When it dries, it will dry an off colour. If you want it to stay white, add a teaspoon of white acrylic paint. Also it can be stored for around 4 months in an airlock bag and to ensure it doesn't go mouldy add a teaspoon of white vinegar or lemon juice to the initial ingredients.

I use equal amounts of cornflour and ready mixed crack repair filler, then bind with PVA then add just a splash of beach to stop it going mouldy. The crack filler helps to make the finished product more durable
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Alan I use the crack filler with toilet tissue and pva glue to make a much stronger clay. the toilet tissue gives it bulk without the weight. It stays very light but it is not as smooth as this one.

Thank you I have made fairy houses and beads I cover jars paint them and give them away as gifts there are many things you can do with this. Try rolling out and covering a wine bottle then make it like brickwork wait until it dries and paint it like a lighthouse or turret (remember cut out a few windows) Pop one of those corks with a light in it and you have a fab night light or dinner table light.

They will love it as long as they don't eat it. Ask her to let it dry in a cool but not cold room it dries well if not too thick and to warm a room makes it dry too fast on the outside and makes it crack a little. But if this happens don't worry the cracks are not to bothersome if you paint it. I do thank you for your kind comment and I do hope they enjoy their clay day.

What I remember about using salt dough was it had to be baked. If it's what we made 30+ years ago (flour, salt, water, maybe some oil) then it's basically just a salty bread dough. You can't get bread dough to set up in the sun.

Your welcome Trisha just mess around with it until you get the right consistency for what you are doing. Too much cornflour will make it dry and crumble. Mine can take between 1 and 2 days to dry depends on how thick the item you're making is. If you want it stiffer and less oil.
@garliclover01

Also, you can use oil paints, oil pastels to color your clay. You have to scrape the pastels into powder. I prefer using oil paints.

Hi Alison....thanks so much for this...I have grandchildren!! Can you tell me when to add colouring...I assume it's when you add glue? Also how long to dry, do you need to varnish or anything and can you pain the finished article. Thank you
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 6 жыл бұрын
You can add color when you add glue, food coloring will work or poster paint. You might need to wear gloves hahaha you can paint when finished acrylic paint, poster paint even watercolor as long as it's not saturated. Drying time depends on where you dry it. If you dry it too quick it may crack. But tiny cracks will not be seen if you intend to paint over it. I dry mine in my cool craft room the thicker and bigger the project the longer it needs to dry. Don't cook it as it will puff up and come out like rock cakes.

I have made beads if you add just a bit more flour to make it stiffer and really kneed it well it will get a bit more solid to work with the more you kneed it the better it gets. It should do small things. Some people said it is too soft and small objects lose their shape but if they kneed it more it will toughen up more.

Dries well and has a nice consistency. My only gripe is it's a non Newtonian substance, which is neither solid nor liquid and therefore loses it's shape before drying. Would it work better with flour?
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 5 жыл бұрын
If you kneed it more it will work. Yes it will work with plain flour too.

Thank you for this video. My children will be in their element with this cheap, versatile and easy to make clay. How long before it goes hard? Can you keep it moist in a bag to keep longer???? Please anybody???
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 5 жыл бұрын
drying will depend on what they make and how thick it is. It will keep in a plastic bag if you squish the air out and tie a knot in it. I don't keep it for any longer than a week but my sister has kept some for nearly 2 weeks with no problems. I hope this helps xx

@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, Uliana, I covered glass jars with it and it is fine. You can add color paint even food color to it as you make it for one solid color. You can paint it when it is dry and even give it a few coats of varnish for durability.

Uliana Grosei- This clay is called " Cold Porcelain " it works fairly well, shrinks when it dries, and makes beautiful flowers. You should look up cold Porcelain tutorials!

Yes, my sister does this she leaves it in the mould to dry then removes it but she only uses silicon moulds which are easier to remove. Sandra kneed the clay a lot longer to make it tougher.

It should not crack or brake easily. It will if it is banged around as any clay probably would.

In a number of videos on air dry clays they use an acrylic caulking product (DAP makes one), about 3 squirts from a caulking gun in their mix and claim this keeps their clay from cracking.

Same here!! I've started (and finished!!) more things from Alison than anywhere. Usually starting them the same dang day. I know this is years later but I only found her about a year ago and she's become a beacon of gladness for me these crazy days. And I was so touched to hear her talk about getting to 40k subscribers. It's one of my top five pretty much daily go-tos. xoxo

@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 6 жыл бұрын
There are recipes on youtube where you put it in the oven you cook it to harden it. You can put this in the microwave for 30 seconds but it turns a dark yellow and swells up a bit. It does go rock hard but I prefer to let it harden on its own. You can also make it without oil. The oil just stops it sticking to your fingers and makes it more pliable until you mold it. It will dry a little quicker without the oil but tends to flake a bit around the edges.
