I love reusing containers like coffee and tea tins to use for plants. They are so easy to hammer drainage into. I've also started using ash trays and other shallow bowls I have been hoarding as plant saucers. Thank you for making this video and caring about the environment, Fern 🌿

Additional watering tip. If you have a basement or a damp area in your home w/o plants, I recommend utilizing a dehumidifier to prevent mold BUT added bonus…you can collect the water and use it on your plants. Just keep the tank clean/strain the harvested water.

Definitely always saving nursery pots to reuse and saving any other plastic cups/containers to use in place of nursery pots when planting into an item that’s not really a planter or is oddly shaped/sized. For example I had this really beautiful cache pot that was just too small for a 6 in nursery pot but also oddly too tall for a 4 in one so I was able to reuse a fage yogurt container which fits PERFECTLY inside and I just used a hot glue gun without any glue to burn drainage holes into the bottom!!

I remove the stick of glue and wipe all the glue off the tip, let it get super hot and just press firmly where you want the hole, sometimes I’ll also use a skewer or something to help pole through and widen the hole while the plastic is still hot

Pro tip, buy mature brown coconuts to eat and use a peeler to shave off the husk and shove it in your mix! That's what I do. Coconuts are only 59p in the UK and I love coconut, so it's win win 😀.

I reuse my potting soil by putting a couple of drops of dish soap and and worm castings and long acting fertilizer and mixing it all together by hand. The dish soap allows the soil to decompact and start holding water again

Glass bottles for water props and perlite props... plastic cups for leca... refresh old soil if its good or compost old soil along with dead leaves etc. Fertilizer water made from skins of fruit, egg shells, which is stored in old plastic bottles. That's my contribution 😊

i save literally every mason jar that comes through our house for repotting, my family thinks i'm insane but they're great for water propagation! i don't understand why people don't save nursery pots. they come with plants all the time and then you can just pot a new plant in them right then i loved this video, from a fellow tree hugger house plant parent!

Anytime you are running water I keep a container under the tap to save that water for my plants. I also use dehumidifier water for my plants. Use coffee, banana peels and eggs in a blender for added fertilizer for outdoor plants. Save boiled water used for food for my outdoor plants as well. Great video. We can all do our part

Stereofoam and broken terracota are great to put at the bottom of pots. I do that so the soil at the bottom dried faster because it’s airy. I don’t care what people say, it worked for me

Easy rainwater collecting method I use. A bucket w/ a lid (I upcycled a kitty litter container lol) and an umbrella. Cut a hole in the top of the umbrella. Turn the umbrella upside down and set it on top of the bucket. I use the little Velcro strap meant to tie around the umbrella to secure it to the handle of my bucket - that way it doesn’t blow away lol. The surface area of the umbrella will collect rain water a lot more efficiently than just setting a container out. An airtight lid is also very important for keeping mosquitos from laying their eggs in the water! I always make sure to close the lid after it stops raining.

@@kangaroonick57 Some wood can rot pretty easily and fast, but there's some wood like cedar and pine that's much more rot-resistant. You'll have to be a little careful with those though because they can raise acidity. I just think they're a cute and free (but temporary) alternative to moss poles.

My new fav is planting in glasses, empty candle jars, fake crystal, all empty sauce jars I even propagate with perlite in like pasta sauce jars or just regular glass jars with glass lids and it works!? It’s awesome to watch and you can paint the inside of the glass as well so the paint doesn’t look tacky and the glass isn’t clear

Loved this video so much!! I stopped spending 5-10 dollars a pot and spent $10 for 500 clear drink cups on Amazon to pot in! I bought 9oz and 20oz and have enough for a year! I will continue to fertilize my plants too. I do use fish emulsion that I use monthly and other stuff in between. I bought the bag of Better Gro orchid fertilizer and mix it to spray my Hoyas. Beats buying bottles every month! I have been known to pot plants in soup cans and veggie cans and even tuna cans. You keep doing what is good for you!! These things make a difference. I also bought a compost unit for my kitchen. I love it!!

