We're continuing the development of our new mid-size American city in Easthaven County, Massachusetts! In this episode, we wrap up the hill with the old fort and neighborhood in the northeastern corner of the island before commencing the development of the inner-city district Winter. Winter will include a park, a few run-down areas but most importantly the tricky density transition as it marks the boundary between row-house-dominated districts and the future medium- and high-density dominated downtown.

Something I thought about is if you want to add the cathedral to the city? Boston, as well as many other east coast cities, feature churches within the city centre/downtown, which can, but don't have to be surrounded by high density buildings. I also quite like the look of modern high density buildings compared directly to their old counterparts. E.g., New York, but also Boston's Trinity Church.

On the bridge you built a couple episodes back you should definitely add graffiti decals on the remains of the old bridge pillars ! This would then be established as a symbol of the new city

16:00 Graffiti writers generally don’t write on flat ground, it would usually be on a wall or ramp-like surface. This is to avoid having others step on your art
@theorixlux

I just wanna point out that skate parks never have cobble stone or tiled slabs. Its usually flat concrete else the tiny wheels of trick skateboards get caught in the smallest crevasses and lose you a lot of speed. Id replace the surface with smooth concrete. Also ive never seen graffiti on the floor. As a rule of thumb: if someone can step on it, roll on it, or shit on it, then no artist would put graffiti there.
@theorixlux

Also, instead of that picket fence, I'd probably use wide planters or raised slabs. They should be spaced close enough that cars can't fly into the skate park, but far enough that a human can just barely jump across them. functions as seating and xtra places to try tricks.

I think an interesting name for Inner Winter would be “Five Point” or “Five Dials” it’s a very common name in The USA and UK especially for smaller sub-neighbourhoods like Inner winter and would reflect the 5 road junction in the heart of the neighbourhood

Five point is not very New England centric of a name though.. Here are existing ones in Boston and MA overall; Winter hill, Maverick Square, Orient Heights, Gilman square, West End, Boston Landing (new gentrified area), Long Wharf, Jeffries Point, Union Square, bullfinch Triangle, Government Center, Back Bay.. Some in RI/Providence: Federal Hill, Fox Point, Elmwood, Olnyville, Charles.... Often it's maritime, English, or civic based names with a mix of historically important folks things would be named after. Another good context clue, anything called square (Andrew square, Scollay Square, Jackson Square) is usually an area shaped like a triangle or a spaghetti intersection. I grew up in MA / New England, for reference.

New England native here. Public spaces that are for sports are historically prioritized: baseball/softball, soccer field dimensions used for many different sports, tennis/basketball combo courts and way down at the bottom, track, skate and swimming. Public infra for hockey is almost as common as skate parks, despite being orders of magnitude more expensive. There is very little cultural momentum for skate in New England - lacrosse, pickleball and ultimate are all more popular. I think it's because (ironically) winter and frost heaves ruin skate infra so quickly and makes it unusable except for the first half year after its built. As for (pro) sports venues relate to Easthaven, I think a custom Fenway-inspired build would be most interesting (or the more modest LeLacheur Park, though Camden Yard and Oracle Park would both fit architecturally in Boston if Fenway never existed). Also Harvard Stadium. TD Garden isn't notable as a building except that there's a train station underneath it, but you've already gone with a South Station analog (good choice) and the city doesn't need two big terminus stations.
@tylermatteson7289
@tylermatteson7289 5 күн бұрын
Thinking of the "venues" with more cultural momentum than skate parks: rowing / the regatta, the marathon, skiing (downhill and cross country) and cycling. Competitive figure skating is probably more common. Boston has a really good variety (architecturally) of music venues - the calm shell on the Charles, the naming-rights-owner-of-the-month pavilion in Seaport and then a ton of historic theatres - too many great ones to name.
@theorixlux
@theorixlux 5 күн бұрын
While I agree the public placement of the skatepark probably isn't very realistic for Maine/Massachusetts, there is always strong "cultural momentum" because skating is currently mainstream "underground" sport. I'd expect to see a pretty insane skate park under the highway or over in the industrial zone(s)

Forest doesn't ruin skate infra, it's easier to build a good skate park on slight hills to use gravity and the terrain to help build features. Just COST alot more. I live in the mountings and the skate parks are built in 3 places at least around me. 1 being in a parking garage an other being on flat ground and the DIY the local community has built expands and maintains in the forest. The biggest downside of forest is simply leaves and having to brush the park but no biggie.

