Hi, Paul! I really love these videos you've been doing that feel like one-on-one painting classes. I hope you'll keep doing them! This week's video was a milestone for me: I've never liked any sepia painting before... Not even Bob's! *Gasp.*😂 But I liked your painting so much I've watched it three times already, and each time I watch it, I like it more! I love the orange highlights on all the trees and foliage. I love the extra little water sprays at the base of the waterfall. (Tell Terri thanks for the tip!) I loved the composition. I also loved that even though it was a gorgeous scene, it looked like something I could attempt! Thank you so much for the demonstration of how NOT to paint waterfalls! Up to this point, I was too scared to try painting one. But now I know that if I don't like the way it turns out, I can just scrape it off and start over! And I've figured out that I can do that for any other thing I paint, as well! Thanks for another great video! Loved the feels trip! Loved everything! Have a great week!

My less than pleasant neighbour hacked off a branch some time ago. But being a tree it just grew two new ones! Ha! Our garden is a wildlife haven and Henny sleeps out all summer. We call him Jungle Jim! All scruffy and covered in grass seeds and slug slime! But he likes it. Poppy cat looks on with incredulity! So life in the studio moves on and I must return to my easel. @@PaulRansonArt As I'm getting ready to paint it I realize I don't know how to make the orange color you are using. Is there a way to make that from the standard colors or did you buy a specific orange? Also, is there another way to make the branches in the backdrop that doesn't require the linseed oil? This paint is just SO beautiful and I really want to try and make mine similar to yours.
@PaulRansonArt
@PaulRansonArt Ай бұрын
@@tylersterling1786 the orange colour I mixed was Indian yellow and red. So experiment with what you have. I tend not to buy specific colours because it's easier to mix my own. You'll need some solvent to thin down the paint for those little branches, Bob would use a drop of thinners. Just be sure the paint is not too thin because the branches almost disappear. Hope this helps - paul

Hi Paul! I’m so glad that I was able to catch the video today.(a bit later) I truly enjoyed watching again as if we were in your studio. So cozy! And of course, I learned so many great tips. I have also made Christmas brown- but not.. I used cad red light too. I do not know what water mixable red is available- that would be a perfect match to BR bright red. I’m curious if you know any good water mixable oil brand that is good besides Windsor Newton Artisan. Very limited in colors. I love the effects that the Christmas brown makes on your painting. Thank you for showing the correct method of holding the fan and strokes needed to make beautiful waterfalls. I love Teri’s tip on how the water breaks up toward the base. The little bits added made such a difference! Thank you for another awesome video! 👏🤩🤗🖌️🎨

Hi Stephanie - phew just catching up with you. If you have alizarin crimson and sap green that makes Christmas brown too! But don't use Veridian Green which makes a black colour. Hookers Green just looks like a flat mud puddle. Experiment and see what works! I use Winsor and Newton but they have a big selection here in the UK. The other brand is Royal Talens - Cobra these are great too. And yes, those careful observations make all the difference. Happy Painting sweetie 😃😎

Hey Paul! Glad to see another one of these videos!! Thanks so much!! For the Christmas brown, is there a big difference between using alizarin crimson vs bright red? I don't have any sap green right now so can't try for myself but noticed in other videos usually its crimson and sap green (unless I'm imagining things). Also, would you ever consider painting a woodsy scene with some mushrooms? I really want to try painting some chicken of the woods mushrooms. Beautiful big yellow and orange cluster mushrooms that grow on old dead logs in the forest!! Seems like it could be a lot of fun. I have some pictures of some I took last fall, if you're ever interested in the idea and want some reference photos. 🙂 Thanks for another great video! Really enjoyed this one, as always. Have a great day, Paul!

Good afternoon Paul. Interesting video. I enjoyed watching it. I'm sorry I was a little late to see the start of the premiere. And sorry for writing this comment a day later. Some things took a little longer. Watching the video I heard it was a version of the Enchanted Falls painting without the oval frame. Sometimes things look a lot different before you realize that it's just our perception that's different. I enjoyed the video and saw some interesting effects that I would like to try in painting. I would like to tell you that while looking for this on the Internet, I accidentally came across a paint that is made from marble. At least that's what it's called. According to this, the shade of white is transparent. Perhaps it can serve as a substitute for zinc and lead white. I will send you a picture on Instagram. I'm still holding on to those messages I sent you. That the use of fillers could be a good substitute for lead white. But this could be another ace up his sleeve. Well, I won't prolong the message any longer. As always, I wish you a nice day, a peaceful week and happy painting.

