As part of my therapy for knee replacement, I had to walk backwards and I had to walk side to side. It was amazing how sore it made me but it was also amazing how helpful it was in the end to get my strength and balance back.

You did a video on the benefits of backwards walking and now this video about the benefits of sideways walking. You should also do a video on the benefits of sleepwalking and then the benefits of Michael Jackson's moonwalking.

@@drstevenhulme You've done great videos on the benefits of walking forwards, walking backwards and walking sideways. Now that you've already covered those, your next video logically should be about the benefits of walking diagonally.

@@drstevenhulme After you do a video about the benefits of walking diagonally which I think is a fantastic idea, you should then do a video about the benefits of walking in circles. I've been walking in circles for years and it has done wonders!

Excellent information. I do the crab walk per a physical therapist due to weak glute muscles. Thank you for showing me the correct way to do it ensuring that the knee goes out first instead of the foot!

In 1970s American football for teens, these types of walking are similar to what were called agility drills, except one would be running or using fast chopping steps instead of walking.

I Should mention that I make the comparisons with Tai Chi merely to highlight that what you are demonstrating has a very respected support. I also practise Qigong and one of the principles in there is, when performing turns from the Waist, to avoid allowing the knee to drift inwards towards the other knee, as this is bad for the knee-joint. I notice that you make a similar point when discussing sideways walking.

Another helpful video, thank you. On your backward walking video I commented on the similarity with the Tai Chi form and here I would highlight that in Tai Chi you are taught to place the foot first before shifting the weight onto that leg, not to just shift your weight at the same time as moving the foot and leg. This makes the muscles work more and improves balance and stability. I also note your advice of not having the foot ahead of the knee; this is facilitated in Tai Chi by working with the knees somewhat bent and “sitting” somewhat into the movements. Good stuff!

Tai chi is great to help us practice walking forward, backward, and sideways, very mindfully and aware of our weight shift and foot placement. I encourage my students to notice how they move in these directions throughout the day. Sideways movement is used in getting in and out of the shower or car, also lots of weight shift in all directions when doing such household activities as laundry and emptying the dishwasher!

Reminds me of moving into position to do a side kick in martial arts. Cool. My knees have been really acting up since I tried to start running again so I've been watching all these knee strengthening videos. Started walking backwards a couple of days ago. I'll have to try sideways as well.

@@eric.j.grooms Great! Never felt better. My knee pain has been gone for some time now. I like walking backwards up hills since it really helps quite a bit. I think I need to make sure to also walk forwards up some hills too. I felt some noticeable tightness and soreness in the area below the calves and above the heels while walking forward up a hill uptown yesterday. Especially my left leg. When I turned around and went backwards the soreness left before I returned home, but the fact that it flared up tells me that muscle area must be weak.

I had my hip replaced 2 years ago, and my PT had me walking both forwards, backwards, and sideways. I appreciate the explanation for what muscles are used for sideways and agree, doing it right you can definitely feel the muscles working. I will try the resistance band to improve my muscles. Thank you.

Swinging each leg in turn around, and in front of the foot with ground contact while walking also achieves the same result for knee strengthening. That helps with landing on the ball of the foot, and its hard in turn to pronate inwards so helps with stability.

Wow. I'm trying this as I'm listening as I have an issue with my left hip flexors and my ankle and foot. This is reàlly working on those weak spots. I've also started the backwards walking and I am very thankful I came across your videos. I am fully persuaded this is precisely what I need. I've come along way through pain and trials but this is what I need. It's starting at the basics, the foundation, strengthening while in function.

It’s hard to say without knowing the cause but generally movement is good but ideally without overly aggregating it. Listen to your body and do what feels good.
