Dr Hume, thank you- I will add this to my routine. 15 years ago I fell off a ladder and had a serious knee injury. It was a long recovery and rehabilitation, and praise the Lord, I don’t live with pain, but the knee doesn’t function normally. The last words from my surgeon, “ keep your legs strong.” Been doing backwards and sideways walking and my balance has improved!

Very helpful info !! Will definitely try out these exercises. My calf muscles are very very tight since I had back surgery a few years ago

Walking does not move you forward. It moves you however you please. Dancers know this. Look to the dancers to see what walking can be. If you think "walking" only means forward, then you are likely accustomed to shoes that are like strapping planks to your ankles. Try wearing moccasins and look where you step, not where you're going, lest you trample something, and see if you like it. It will take time before it stops being uncomfortable, so don't dismiss it too early if you can't do it well. It's a skill, and I found that I needed to develop better peripheral vision to be good at it.

Thank you for your videos! I will definitely include these exercises to enhance my walking. Meanwhile I have increased my stride length by focusing on one thing: fully contracting calves and soleus AFTER toe off with each step. I believe it helps with the pumping action on the veins and lymph vessels as well.

I suddenly developed a fallen arch on my left foot about 3 years ago. I did not injure the foot. I saw a Podiatrist and have an orthotic which has helped a little but I still get quite a bit of disabling pain in the top of my foot if i walk more than about 3000 steps in a day. Do you have any exercises that could help with this specific problem? Thank you and I love your videos and presentation style.

I seem to have a bad case of venous insufficiency from having 5 children. It’s very difficult for me to walk or stand for very long. Do you think these exercises would help me get back to walking? I wear compression socks that help.
