Thanks for another video! I recently upgraded to a Balmar 100A alternator with a mc614 external regulator. I plan to continue to carry the OEM 35 A alternator on my boat! I think any boat needs to carry a back up for everything!!!

I’ll tell you what I learned a heck of a lot about how my boat works just buying one of those Victron battery monitors. You can tell how many amps your alternator is actually charging your battery bank. My next thing is to get an external regulator. I would like a recommendation from you guys. Max 50 amps would be great.

Hi Franklin, I'd recommend the Balmar 614 for an external regulator.

My recently rebuilt alternator shows voltage output on the bench but does not output amps when installed. The alternator light comes on, while the other alternator works just fine. What causes something like this?

my alternator seems to increase the starter battery voltage from 12 to 14 but as soon as my orion tries to put charge into my house battery the starter battery voltage drops to 12v and because of my engine shutdown detection setting of 12.7 it turns the orion off, could this be the alternator not able to give enough amps? its a 55 amp alternator on a 2gm20 - with a 100ah start battery., If i turn off the engine shutdown detection while the engine is running then the start battery will sit at around 12.7v with only about 5-8 amps going into the house at 13.3v - the orion is set to charge at 14.4v however it never gets to this voltage.

I have a question. In a system connected with an acr, alternator connected to starter battery and solar to house bank (both agm), and say their charging voltage is different simply because of the state of the batteries. Will it be a problem? And if it is, what will be the solution?

Hi Deniz, as long as both starting and house battery are same battery chemistry (e.g. AGM), no problem using a Battery Combiner (or Automatic Battery Combiner ACR).

Wrong in the very first sentence. If the boat is pre 90's your right. But newer boats are much more complex. I laughed when he said 99% of boats have this wiring diagram.