These are really wonderful tips. We get so much rain where I live, I can’t believe it’s never occurred to me to reserve some rain water. I love repurposing glass containers from packaged food items for propagation. For instance, I’ve repurposed glass coconut yogurt containers (which also happen to be roughly votive candle-size, for all of my candle cweens out there) to regrow scallions. I also used an old rice wine vinegar bottle to propagate one of my spider plant babies: The mouth of the bottle is just narrow enough that the baby won’t tip over, and the long neck of the bottle will allow me to view the growth of the roots.

I started baking used and old soil after repotting plants, root bits and all. I fertilize on the regular so baking out nutrients is not an issue for me. After seeing how much amendment rich soil I was tossing into my neighbor’s garden, last year, I decided that it’s wasteful to my pocket book! Although, my neighbor may be sad, I’m loving it!

I reuse pots and soil when possible, I put OLD soil outside in our yard, I’ve used rain water but not consistently, I use old things as pots (containers , plastic cups, ect) . It’s never a bad thing to reuse ♻️!

Large soda bottles make great leca net pots. Just cut to height, use the bottom as a pot. I use a carpet/box cutter to make slits. And those large bottles of distilled water are great for that too.

I remember when Mason jars were a huge thing and sold at michaels. But you can wash out pasta sauce glass containers and use them for plant propagation. Also I love bread yeast bottles , they are tiny amber glass bottles that I reuse for propagations. Love this eco-friendly video!!

I absolutely love that you brought this conversation to the table 💚 Another thing that you can do to be more sustainable in your plant care practices is to use fish tank water for a perfectly balanced, all-in-one plant fertilizer. Fish tank water is filled with life- especially beneficial microbes that your plant needs for survival. A lot of the microbes that come in potting mixes actually slowly die off in between waterings as the soil dries out but is replaced when you use the waste water from your fish tank. I swear by the stuff and my plants can’t get enough of it 🐟💩 Big ag companies like Miracle Grow & General Hydroponics are owned by Monsanto (sorry Fern, I know you’re a fan 😅) which creates synthetic fertilizers, pesticides & chemicals that are poisoning our planet. If you use fish tank water, instead, you’re saving on plastic containers your fertilizer comes in too!

Another really sustainable option is finding a natural spring near you. I am pretty lucky that I can go fill up my jugs with natural spring water and my plants love it. I know not everyone has the option, but those who do definitely should. Just as sustainable as rain water- which I’m also an avid support of. I got two hook ups for rainwater on my house, but you’ve gotta make sure to clean your gutters and know what type of gutters you have! Along with your roof. Peat and coco is a tough area. Because, the palm industry is VERY questionable. Peat is become more involved with AG laws to try and be better. But, we do what we can and like you said- reuse, reuse, reuse and know who you are SUPPORTING. No thank you MG! Lol Thank you for bringing awareness to a very important topic ❤️❤️

Awesome topic! I reuse all my plastic lids in the bottom of my cache pots to raise the inner nursery pot off the bottom. I never replant into the ceramic/terra because then I can't change my mind without a hassle. I put the cache pot where it looks best and can change out the plants on whether it's happy there or not, and don't have to deal with trays, the weight, etc. - and I'm in the process of switching all to semi-hydro - love it!

I rescue plants from curbside.... they usually come in pots and soil.... I reuse all of it. Bake the soil to reuse in my outdoor plants or I use in my outdoor raised beds garden 😀.... I just rescued 3 huge fiddle leaf fig trees.... one is about 10 ft tall the other two is 4 and 5 ft

