very sensitive.

Yep use gloves if your skin is sensitive. When my Dad used to make this in his home made outdoor steamer, I used to help wash and wrap..my lower arms were so red n itchy afterwards

Thank You! No need Ti leaves if you going cook um like this. The leaves we used in this recipe is Taro Leaves. If no can get Taro leaves can use Spinach BUT gotta get PLANNY spinach leaves! Hope this helps you! WoooooHoooooo Idaho! Mele Kalikimaka!

I have not tried with coconut milk. I looked at two of my cookbooks- they put in the coconut milk halfway through. I hope this helps! =)

I did it with spinach BUT you need at least 5 bunches of spinach. =) hope this helps

In Korea I used spinach leaves. But You will need Many, Many, many leaves cuz' it will shrink down big time. It tasted good to me! Hope that helps you! Enjoy!

Yikes! I never tried salmon! Cooking time will be different. You don't want to overcook salmon but you need to cook the Taro leaves. Hummmm.... TY👍🌈💕

Good Recipe! But the one thing you need to watch is how much fat that is on the pork shoulder. That’s going to determine how much oil you’re going to have in your pan. I trim just enough fat off the meat so the lau lau will still be moist. But only if there’s lots of fat on the meat.

I think this was lau lau..but there are a few people who do pan palusami and pan lupulu. I have tried those two from different youtubers and was ono :)

Goooo 49ers! Merry Christmas to you and your family! When I was in South Korea I used spinach! BUT you gotta use PLANY PLANY (plenty) spinach! Came out good! =) Some people use collard greens.

Now that I'm retired (over ten years now) I can try something like this. Raising a son and being a single dad I used to boil the pork and use liquid smoke for speedy lau lau.

One friend suggested Collards for mainlanders. When I lived in Korea I used big spinach leaves. BUT you gotta use lots and lots and lots of spinach leaves!!! Ti leaf is only for wrapping not eating. Hope this helps! Luv J =)
