I'd recently met up with some friends who have come to own some pretty quick scooters. Maintaining scooter supremacy is of paramount importance, so I set to work building some custom parts to change my gear ratios and go quicker than ever before.
This is a build you can pull off with just some basic hand tools in any average workshop. Get some steel, and have at it!

A while ago an old dude gave me a scooter like yours and i asked you about some stuff and what you answered helped me a lot. I have now gone from 24v lead acid to my electric bike battery that are 48v and i bought a 500w 48v controller on AliExpress for it. It actually works very good but the brakes, oh my lord. Like yours before you changed them. Today they just failed me on my test ride downhill and i was about to roll straight into main road but luckily just managed to send it sideways into a different street and that saved me. The brakes was smoking like they were on fire. Kinda embarrassing as im 49 and have never ridden a scooter before and here i am. Lol. My sprockets are 11 and 80 and i could not find a larger 54mm sprocket with more teeths so i found a 9teeth sprocket and are gonna switch the front instead. Hoping it will pull harder uphill as that is my main issue being 92kilo. My electric bike got also a new controller and i upgraded to a 60v battery. Omg it rips. Straight wheelie. I need to be careful. The 60v battery i believe have fake 16awg cables and they feels thin very thin and im guessing thats why the voltage drops from 63v to 52v as soon as im on full throttle for 3-5 seconds. Can i just solder in thicker cables? Havent opened a 18650 16s battery pack before. Anyway thanks!!

Really glad you weren't hurt - stock brakes do suck! Better wiring may help but make sure you know what you're doing before messing with the battery.

@@WhatUpTKHere yep, Im familiar with electricity, and I tried a 60v battery on my 48v bicycle now. The claim was 28000mah 60v but I went from 64 to 45v within about 900 meters. That's almost 1 kilometer. Then the BMS on battery shut it down and I needed to replug it to wake it up again. Either the battery is so bad or I should buy 2 and parallel it to help each other.

That thing hauls ass LOL. Great job on the sprocket. Regarding the comment about the brushless, Razors are still relevant because they're readily available anywhere for small money and your mods take it to the modern age. It's great to be able to reuse stuff. I have eBikes I've built but still play with these motors, they're fun.

TK, I’m also in the process of upgrading an E300. I’ve changed the controller to the 36v from FastScooters, replaced the SLA batts to Lithium, and was about to upgrade the drive sprocket from a 10T to 14T but burnt my stock motor before I could get there. So here I am binge watching all your vids again for the appropriate motor. I see you went with a 500w but are running it at nominal voltage. I want to buy a 24v 500w and over-volt with my 36v setup but am worried about toasting the coils. I don’t have hills and would only run it 3 miles between charges (~15 minutes straight). Do you think that could still fry it? Also how did you get over the decreased speed using the controller from eBay over your much faster hacked controller?
@WhatUpTKHere
@WhatUpTKHere 4 жыл бұрын
Robert Trujillo hey Rob! So I did actually go for a 36V 500W motor. Unfortunately as you’ve seen in the series, despite the extra power, it rotates slower than an overvolted stock motor. That’s what prompted all the gearing changes. I wouldn’t recommend overvolting motors, it’s simply a good way to go fast for a few hours before you burn up an expensive motor.
@WhatUpTKHere
@WhatUpTKHere 4 жыл бұрын
Robert Trujillo if you’re really light on it and keep elevation changes to a minimum, you might be okay, but no promises. I’m tempted to go brushless one day but $$$ are a big factor.

Thanks for the prompt response and advice. I too want to go with a brushless and saw some videos on how you can repurpose a car alternator as one - well not fully, just not the rotor field winding. Either way I’m sure you’ll post the next build for us. Thanks again and btw your witty comments always have me laughing. ✌️

The most simple way to make a sprocket is to wrap a chain containing the number of teeth you want around a blank disc of the correct diameter, so that the chain joins up properly with a joining link. Then sandwich the chain between two blank discs of larger diameter on a common shaft and squash the sandwich in a press. The rivets in the chain will leave punch marks on the blank disks which can be drilled. The drilled holes will have perfect pitch with no accumulated error. The disc can now be turned and filed to finish the diameter and tooth shape

Nice work. For anyone else doing this: consider using hand files to do the final refinement of the teeth, it gives you much better control, albeit at the cost of a longer time. If you want to see the kinds of precision that can be achieved with hand tooling, look at the Clickspring channel. That guy does amazingly beautiful things with hand filing.

What is missing from this: Ok, its faster, great. Now the speed exceeds the ability of the brakes to stop in a safe distance. Now the wheelbase is too short to be stable and avoid pitching forward. Now the wheels are too small to handle pavement issues at that speed etc. Now the lack of suspension causes the ride to be dangerously undstable. It is time to admit that speeding up this scooter is a bad idea, focus instead on longer battery life, and more torque for climbing hills.

I dont see why your having such trouble hitting 20mph. I have the exact same brush 36v motor and put a 15t #25 sprocket on the motor to the stock 56 rear, a 20ah lipo cell 1860 battery pack, $14 amazon generic brush motor 36v controller with xt60 connectors soldered on for motor and battery, and I have 10" northern tools tires on it and I hit 24mph max and around 17 uphills. goes just as fast on gravel too. recently I've been building a new one that I made piece by piece with scrap metal that I welded together and used a 48v 1000w brushless motor and 20ah lipo battery pack and my gear ratio is all screwed up, at the moment the gear ratio 15t -56t and it does a 2 foot high wheelie as soon as you hit the throttle barely and holds it for 5 feet before dropping back down, I hot 30mph on flat ground and 25 uphill.....scary.
