This video came to me out of the blue and I am glad it did. I realise listening to her how important the right pacing is in speaking and how many others don’t manage it. She speaks clearly and fluently with no hesitations or digressions and neither too fast nor too slow - what a joy! Colour me biased as I am Irish but I think this way of speaking is an Irish skill! Also the video made me nostalgic. My mother had her special plate for making apple tarts and made it more or less the same way. I still remember her holding up the plate and cutting off the excess pastry.

Thank you so much. When I was a little boy I would sit at the old pine kitchen table and watch my mother, who came from Co. Kerry, do exactly this, and I always loved the way she would deftly trim the edge of the plate with an ancient steel knife. I'm going to try and master this recipe. Can I just put the pastry over the top?
@SineadDavies
@SineadDavies 4 жыл бұрын
John that has made my day I’m so happy you were brought back to your childhood😊 If you were to just put pastry on top I would use a deeper pie dish as my concern would be your apples would leak off your plate ☺️ otherwise for sure you could use just a lid! Thank you for your wonderful comment ☺️

Hi Sinead, thanks for the recipe. It was a success here at home 😊 it might be a silly question but is the plate you used a normal one? I was afraid to use a normal one in the oven ...
@SineadDavies
@SineadDavies 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Vanessa! Ah that’s wonderful ❣️❤️ not a silly question at all! It is a normal plate but it is one that specifies it is oven safe on the bottom ☺️ similar to where you’d see your dishwasher safe sign. It happened by chance actually that it is oven safe because we’ve always just used plates in the oven for as long as I can remember 🤣

Is there difference between Irish apple tart and apple pie? I’m from Northern Ireland and the apple tarts here I buy from the shop are my favourite - the crust is like sugary topped shortbread. Apple pie recipe I tried doesn’t taste the same.
@SineadDavies
@SineadDavies 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! Yes there is a difference between the two. If you want one like you describe with the sugar shortbread top then I'd have a dig around for an apple pie recipe that you might be able to work with! :)

I'm sorry, but I had to give up on this recipe halfway through. After 10 tablespoons of liquid (admittedly I used milk instead of water) and half an hour of working the crumbles with the knife, I was still not closer to obtaining a real batter. Finally I went to another recipe and added sour cream and an egg to somehow make things stick. Hopefully the end result will be palatable. Kudos to those who managed to make this according to the instructions! Personally, I am very disappointed with this recipe.
@SineadDavies
@SineadDavies 2 жыл бұрын
That’s super unfortunate! I’d recommend trying it again but with 5-6 tablespoons of water only. Definitely no milk no egg and no sour cream. There’s a skill to making good shortcrust pastry so I think it’s just more practice!
