Great video and great drill! Fedor Gorst showed me this drill and a variation that starts with this setup, but he moved both the object ball and cue ball toward the spot (toward the center of the table but still on the head/foot line) by 1 or maybe 2 balls distance. The goal was to pocket the ball without the cue ball touching a rail and no right/left spin on the cue ball. Takes a really good smooth stroke. Are you familiar with that one? I struggle with it and would love to see it demonstrated again.

Love your videos. Very easy to understand and remember when I get to the table. One question, the graphic display of the cue tip one the cue ball looks the same on the stop shot and the draw shot. The stroke also looks the same with the cue follow thru. Why is the cue ball stopping or drawing when the mechanics of the stroke and cue placement look the same?

GREAT info Niels. Thanks. Exactly what I did to 'warm up' for over a year ... but let myself believe I didn't need to anymore. I should do it again for a while. Also helpful: I tested what DISTANCE I could put do a stop shot so that the cue ball spins in place after. It gave me a database of how much spin I could still reliably pocket balls (eliminating all the other variables) and making sure I was absolutely dialed in with my shaft's deflection. Let's you know what you "own."

I've been playing pool for many years and every practice session starts with setting up straight in stop shots from a couple feet to table length. I'm looking for a dead stop with no unintended side spin on the cue ball or the cue ball sliding an inch or so left or right. Then I follow and draw these straight in shots. If I miss it's a stroke issue. This drill gets my stroke and hand eye coordination in order. No quick jerk strokes. Smooth back and forward motion with my vision zeroed in on the object ball before pulling the trigger. Any beginner or lower level players reading this and watching this video, take heed. You'll never advance beyond where you are until you've mastered a straight stroke.

Good drill-nice and simple. Also, I just want to say-for those who haven’t seen your vid on bank shots-putting a little (very little) outside english on the cue ball when you have to cut the bank shot has been a revelation! Not only have my banks, even full-length banks, become much more reliable, but I’m passing it on to the people I play with (cause I like competition), and their bank game improves immediately! Neils, you’re the MAN!

I’m loving the moments of honesty in these videos. It’s nice to see a world class player admit the multiple takes to get the shot they want on camera. There’s a human element here that other videos miss. Great stuff Niels! I don’t have a full size table. I have a portable one I set up every night and can only shoot going 1 direction because of the little room I have. Still though- during the pandemic I’ve been able to improve, and I attribute that to drills like this. I practiced stop, follow, and draw shot drills over the first 6 months of lockdown almost exclusively, and it really improved my stroke.

I'm getting a nice "X" worn into my cloth! Love this drill! I finally went 16 for 16 last night with the stop shots! If I stop acting like "Slacker Niels" lol and practice more, I may be nailing all the draw and follow shots soon too. Thanks again.

@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen It is a straight pool training game. You rack 15 balls and break them. Every level must be achieved 2 times to move up a level. Level 1: Beginner - At this level you begin with cue-ball in hand anywhere on the table and you get three misses before your inning is over. After each miss, you start with ball-in-hand anywhere on the table. Your object is to try and pocket all fifteen balls before your third miss. If after 10 racks you average a total score of 120 (4 balls per miss), you can move to Level 2. Level 2: Intermediate - Here you begin with cue-ball in hand anywhere on the table and get two misses before your inning is over. Now, your object is to pocket all fifteen balls before your second miss. If after 10 racks you average a total score of 120 (6 balls per miss), you can move to Level 3. Level 3: Advanced - As in previous levels, you begin with cue-ball in hand anywhere on the table, but only get one miss before your inning is over. If you miss anytime as you attempt to pocket all 15 balls, your inning is over. If after 10 racks you average a total score of 120 (12 balls per miss), you can graduate to Level 4. Level 4: Professional - At this level you begin with ball-in-hand in the kitchen after the break. Like level 3, you only get one miss, but this time your goal is to pocket 20 balls in a row. You might initially be confused as to how you can pocket 20 balls with only 15 on the table. At the professional level, you play through the rack as you would in the game 14.1 Continuous. In other words, after pocketing 14 balls and leaving your cue-ball in such a position that when the 14 balls are re-racked, you can easily pocket the 15th ball and on the same stroke break the rack to continue pocketing balls. If after 10 innings you average a total score of 170 or better, you should be on the tour. Note: For all levels, a foul counts as a miss, and if you miss or foul at the same time you pocket a ball, that ball doesn't count towards your score. The ball is respotted.