Some considerations for 'Inner Winter': 'Midway' or 'Midpoint' as the district is fairly central on the island and sits between Battery Hill and Downtowon. 'Winter's End' as it marks the transition from Winter to Downtown. If you keep the parks name then 'Emerson Heights' may work as a bid by the city/developers to make the area sound more high-end to capitalize off its close proximity to Downtown. Great video as always, looking forward to the next one! ❤

Hey Infra. The surface of the skatepark doesn't really fit, since they are pavement stones. Skaters could go over them, but for a park where they would do tricks a smooth pavement or concrete is much better fitting so that they don't get injured.

Emerson Park should be Oak Park. Named for the oldest Oak tree in the county, which is at its center (which is why it's so big). When the city was first founded, it was a regular meeting spot of the old harbor town as the old town square. As the years went on, it was formalized as Oak Park to protect the old tree from being a victim of newer developments.

I've been skating for 10 years now, and while the boxes could work as manny pads for solid lines, they're not exactly designed like a skatepark. A good skatepark flows, letting you link up features to create a smooth line or combo, so you can hit multiple elements in one run.

3:50 I will just mention about that layering of districts, if you want to enact any policies I'm not sure if they really work. I kept having cars driving through the middle of my old town because it was a shorter route so I tried to make a separate district inside of the bigger district and ban combustion engines but it seemed like they kept driving through, but after I removed the outer district and placed it around the border of the smaller one it seemed to work. I'm not 100% sure that's the case but just thought I'd give a heads up on my experience with districts within districts. I think for naming and statistics it works fine, idk about the rest.

Hey Infra! I live in Columbia, Missouri, and we have a large burr oak tree just outside of town that is a popular stargazing location; it has a lot of significance in our town, we even have a brewery named after it. It’s lovingly referred to as “the Big Tree”. I think your circle park could be centered around that big oak tree as much culturally as it is physically surrounding it. I therefore would like to throw in a suggestion to name it “Big Tree Park”, or, alternatively “Burr Oak Park” Love the videos!

Lore idea: Kent Winter was a blacksmith local to (enter city name here) during the construction of the fort he donated 2 cannons to the construction, having lived in on of the curved brownstone row homes. After his death the city dedicated the district name to him. Diversity wise the neighborhood of winter was a historically black neighborhood (think of Harlem in New York) with inner winter being a cultural hub for the area at the time.

Newt Smith was a blacksmith that set up his horseshoe and nail forge near the iron-rich rocks he found near the lake when the archipelago was first settled. Over the centuries people've sought out Newt Island for work, lodging, and industry until its now become an economic hub hosting a bustling financial district encircling Forge Park, Newt's historic plot of land. I recommend naming the new city Newt City :) (Kinda a joke, play on the "New City" temporary name you gave the area)

A name for inner winter that I like would be something like Canal Row. In the North End of Boston, there are several suspiciously straight roads that were build over lanes that were once used for rope making (ship's rope, which you need some very long and straight lanes to lay out). Perhaps some of the straighter roads in inner winter were once used for ship making too. And perhaps also, there was land reclamation between where the Battery was and between downtown.

Regarding the skate park, you want to use smooth asphalt, otherwise you have to get a new set of teeth afterward. Then, as well, you basically want to end a skate section with some quarter pipes, so people can turn around and not run into a wall. I would have done it like this, put a half pipe at the location of the current ramp next to the hot dog stand. Then parallel to the other road, put some quarter pipes at the ends, a ramp and some rails in the middle, then the concrete squares somewhere on the side so people can do some tricks there as well or just sit there and smoke some weed.