I reuse my foundation and other makeup bottles as propagation jars. And just buy plants/cuttings off fb marketplace. Also have seen second hand materials like perlite being sold on fb marketplace. The hardest to find is pots. I was lucky enough to come across a lady on fb marketplace who has hundreds of terracotta pots, and she gave me some for free. But a part from that theres little luck for second hand ones (at least, ones that are nice) - so in that event I paint the ugly ones lol (which is so therapeutic), or I've resorted to other sustainable options (i.e. The Good Pot Co --> decorative pots made of recycled paper in Bunnings in Australia // or selected Northcote pottery pots at Bunnings --> made of recycled materials like bamboo husks and nut shells (Benji Pot if anyones interested)) Definitely an important topic and agree that small actions in every part and hobby of your life creates huge differences

I am super proud of my low waste watering system. I either use rain water because I am blessed to have a rain barrel outside or we will use the water we siphon out of our goldfish aquarium. I have old spinach containers from the grocery store that I put my pots in and water in those. And then take the water that has drained out and keep using it until all of it is done for all the plants. They really like the aquarium water and have been growing nonstop. Makes me feel a little bit better about my footprint with the house plants .

One way I "upcycle" in my planty decor is by using a cute old food or drink container to conceal a nursery pot: like a cool looking cardboard box from a 6-pack of local craft beer... it only lasts a couple months, but it's fun to change it up 🙃 A couple people mentioned 🚿 capturing shower water 🚿 ... I'm totally stealing that for my indoor & outdoor gardening.

I have used my old clear chewing gum containers as propagation vessels a lot!! I either use them with leca or I poke holes in the bottom and just use them like a regular 5cm diameter nursery pot. I love them. I don't eat a lot of gum anymore, but I still have a lot of those containers left to use haha

I have always collected rain water for my houseplants and bonsai, its very cheap and easy to set up a rain water collector if you have a drain pipe and totally worth it as some plants are fussy about what water they get but none of them have a problem with rain water

Instead of boiling perlite, I've been cleaning them with topical hydrogen peroxide solution. I soak it in the solution (no water or other additives) and just leave it there until I need to use it. In my experience, it kills the algae perfectly which is my main aim.

This is awesome topic and i really enjoyed your video! 🤩 For me finding new ways to be more sustainable, like reusing containers is so rewarding haha 😂 One thing though that I'm concerned about is the energy use of humidifiers and grow lights 😬 I'm always debating whether i should shut them down earlier or not. But on the other hand, it is necessary for the plants to thrive and this hobby is nothing if the plants are not happy.

Bit late commenting on this video but hey ho. I have a wormery which I use to put all my food scraps in. The worm castings (liquid worm poo) makes a perfect fertiliser!

I water my plants with aquarium water. I have 9 aquariums so there is plenty of water to go around. If no plants need water on a day when I clean a tank then I put the water in a 1 gallon container. My plants love the water.

I also use old 10 and 20 gallon aquariums as prop boxes. I reuse glass jars to put my cuttings in and I put them in the tank.

I 've Picked Up Starbuck's And Big Gulp Cups To Propagate My Plants In...I Even Have A Mini- Monstera Growing In Soil In One. IT Fits Down Inside A Vase With Stripes , Red Hearts And The Word Love Written On Each Heart. I Found The Vase At The Goodwill That Was Near Flora Grubb's Gardens Where I Would Buy Plants. After That... It Was Off To The Goodwill To Find Pots, Pitchers And Other Vessels... Works Of Art To Go With My Living Works Of Art!!! I BELIEVE They Took Notice Though...Because The Prices Went UP!!! 🤨🤨🤨

My fiancé drinks sooo much coffee along with that is creamer so I’ve reused the coffee creamer container for watering/fertilizer water. And it’s been so handy cause it pours greatly!

Love that you mentioned boiling your sphagnum moss! The sphagnum moss I own is all from buying from local sellers and tbh it’s not my favorite medium haha but I do want to use it for a prop box… I was always unsure how to “sterilize” it though. So again, thank you 🌿

Unless a plant has died or had pests in moss or perlite, leca or whatnot, I don't do anything to it. Also, invest in live moss. I bought 5kg last summer and kept two boxes under grow lights and it just keeps growing. Sometimes it grows faster than my props.
