THIS RECIPE IS EVERYTHING!!!!! I dont honestly feel worthy. THANK YOU TIMES A MILLION! I'm African American but I grew up around Ethiopians in DC. Ive moved away but always missed the food my friends used to make. This really comforted my soul and was nostalgic yet current for me. Best recipe ever. THANK YOU!

Ethiopian here, born in raised in Addis Ababa till i turned 19 (2014) and moved to the States and currently residing in the DC, Maryland VA metropolitan area since (The 3 most Ethiopian concentrated states and called the DMV as a whole)…i have seen so many ways of misir being cooked but this one takes the cake only because of how the key vegetables in the beginning are puréed instead of chopped (hate onions, tomato in big chunks/visible in food) and i cool exactly the same as hers. There are only two things i will adjust on hers (well 3 but no biggie)…. 1 is to add more berbere as i prefer my misir a bit more spicier and darker than hers. 2 is to add Ghee (Kibe in amharic) which is a liquid Gold that boosts the flavor of every Ethiopian Dish. 3 is to Serve it with an injera that is a day or two old nothing more. Fresh misir goes soo well with very fresh & soft injera (ethiopian flat bread thats used as base) Last but not least, add cubes of beef before adding misir and let it cook for 5-7 mins before adding the misir. Then do exact same procedure/when misir is ready beef is also ready. *or for faster serving with beef, stir fry cubes of beef on pan with oil and slices of jalapeños. Do this when misir is 10 mins away from being ready as it takes that much to stir fry your beef to preference. Enjoy

You grew up and moved to my city (DMV) at the same time I moved to Cali. I was born in DC, grew up in Maryland and VA b4 moving across state. I discovered ethiopean food here in Cali.. I had a client who was from a village in Ethiopia near the Selena River .. her daughters name was salena 💕 I worked with her as she was special needs. After every session mom would show her appreciation to me by preparing a meal.. duro wat, silsi, gomen.. lentils kitfo etc.. once I no longer had them as clients realized I needed that ethiopean food daily 😂 I began cooking my own and I’ve gotten really good at it! I just don’t have the injera making down. I buy the bread from an Ethiopean grocery store. Ghee and berbere too! I’m addicted❤ I loved swapping life styles with you 🥰🥰🥰🤙🏽

Omg this is so similar to North Indian food, we literally eat this almost daily but with a bit more water . We call it 'Dal 'and there is a good variety of pulses in India.
@detonater1348
@detonater1348 6 ай бұрын
Thats actually true, Dal is the curry version of Misir. We call that “Alicha Misir” or “kik Misir” its basically the same as yours but we add Ghee on it. Even the thickness is the same. Good to know Misir Kik from Ethiopia is Dal in india!! Google both and see the similarity yourself for those who want to be blown away.
@detonater1348
@detonater1348 6 ай бұрын
To add a bit more to this: In Ethiopia, there are three types/ flavors of serving Lentils aka Misir One is the same as in Video above called “Misir wot” or “Key Misir” Second is the curry version called “Kik Misir” or “Alicha Misir” Third is darker lentil called “Difin Misir” the last two are mild in taste while the first is spicy. There is also other bigger lentils in general called “kik wot” with lentils being 3-4 times bigger than regular lentil/misir size.