"Inner Winter" is obviously where the trading hub of the original town of [insert name here] was, along a formerly straight road from the natural harbour down at the water and up to where the railroad is today. This former street that doesn't exist anymore was known as "Hosier Lane" or "Hosier Street" (as in the tradesman, not the singer ;)). Later on the entire quarter became known as the "Hosier Quarter" or, because of a particularly tyrannical british lord who ran this part of the city (or tried to until the "colony" got uppity ;)), as "Hosier Court" in a mocking fashion. For whatever reason, this mocking name stuck and the neighborhood is still called "Hosier Court", even though the true financial center today lies a bit more inland.

Instead of "Inner Winter," name the neighbourhood: Outlook. It is named that way because from the neighbourhood and the park, you have a beautiful view/ "outlook" of the ocean. Name the park Outlook Park. (The long park at the foot of the hill) Many people of that side consider it a true gem. Although people tend to avoid the north side of the park... shadier activities and homelessness aren't unusual. Some suggestions; I love the fort, but could you replace the buildings inside of the fort with a castle or a mansion? A small tram system for the city would fit the vibe, with a hub close to the central station.

I would call it or if this is the direction of downtown. When you build downtown, please don't forget public service like a small school, police station and hostpital at least for local demand, maybe on the east side (opposite to the quarter you build now). A big schopping center could fit somewhere in the middle. And maybe a little tramline can cruise around, if you don't want so many parking places. Well, maybe an American downtown is much different from a German city center. By the way: the stile you build, this is how young German people dream to live in. Ten people will apply for each appartment, I guess. Great Work! 🏬🏢🏤🏥🏦⛲

I think Inner winter should be called "Jerseyside" since it is on the opposite side of the downtown area. Like in New York you have New Jersey on the opposite side of the river.

I think that Cypress Street should be renamed to Wall Street or something like that as Battery Hill would probably be an annex of the fort and might have a wall around it on the hill where the park is

Name idea for "Inner Winter" : "[The] Narrows". Initially, the industrial area and what would become the downtown were separate, but as both grew in size along with the area, more and more housing and development was needed in this area, but was effectively 'squeezed' by the encroachment of both the downtown and the industrial area - ergo, "Narrows". Also refers to how skinny the strip of land it occupies, from the rail lines down to the waterfront.

You should be able to expand the 'hangout zones' that are part of the circle park to cover the extra areas you added, thatway cims might actually use the areas

You should rename inner winter to something like “East end” (west end depending on the actual location it is to winter sounds more natural and makes a lot more sense for it to be a locals way of describing an area it should be simple and directional based

Well winter will border downtown with the unofficial neighborhood as the buffer. The buffer for winter in the real world if you consider downtown summer...theb unofficially that section could be named Spring. But with being to on the nose, I see there is a 5 way intersection right in the middle, so like then5 points in NYC, Five Springs is the name

The customize skatepark 😵‍💫 just put two quarters pipe on each side of the longest part. The fun box in the middle. One rail along the fun box and maybe one manual pad + one rail in the remaining space. Ok my explanation would be more efficient with a small draw 😅

I admire your creativity. The way you build and detailing, but typical American cities are massive sprawls. A large American city can be 50 sq miles to 470 sq miles or more, not including surrounding metro areas. Grids and non grids with areas that span for several or dozens of blocks, lots of suburban subdivisions and lots of space not efficiently used. Your cities are very small in scale, compared to real world cities like Richmond, VA. Chicago, IL. Atlanta, GA. Philadelphia, PA. Houston TX. Los Angeles, CA etc. I started a build to create something comparable to the scales of those cities, and I ran out of space. Even with all tiles acquired, It wasn't enough. What I want to see is a project that is massive and functional. Having a city, then metro areas, and outskirts of town, with urban shopping centers, districts, and suburban shopping centers, malls etc.. The game might be too limited to build such a scale, but that's what I wanna see. Those are the kind of projects I wanna make with CS2. On another note, CO needs to made custom assets available asap.