Hi Paul great tutorials, quick question on liquid white, I got some came in a plastic tub and is very thin even when mixed well, when left for a long period it seperates with oil of some sorts on the top, also when I mix it and apply to canvas it dries out very quick, have you seen this before ? should I remove some of the oil to make it bit thicker ? thank you
@PaulRansonArt
@PaulRansonArt Ай бұрын
Hi Peter - the liquid white is supposed to be thin and oily so don't remove any oil at all. Over time it will stiffen a little so the oil needs to be stirred in well each time. If you take some oil out now it will be like concrete before you finish the pot! Now for the issue with the dry canvas. The number one reason why this happens is because of poor priming. Some 'double primed' canvases are so bad they act like a sponge and suck all the oil out of the liquid white leaving a dry almost powdery residue. Is that what you have? I bet it is. So, if its a new canvas ( especially if its a brand I've not used before ) I rub a small amount of the edge or back of the canvas. Leave it 30-40 minutes and test with your fingertip. If it's still nice and oily is primed ok. If not then go ahead and apply a good coat of gesso or acrylic to the painting surface. Then you should be go to go. Lastly, check out my playlists all about getting started with oils. I show you a few different ways to save ££ $$ by making paper 'canvases' to practice on. Hope this all helps - Paul 😃

Hey Paul , this is Liam from Birmingham uk, I have been painting for about 6 months now and don’t about 20 paintings already with some success (relatively for me) but today I have tried 3 times to start a painting (starting with one of your paintings (the one with the yellow ochre and black sky with a mountain) and for some reason after applying liquid white the colours are not blending, I had a new bottle of liquid white that was cracked , so I used an old bottle but the colours are not blending, and the paint quickly feels dry , I’ve tried applying more liquid white and less liquid white, and have ruined 3 canvases,I’m wondering if the problem could be the canvases, they are from Ashley houseware and apparently are primed , I only asked you because you are from the same part of the world as myself, have you got any ideas please Paul ? Thanks Liam
@PaulRansonArt
@PaulRansonArt Ай бұрын
Hi Liam - I've had more failed paintings than enough - almost always down to poorly primed canvases. The clue was that the canvas felt dry - maybe chalky? before you get anywhere. If it's a brand that's new to you ( even then I've still had a few duds) then I test the folded back edge of the canvas with a little liquid white. If it's still good after 30-40 mins I'm happy to carry on. But more often it's just a sticky chalky residue. All the oils dropped into the canvas. Now, you can wash them off with thinners then soap and water and leave them to dry before giving them a good coat or two of gesso / acrylic. Lastly - I use my paper DIY canvases made with lining paper. Check out my video on getting started with oils from the playlist. It will save you a ton of money and easy storage too! Hope this helps - Happy painting - Paul 😃😃

Hi, friend! From your comment, I'm guessing you are an intermediate or advanced painter. I'm just getting started, and I admit I'm a bit envious! It must be so amazing to not need commentary in painting videos!! For those of us newbies, we absolutely LOVE Paul's explanations. For that matter, we love his voice, his easy-going and relaxed manner while he teaches us. We love his sense of humor, his field trips, his way of making every painting look like something we can do, no matter our skill level... We love his expertise, his choices of painting demonstrations, his top tips... We love that he shows us how to correct mistakes as we paint, and the way he gently helps us let go of perfectionism so we can find the joy in painting. We even love his cat. 😅And the cool thing is that besides us newbies, even professional painters, like Yovette (who also does wonderful painting tutorials!) watch Paul's channel. To those of us who come back week after week to watch his videos, it definitely is to learn more about painting, but it's also because Paul feels like our artist friend; our mentor... Perhaps even our borrowed English Uncle. His style might not be for you, but if you stick around and watch each week like so many of us do, I'm guessing you'll discover what we have all discovered: Paul is a gem. And as an artist-teacher of 20 years, he has a lot of wisdom and insight to share for painters of every level. Thanks for checking out Paul's video! Have a fantastic week! And best wishes in your painting!
